Emotionally Unprepared

Submitted by BroadShouldersBlue on

I was prepared for my dog to die. I’m prepared for my grandparents to die. I wasn’t prepared for this, and I think that’s why I’m sitting here, in my beautiful condo, with my wonderful wife and dog, and I can’t talk. I’m a shell. I think we all know that no team can win every game. But man, not one part of my brain even considered the possibility of this eventual outcome, and I think that’s what hurts and confuses me the most. How did this happen?

Well obviously it’s not entirely Blake’s fault. The offense couldn’t really get going, and the defense allowed too many big plays to Connor Cook and Co. That being said, I’m damn proud of this team, and am encouraged for our bright future. At times like these it’s hard to see the forest for the trees, but we have to try.

This site, you people, you’re the best. We have each other. Let’s move on with humble hearts, and focus on the rest of our B1G schedule.

Sincerely yours in football,

The Big Ten race is still wide open.   MSU will get crushed by OSU.  If they lose another along the way, we're in business.  The team could very well beat Ohio State.

The B1G requires We beat OSU and MSU and OSU lose one other for it to happen.  At this point I just want to crawl in a hole and die.

This games feels like a thousand paper cuts.

No offense.  Did we even get 50 yards in the second half?
Big plays let by the defense.

Officiating from Hell
Muffed/low snap to give the game away.

You literally can't point to one thing as the cause, but in the end they were all a cause.  MSU still isn't a compelling team.  They failed as much as we did, just got luckier when it counted.  A loss like that just can't be prepared for.

The Spartans have a good team. Maybe not as good as they had a year ago but still a good team. The final score is the final score, and if one has to look at what ifs, the first half is really the chance to pad the lead - the final UM drive before the half wasn't treated as if they were in 4 down mode and ended as a punt from midfield.

Nearly everyone thought this team was 7-5 or 8-4 at the start and it was the good recovery from the opening loss that got the old hype machine going that this was a team of destiny. Let's be positive and see how it turns out - it may still be a 10-2 or 9-3 team at the end.

Maybe losing in that fashion, like auburn beating bama on that FG return, can't be " prepared for" but this team losing to msu in general should be no shock. M is not yet an elite program (though I'm hopeful they can be in future due to trust in harbaughs ability and commitment and his track record). Some recognized all the playoff and natl title talk as premature and unlikely in yr 1 given QB and O so some tried to temper expectations. But many went wild with it. They lost in brutal fashion to a hated rival and it sucks. But msu is a good experienced team with pros at QB, DE, etc and they outplayed M for much of the game. M had chances but issues at QB and on O (and pretty much all around) prevented them from stepping on msu throat - and unfortunately it came back to bite them (in crazy fashion). Be shocked at the manner in which they lost but not at the loss in general. Bc M has not yet arrived. Not yet complete enough. Not yet elite

This hurts worse than Kordell did. We can have hope Michigan brothers and sisters, we will never feel pain worse than this. And after so many years I am temporarily emotionally devastated by a Michigan football loss, some thing that Rich Hoke spent seven years conditioning me for. Time to drink away maize and blue tears.

Way way worse than the Colorado loss.  Less embarrassing than the App State loss, but way way more painful.

I like our team though.  Just the toughest loss ever for me.  Easily.

I have to do the same shit on Monday. Go to work, deal with the trolling, and just laugh it off so they'll stop laughing at me. I really do feel for O'Neill. He won't even be able to walk around campus without fearing for his own safety. Which sucks. I hope he's doing alright.

I can stand losing. Hell, I'm used to it after the RichRod and Hoke eras. But to lose in this fashion - to those green bastards - I just can't handle it. I probably won't sleep for weeks.

My wife was excited that M was going to win. I told her that a lot has to go right to get off a punt. For once, I was right.

And it was devastating

There's no need to fake it here. We don't have to look at the offense, we don't have to look at the refs, we don't have to look at this or that playcall.

It's a close game, it was always gonna be a close game. Our players, our coaches did everything to put themselves into position to have the lead with a handful of seconds left and the opponent having to drive 50+ yards with no timeouts and that handful of seconds left.

We lost because our punter, Blake O'Neill, made a terrible mistake, the worst you can make in his profession, at the worst possible time and in his panic rather than minimizing his mistake, aggravated it and this led to the defeat.

We lost because Blake O'Neill messed up. Everything else is dishonest. The kid knows it, his teammates know it, the coaches know it.

It is virtually impossible for him to make up for this mistake but he will almost certainly be given the chance to do so. His job is unfortunately the type of job where your mistakes will be seen far more clearly than your achievements and so it is very likely that his name will live in infamy.

Fuck you! Blake is an amateur athlete in a sport where many others make millions thanks to the efforts of him and others. He is a punter and would fade into oblivion if not for today, but now for the rest of your life he'll face the "hey aren't you...?" from others every time he introduces himself. The team lost

Broken Heart for the team and the coach and the fans. I didn't see that outcome and honestly can't even look at the game as being won. Hard to say another team won a game on an error that a great kicker never makes. More like just damn.

Glad the Team has a bye week. They will be back at it in a couple of weeks. Great job for the team.

Michigan fielded a winning team today and done a hell of a job. I cannot say that for the refs. I think they should all be fired or trained. Taking one of our lead tacklers out of such an important game on one of the worst calls I have ever seen??

We are not done. Lot of games left and we can still kick Ohio's ass. How will that work when state loses to Ohio and we beat Ohio? Does anybody know? Doesn't matter I am rooting for any team that plays Sparty for the rest of my life. Nobody deserves that much luck.

Sulking in Michigan

But I wanted to try a roll out for Rudock on that last play. No way in hell MSU would have expected it and Rudock would most likely have a wide open running lane to the outside or a wide open receiver two yards down the field. And if nothing is there, simply fall down. There was no way we were getting those three yards with MSU stacking the box.

Was thinking the same thing on that 3rd down.  A roll with a run/pass option still would have been safe call.

Now to be fair, 10 seconds and punting should still be a win, no way anybody could have foreseen the borderline impossible happening

I thought exactly the same thing, run it with Rudock.

Then I thought "Nah, give it to Smith, that's his job and he's less likely to fumble."

Maybe call TO and get Peppers on the field again? Anything to make them have to take other possibilities into account.

Not surprised it happened. The longer the let them hang around I knew it would end badly. Needed one first down. Just another failure.
