A fireable Offense

Submitted by michgoblue on

First, let me preface this post - which might end up being pretty long - by noting that I have been a die hard fan of the team since my freshman year in 1994.  I haven't missed a single televised game since, regularly fly back from NY to attend games, donate $$ to the university, hold season tickets (that I donate to local AA charities for the majority of games that I cannot attend), and own / wear more Michigan-related items (clothing, office and home decor, etc.) than most professionals approaching 40.  MY fandome may not be equal to that of Wolverine Devotee, but it is pretty close.

For the first time, I am not sure that I am going to watch next week's Michigan game.  I have no interest, and quite frankly, I am not sure what to root for.  In my opinion, Hoke is gone, and he should be.  Not only are we not winning, but we look worse every single week.  Our 4-5* talent is not developing AT ALL, one glance at the sideline shows that the players have given up, there is tension between factions of players (even the commentators noticed that Devin and Shane barely acknowledged each other on the sidelines), and the team just looks like a total tire fire.  I keep waiting for this team to show some spark, some attitude, some moxie - hell, a good old fashioned fight (which I would never want to see) would at least show me that these kids give half a shit.  Instead, the team looks defeated, lost and confused.  Watching this game, it is pretty obvious that Hoke has lost the team.  Sure, the players might come out in his defense, and soe will lobby for him, but that just means that they like him as a person.  As a coach, he has lost the ability to rally this team to do much of anything.

All of this is bad enough - hell, even putting 10 men on the field on special teams to give up a return TD - but this week's conduct in my opinion is a FIREABLE OFFENSE.

IT was pretty obvious at halftime that Morris wasn't ready for primetime.  Now, why a sophmore (who arrived in the spring of his truefreshman year) isn't ready to step in against a crappy Minny team, is a whole different issue, but regardless, it was obvious that Morris couldn't do anything of use out there.  Thanks to our defense, the game was still pretty close.  Why the hell not go Gardner at this point to give us a chance to win.

Then, once it became obvious to everyone in attendance or watching on TV that Morris was limping, in severe pain, and unable to put pressure ON HIS PLANT FOOT (!!!), why the hell was he left in there?  EVen the announcers commented that it was unsafe as Morris was unable to protect himself.  Yet there is Hoke, stubbornly clapping and leaving Morris in to (a) lose the game, and (b) potentially get hurt.

Then, the hit.  Either Hoke was lying that he didn't know that MOrris was wobbly, or he is a complete moron who is unaware of anything going on.  I tend to think that it is the latter, but either way, this man does not have what it takes to lead this program.  Either way, he should be gone.

Now, if this week was an isolated incident, this would be merely a FIREABLE offense, but not necessarily one that would REQUIRE firing.  Perhaps a public apology and a suspension?  Some charitable work with the concussion center, whatever.  But, when coupled with his tenure, I do not see what Hoke has shown that, when weighed against this incident, would lead anyone to retain him past tomorrow.  Specificially:

1.  2013 - all of it

2.  2014 ND

3.  2014 Utah

4.  His record against MSU / Ohio State

5.  His road record

6.  Leaving Bellamy in against Nebraska in 2012 when we had a real shot at a Big Championship title, when it was obvious that he was getting murdered and was completely unprepared

7.  total lack of player development (including a number of 5* can't miss types)

8.  The handling of the Lewan / Gibbons incident

9.  playing 10 guys on special teams

10.  His post game presser last night (I could not care less about any of his prior pressers - this one was over the top)

Now if this were not enough, the media has taken hold of the story.  Hoke is publicly done and will be unable recruit a 3* to come to Michigan going forward.  He is, for all intents, dead coach walking.

So, in light of the above, I think that the only logical move that the school can do to save face is to remove Hoke effective immediately.  Yes, interim coaches rarely work out.  But, the one benefit of firing hoke now is that the media gives the team a pass for this season - the understanding is that this is all temporary and that next year there will be a new staff brought in to clean house.  It also allows the university to form a search committee early and publicly search for the best candidate out there.  Remember that OSU went an entire season with Luke Fickell as interim coach and their coaching search turned out pretty ok.

Buncha dudes talking, dudes shut up. One dude said shit, another retorts. Then two guys started talking at the same time, and stopped at the same time. They laughed, and then the team laughed then Hoke came in and started slow clapping cuz he's "The Clapper". Then I hear Nuss suggested we should just win all of the games, to which Hoke said "what games?"

The handling of the Morris situation was not acceptable and probably the final straw.

Even if the Morris incident didn't happen, the loss to Minnesota probably put the final nail in his coffin.  Hoke being the only coach in Michigan football history to have 3 losses before October in his 4th year is likely all we need to see.  The horrible performance against Minnesota seems totally lost in the debate about Morris and probably rightfully so.

While it is repetitive, I feel your pain.

You still have the season ticket is amazing.

I say send it to Hoke and tell him to show up at the game.

I wish every season ticket holder has an opportunity to send a vote (or comment) in during the regents meeting, regarding athletics...

on the team buffet line.

I mean this not to put anything on the players only to state that we will never know.  And if we did that would be possibly a worse failure as then the locker room is being opened to the media for a reporting circus to shortly ensue.

You hear that college football is a brand. Hoke's actions yesterday did not only look bad for Michigan, but also for college football. Spence from OSU gets suspended for failing a second drug test. He done this on his own free will. He is suspended. Hoke will not receive any discipline for putting kids safety at risk. Brandon needs to man up and discipline Hoke If not, let the NCAA and Big Ten suspend Hoke for the season and place pressure on Michigan to fire Dumb and Dumber.

1.  Hoke is the #8 highest paid coach in CFB at $4.159M this year, behind only Urban Meier in tbe B1G (source USA Today)

2.  Our two coordinators are both in the top 10 in the US in pay at over $700k each per year. (source USA Today)

3. Michigan has the highest average student ticket prices in the country and among the top face value tickets in the U.S.  (Source: Michigan Daily).

I am a season ticket holder who spends $4,500 for the priviledge to buy $75 face value tickets.  For this massive investment we have an embarassing program.  I would be disappointed in Hoke if we paid him $1M.  But to think we are paying this man $4M for his lack of results is insulting and infuriating.

Ifr he had the charaxter and love of Michigan he claims he should agree to voluntarily decline his salary until the results improve.... if he gets to keep his job.

The fact that we reached a new low today by making the ABC News national broadcast for the Morris incident is the final straw for me.

The worst part is Hoke and company are perhaps laughing all th way to bank.  Pathetic and disappointing.

I find some of this argument ridiculous. I will premise this by saying I have not yet had the opportunity to watch the whole game. I had a Game myself last night and I am just beginning to watch the game as I speak. I have had an opportunity to see what happened to Shane from what was posted on this site. It was obvious to me, the fan, that Morris was shaken and in trouble. I agree that he should have been pulled. I understand that Brady ultimately must take the fall for this... But who is to blame?

To me this is a similar situation to what happened with Gardner 75% or the 2013 season. Yes, many will argue that the injuries did not occur to Devin's head, but as a QB you are going to take hits. If the QB does not go down its always tough to make that call in real time. Like I said I still have to watch everything in real time to understand the entire scenario but I also know how difficult it is to pull a kid when your in the middle of a game. Sure, people will say I am being entirely insensitive but there are so many other factors that come into play in the minute they seemingly had to make this decision. Just from watching the clip it also seemed a bit harsh of the announcer to pass judgement on the staff so quickly. Easy to make a call when your watching from a HD screen up top somewhere. Once again, I still need to watch in real time.

Like many of you have said, I feel the loss alone is plenty enough to seal Hoke's fate. As far as the treatment of Shane being a fireable offense; I find that absolutely ridiculous. The game seemed well in hand for Minnesota at that point and it doesn't seem as though Hoke kept Shane in because he had dreams of a comeback. If this incident shows me anything it is that Hoke really has no role on our staff during the game. He calls timeouts. That is not his substitution to make, that's likely Nuss's. However, there comes a point were the HC should step in and take the kid out. It's obvious Hoke doesn't even know enough about what's going on to do that. To me the negligence of authority is the fireable offense, not the mistreatment of players. Really doubt it was intentional on Hoke's part. He had nothing to gain either way. Just proves he is not ready for this spot imo.

After watching a little more of the film to me a better question is how was the player who committed the penalty not ejected? How is that crew of officials not reprimanded. In today's game this is one of the most blatant and obvious examples of targeting. Should have clearly been an ejection. Obviously Shane's health is more important than an ejection, but why is no one saying anything about the officials.

Shane braces himself on Braden making it tough to tell if he is ok or not. He repeatedly signals that he is fine. I understand that the kid is in the game and undoubtably will do everything to stay in but when you hold yourself up against someone else it makes it difficult to tell the true state of your health. Seeing the situation it's clear hoke should trump Morris and pull him. I honestly don't know why Morris was even in to begin with. I have said all year he wasn't ready. I personally believe he will never be ready, but that's just my opinion and has no barring on the events. Bad situation that just proves Hoke should be out. The whole staff has underachieved. Very disappointing.

I do not want to sound overly insensitive, but frankly I seen this coming four years ago. Morris was, as I've stated many times before, not very impressive to me in HS. He played his home games at the HS I had been coaching at. I seen him from his senior year on. He was notoriously inaccurate. Every time the issue was brought up someone would preface the conversation with "well, he has no receivers". This was true until his senior year but that didn't change anything. He played on a below average parochial school. He missed 3/4s of his senior year to 'mono' but looked terrible long before he contracted it.

Whether it was Hoke, Al, or the simple fact that Michigan had to take a big local name to boost local recruiting prowess against Ohio and state, Shane was never the right choice. Hindsight is 20/20, but I for one never endorsed the decision. On top of all that he was a lefty. As a former reciever that is never fun.

Heard about the fiasco because I was at work. Watched the game later and was so disappointed how the team played overall. No enthusiasm, looking as if they were looking for the train to steamroll them. All facets of the game were awful.

I watched the Morris debacle a couple of times and these thoughts crossed my mind:

1. There appeared to be no concussion protocol performed by the athletic trainer, I didn't see a physician looking after Shane when he came out.

2. Morris should've been pulled at halftime. He isn't ready for prime time and may never be. Speight or Malzone will be the future QB.

3. Hoke's answer "I didn't see it" doesn't make sense. Is he watching the game that we were? Nuss saw what was going on and didn't try hard enough to get him out of the game. It sounds like after the game he and Hoke exchanged words over this.

4. When the referee is practically begging Hoke to take a timeout and Hoke shrugs it off, it shows how little he sees the disaster unfolding around him.

5. Bellamy not having his helmet ready was laughable but shows the lack of attention to detail this program has.

6. Morris should've never had his helmet anywhere near him after he came out and this goes directly back to my first point, no concussion protocol was performed.

I want to see Hoke and Brandon both let go but DB brings cash to the school and finding an AD takes more time. Our recruits need to see the school isn't going to settle for this and are making a preemptive strike. Hopefully we don't lose many but I fear we will. I'm sure Hoke told the Morris family he would protect their kid as if he was his own. The deference to obvious injury was a slap in the face to Shane's family. Other parents saw this.

Flip flop all position coaches, Hoke relieves himself as DL coach, taking away all of J Ryan's playmaking ability by moving him to Mike, no captains until the end of the year, keeping Shane out there yesterday..... I smell desperation.
