Go Flyers! I think I'd rather play Zona than Wisco if we beat Kentucky (something about Big Ten teams scares me), but I don't know for sure.
Elite 8 day 1 open thread
I think Florida will win by double digits and Arizona will beat Wisconsin in a thriller.
...there will be nothing left of the area they call "The Ghetto." Nothing at all. It'll be all just fire and brimstone. Oh, and a lot of beer cans.
Beast Light cans, to be specific.
Must be great for Florida to have 4 senior starters
As much as I'd love to see a Dayton upset I'd rather Florida get the chance to take out MSU.
I think Wisconsin Arizona game is a near coin flip. We are much better off than when we first played AZ so I wouldn't mind a rematch and I think we match up better with them than Wisconsin.
can beat MSU.
what we did to Florida in the Regional Final last year?
but I recently blew out my speakers listening to that goddamn "badger badger badger" song, and I angrily forsook all badgers from that point on. So now I'm kinda, well, stuck.
I'm rooting for Dayton, but just can't see how it happens. As far was my rooting for Wiscy- it just kind of came out. First thought as to who I think will win. And I can root for any B1G outside of OSU and MSU
Watched a lot of Devin Oliver while he was in high school and I always enjoyed his game. Love the success he and this squad is having.
I think come crunch time FL will come out on top.
Oh man do I want to play Florida. We would decimate that transition defense
If I recall correctly Casey Prather was 99% committed to Beilein.
But wasn't THJ the guy we ended with instead? That worked out.
Early returns have Dayton with an eFG% of 37.50% and Florida sitting comfortably at an eFG% of 53.57%. Ten minutes in or so, Florida finally got its first two offensive rebounds, so there are various explanations to the most recent scoring drought floating around here. Dayton is sending Florida to the line with a 25ish% FTR, so that might become an issue too.
It's not really my style to root for any team within Ohio, but I hate UF thoroughly.
Go Florida and go Arizona.
I'd like MSU to have to go through Florida than Dayton (should they beat UConn) and I feel a lot better about playing Arizona than Wisconsin for some reason. Maybe because we nearly beat Arizona before we were good and Wisconsin beat us by 13 at home last time we played.
Florida is getting away with another foul. The more I watch the game the more I think that it's just a terrifyingly arbitrary business what gets called and what doesn't.
I think Florida wins this, although it'd be awesome if Dayton pulled off the upset. Florida winning would be good though because they can definitely beat MSU, which I think has a REALLY good shot at the Final Four. Arizona-Wisconsin, I think Wisconsin pulls it out late.
i think their team is exciting. also, love cinderella's--especially those that beat ohio state--but would prefer to see the best teams make the final four...
Why is everyone so scared of the possibility of us and Wiscy squaring off? I don't see why Zona would be a better game for us at all
Beat Kentucky first.
Of course. I'm just saying I don't see all of the worry. Kentucky is more worrisome than either of these two
Florida up by 14. Will we see the refs get Dayton back into the game?
Nah, I think Florida runs away with this. This game has been their big hurdle - they've lost in the Elight Eight three straight years - and now, after maybe a few early jitters, they're pouring it on.
they really get after it.
Florida looks really good, they seem so balanced on both ends.
How does a team that is as consistently good as Florida get 4 starters to stay until their senior year?
None of the 4 look like NBA players. Maybe Young, but he projects as maybe a 2nd round pick. Needless to say Donovan will have to rebuild next year.... if he stays around. Wouldn't be surprised to see him finally make the jump to the NBA.
Billy Donovan just signed a nice contract extension through 2018 I believe so I don't see him making that jump quite yet
What Florida has are players who are not good enough individually to leave school early for the NBA, but are good enough to come together to be a talented team.
Just like MSU.
And they had three senior starters last year. Donovan has had pretty good fortune in this area.
They seem like a great matchup for us - if we can get that far. Their defense is still lacking in transition and especially at the 3 point line - much like a year ago when Stauskas went off on them.
Just a few observations from yesterday:
-Michigan regularly lets teams climb back in games because they get overconfident with big leads. When the team goes on a run, they get too caught up and start feeling so good about themselves that they either force things or settle for shots they can get at anytime. The opposite is what is needed. With a nice lead, the team should actually slow down and work for a great shot and kill off time in the process. Yesterday Walton and Levert needed to show more composure.
-In regards to the inbounding issues, Stauskas should be inbounding. I know Nik is the best FT shooter but because of his lack of elite athleticism he rarely is able to get free for the inbound pass anyway. Stauskas is 6'6 and easily the teams best passer.
-Morgan is a great defensive player and strong as an ox. It is so impressive to me that no one can really move him.
-Hopefully Caris skips the crisco hand lotion for Kentucky.
I heard he was in the parking lot changing the oil on all of the buses.
You're sickening. Go drop thirty one dollars on lotto tickets.
it's weird that Patric Young still plays. I feel like he's been there forever, I remember all the hype he got as a freshman, I'm surprised he never left.
The boards. Plain and simple. Florida absolutely dominated the glass. They didn't shoot particularly well tonight, at all.
Alright...this next game should be a really, really good one...
The enemy of my enemy is the closest thing we have to a friend right now. My hate level for the Buzzcuts is near MSU/OSU level. Sorry, conference loyalty. For the sake of the aesthetics of the game of basketball, I'm going for Arizona in this one and then for UConn tomorrow in a laugher.
We made the Spectacular(?) Seven.
we will be in the Super Six,
We are guaranteed to be in the final 5.
Dare I say...Fab Five?
Am I allowed to say that on here?
Did anyone else think Dayton just blew the last 2 minutes? Terrible shooting and way too much passing wasting time.
As long as you don't mention Jalen Rose, it's ok. /s
Why is Charles Barkley happy at the end of that ad where the vendor only really wants Greg Anthony's autograph? He should be grumbling out the "What's in your wallet?" question, not grinning ear to ear.
I'd rather play Arizona. We played better against them than we did against Wisconsin.
We actually beat Wiscy this year tho.
I would not object to a Final Four having 3 Big Ten teams.
lol Bo Ryan
Helmer with a hat-trick over in the Wings game! An absolute must-win tonight.
I'm cool with 3 Big Ten teams in the Final Four, but if Michigan was to lose tomorrow, I rather not any Big Ten teams make. All for selfish reasons I guess.
Good chess match going on so far. Pretty damn good defense by both teams as tough shots are being forced on both ends; both are also hitting a few of said shots, helping to put some actual points on the board. Nigel Hayes has been huge for Wiscy, getting a couple tough baskets to fall to keep Wiscy within striking range. Nick Johnson has done the same for Arizona. Kaminski and Tarczewski are both playing damn well, also.
Weird to think that there's a good chance we could have not one but two rematches in the Final Four/ championship game, if we advance that far. Even Florida would be a rematch from last season. Only UConn would be truly "new".
Eh you're stretching it if you're including a game from last season. But really can you imagine playing Wisconsin and MSU back to back? That would be nuts.
Arizona, too. We're guaranteed a rematch game if we win tomorrow. On the flipside, the possibility exists for a Wildcat/Wildcat matchup, as well.
We need to drive more tomorrow. We've gotten away from it lately.
How the fug is that a block on Kaminski?!!
I officially have no clue what a charge or a block is.
Neither do the refs.
Ball don't lie
Hope Wisky picks up their shooting percentage.
Turrible possession out of the timeout. Also, Bo Ryan scares me.
Wisconsin should be feeling pretty decent about that first half, all things considered. A three-point game now, and Brust hasn't decided to show up yet. Provided he does, in fact, turn up in the second half...I gotta say Wisconsin is in the Final Four.
Good half of basketball I thought. A little low scoring, sure so I'm sure that turns some people off but the defensive aspect of the game can be entertaining and I feel this one so far has been (no, I'm not a Bo Ryan style of play-lover, not even close!).
It'll be interesting to see what tweaks/changes are made for the 2nd half. Maybe none? I think these teams match up pretty well even though their styles aren't exactly similar so it may just be a slug fest, so to speak; who can hit the most shots (no shit sherlock...but I don't think there's a talent discrepancy so it comes down to true fundamental basketball, not always seen these days).
If I'm a Wildcat fan, I'm very nervous. Wisconsin didn't play well in that first half but is still only down by three. Also, Wisconsin got jobbed by the refs.
Not only does Charles Barkley have a good sense of humor but he just calls it like he sees it. He called the block on Kaminski "bogus".
Right. Honestly, one could argue he may not be the brightest or whatever, yadda yadda. He does say and have some iffy opinions on things, but it at least he's/it's real and like you say, he calls it how he sees it. He isn't a pawn of the executives of these huge media enterprises. I hope not anyway.
I love Barkley. I like the whole TNT crew honestly (Ernie, and Kenny too). I also like a lot of the announcers they've been using for the tournament. Reggie and Greg Anthony come to mind.
Barkley's coaching advise during halftime
1. get it to Kaminsky
2. get it to Kaminsky
3. get it to Kaminsky
Good advise so far.
Wisconsin beard guy going crazy
I hate the "Hey look, your kitchen's on fire" guy.
How can you hate the mayhem guy? I think all of those commercials are hilarious! I love the one where he's a hot tailgate grill left in the back of an SUV. "I see you bought the industrial sized bottle of lighter fluid. Smart."
He's just annoying. He reminds me of Christian Laettner.
I fucking hate Bo Ryan's constant scowl when his boys commit a foul.
Can't believe Hayes hasn't been called for an offensive foul. Blatant hook literally every post move I've seen him make.
Is it me, or does he look like he belongs in the SEC?
Did they blow that call. Wasn't even close.
My 14 year old cousin just asked me where Wisconsin is. Our education system is in the shitter.
are different phenomena. I think Wisconsin's going to win.
Does your cousin not live in a home with internet access - or a map of the U.S. ?
I neglected to mention she lives in ohio.
My kids public school education is devoid of fundamental geographical knowledge. I live in Maryland. Up to me to teach em!
Honestly, is it that hard? I don't remember spending much time in school actually being taught geography, but we had maps in the classroom, and I had a map at home. That was pretty much all I needed to figure out which state was where.
This officiating is just absolutely brutal. Did them import these guys from the title game last year? I think they just called Wisconsin for a kick ball after ARIZONA kicked it.
Do they have some sort of contest where they find the worst refs in the US and then put them in the most important tournament games or something?
Kaminsky is a monster. Is he really not an NBA prospect?
Either team is going to be a hard out.
Why is Kaminsky never talked about as an early entree. Just as dangerous as Payne and younger. Looks like a young Bill Laimbeer out there. 6'11 with a 3 pt shot and big banger inside?
Is he projected to be a first round pick? The only player I ever hear about that could leave is Dekker.
In a normal draft year maybe he would be, but this drafted is absolutely loaded.
Wisky's gonna lose b/c none of their guards can ever recognoze when kaminsky has a shorter dude on him. Unbelieveable how many possessions can go by without him touching it.
So should be Wisconsin ball then if replay logic from the Michigan-Tennessee ref crew is used here.
Will bo finally get to the final four?
that was lucky... airball - ally-oop
Just don't feel like the confidence and decisiveness is there for Wisconsin
I don't know how you don't go to Kaminsky there.
Why did they not pass the ball to Kamisky, who had a guard on him?
Bo should have called TO with 15 secs. Terrible last shot selection.
in the last possession.
If that's what they came up with in the time out it's terrible.
Which of these teams is the better match up for us? I think I'd rather play Arizona, since Kamisky is scary right now
If we win tomorrow, that is
Agreed. Kaminsky and Payne both pose the same issue right now. Morgan is a good defender but I prefer him guarding someone who plays mostly within 15 feet of the basket.
How the hell is that the last play for Wisky? It's like they didn't want to win. Kaminsky isolated on a guard and not even a pass to him.
this game has been weirdly free of momentum or runs either way. no telling which way it could go.
Hard to believe Gordon has his worst game of the year and yet Arizona has made to OT.
Still no buzzer beaters.
Remember Barkley's advise
Kaminsky, Kaminsky, Kaminsky
Is that the Canadian spelling of "advice"?
I don't know who to root for. I think we match up better with Arizona but I want Wisky to win.
Kaminsky looks worn out. Way more than the UA guys. Maybe he'll perk up after this TO
Marv's face has been pulled really tight
Correction. When we win tomorrow.
Filthy shot by Kaminsky
WTF with these refs? That called foul was late as hell.
That should be a flagrant on Gasser. Can't be swinging your elbow like that. That was not inadvertent.
refs fault for not calling a foul when they should have. You can't let 'em mug a guy like that.
If they had called the 15 fouls beforehand there would have been no elbow swinging..Gasser had two guys hanging all over him.
Huh? He can. A player is entitled to an invisible bubble around them. Don't get in the way of elbows, you won't get hit.
That's not how the rule reads. you can't swing your elbows no matter where the other player is.
Really have to review this shit right now? Good grief.
When their player is getting mugged underneath
He threw a bunch of elbows and the foul is on Johnson? Uhh
Really? You don't see the 15 fouls on the two players hanging all over him? Time to take the anti-wisco glasses off I think
not to mention johnson was down low sticking his mug in there. it wasn't like gosser raised his elbows and swung them around.
One angle looked like he missed with the elbow. Acting?
it looked like a grazing to me, not an impactful blow at all
Just logged in to post this. That was very good acting. He didn't hit him at all.
Wisky has been missing off the glass all night.
Huh. Arizona didn't foul Wisconsin there.
Arizona, 65.5% FT on the season? Amazing they could be a 1 seed despite that.
Jackson is a hog ball of epic proportion.
wow charge at the end of the game - WHO CALLS THAT? ITS FIXED - RCMB
Controversial call ..........again.
Wisconsin got a break.
That was so freaking stupid
Good call. I'm surprised they called it, though.
Wow. Ballsy call.
OMG THIS CALL IS TURBLE
-CBS after the game
Or is that only when it helps Michigan?
Inbound the damn ball wisky
Worst fucking call i have seen in a big game.
It was a correct call. He definitely cleared space with his left arm. It doesn't get called much, but it was correct.
Defense initiated contact. Defensive foul or nothing. If defense didn't initiate, then you're right.
But after all the no calls on wisconsins hooking fouls down low, it's inconsistent at the very least.
nvm. That looks like a push off.
That was fucking terrible
Wow feels like a repeat of TN
Sean Miller did the right thing not calling timeout. *Doesn't have any left*
Can't make that call. Been letting them play all game and you make that call. Terrible. 3 games this weekend that have been poorly officiated at the death.
Back to the monitor. Holy hell this game's definitely an interesting one these days
Here goes this monitor review. ..
There was either a bump or you let it go.
I don't think either of these teams beats Florida. Just not enough on offense for either.
The winner of this game plays the winner of UM/UK. They wouldn't play Florida until the championship
THey don't play Florida. They play UM/UK winner
Well they would have to get past michigan/uk first...
Give it to AZ to make up for the foul call
Correct me if i'm wrong, but the officials didn't have the balls to call the push off at the end of our game with Arizona early in the year right?
I can see where that call is justified. You can't push off like that as an offensive player
just like we were last night.
Did the ball land on the Arizona player's head out of bounds.
Does Wisconsin have both of the late calls go their way? Awfully lucky for them if they do.
Looks off UA to me or indeterminable, but who the hell knows with these officials.
Here we go again. Looked like wisky ball to me.
If we go by ass-backward refs-from-yesterday logic it's CLEARLY Zona ball.
Wisconsin foul but good when Johnson (then) pushes off? The college game is suffering from diminished credibility.
Arm is under the AZ player's. Looks like it should be AZ ball.
Do they have no other angle?
Should be Arizona ball. Wiscy can't possibly get both 50-50 calls.
Now unlike yesterday this 50/50 ball is really a guess.
It is a guess, but Wisconsin got the last call so it really should go to Arizona.
It actually looks like the left hand of the wiscy player hit the ball last
This is bs.
Five fcuking minutes
I know what will fix this. A color-changing ball that glows the color of the team that last touched it.
Coming to your court in 2035.
That's as much Arizona ball today as it was Michigan's yesterday. So clearly it's gonna stay with Wisconsin.
I don't agree with that. It looks like it's off UW, but the angle wasn't quite as good...and they give it to UA, which is OK.
Zona catching one hell of a break
Wow. Doesn't seem right to me.
Zona ball. Here we go...
AZ HAS NO TIMEOUTS
So they can reverse that but they couldn't reverse the one in our game?
Arizona should not have received possession.
The vampire is happy....
Nice job Zona.
Stupid waste of clock
Wow Sean Miller. Had 10 minutes to draw something up and that's what you came up with?
OMG What was he thinking? He didn't even get off a shot?
That was Elijah Johnson-esque.
Holy shit that in bounds play was awful. No awareness whatsoever
Go Big Ten !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All that and they can't even get a shot off.
Beat UK and we play Wisco..not sure I like it but that's the game.
Facing Arizona again didn't look very appealing either, that 2nd half they dominated inside.
Well not as much as Kaminsky dominated..and we know he has our number already.
Johnson must have thought it was 5 seconds left. Get the damn shot off my man.
Good for Wisconsin. Let's make it 3 B1G teams.
2 big ten teams. And I think Uconn rides the home crowd and Napier and takes out Sparty.
That would be perfect. Two of four teams in it is still awesome, and Sparty watching us would be delicious.
Praying to god this happens. Living in Lansing, I couldn't stomach the extra State love-in.
Eh, I guess. There's only one game I care about tomorrow though.
Well at least we don't have to hear any, "UofA" chants next weekend.
Get the shot off
Welp... Let's help set up the B1G dominated Final Four. BEAT KENTUCKY
Lost lots of Bo Ryan points tonight. He never really looked crazy.
The early tech meant that one more and he was gone.
He got the early T and then he was on his best behavior.
2 seconds is plenty of time to get a shot off; not smart
Wisconsin's lack of offense outside of Kaminsky will do them in against Kentucky/Michigan.
Nonsense - we beat them when they had their 1 slump and they came into AA and beat us. They are a very tough team. Kaminsky is playing at an elite level. Danny Manning single handidly took Kansas through a tourney - Kemba Walker did the same with UConn, Glen Rice was a monster for UM in 89 - one player on fire can take you a long way. Decker Jackson et al will score.
Wow. Gotta know how long it takes to take three dribbles.
What's the National Narrative going to be when Michigan and Sparty both win tomorrow?
"Down Year in Every Other Conference: B1G Teams Advance"
Of allll the obvious calls that haven't been over turned, and they over turn that fucking thing ???
Who does Wisconsin play next, Florida?
You serious, Clark?
It's either us or Kentucky.
Oh well, it didn't matter in the end.
It almost did, though.
Morgan will have his hands full against Kaminski but he can do it! He'll move himself up in the draft too!
GO BLUE. Beat KY the Wiscy!
And I think Horford could finally come up with some HUGE minutes for us as well. Remember, we'll have a week to prepare.
But F-that, BEAT UK!
decision to change the call. I wish calls were made more often based on what likely happened (ignoring the call on the court that was based on nothing), rather than relying on oft-impossible indisputable evidence.
You can't predict or guess...either you see it or you don't.
It's sports, refs make the wrong call, it's part of every game. You can't go back and say "well I may have been wrong." Either you overturn it on the replay because you see evidence or you go with your original call...right or wrong.
equals evidence based on what the replay shows. It is evidence-based with room for intuition. Makes way more sense than ignoring compelling evidence but failing to pull the trigger bc it isn't 100% obvious.
Jesus 10 minutes during the review and that's the play????
And then I want to beat the shit out of Wisky and then MSU.
Hold your horses. If UM wins I want 3 Big 10 teams, if UM loses I want it only be Wiscy.
Frankly I just want UM and Wiscy at this point. I have no hate for UConn.
I said I want all 3 B1G teams, that implies that UM wins and beats UK.
Then obviously I want to beat Wisky and MSU. I didn't say or imply anything about rooting for the B1G in the Final Four without Michigan being part of it. I now want all of the teams to make it, and then I want Michigan to destroy Wisky and play MSU in the finals and destroy them. Nothing wrong with that. No horses need to be held.
Hold your horses. I wont be rooting for MSU in any sporting event. One less final 4 for MSU is fine by me, and I encourage it.
Congrats to Wiscy and go B10.
What a game. SB Nation is going to have fun with that inbounds review call. I honestly did not see the "change in rotation" the commentators opined but that's the way it went at the end. I really wanted to pay back Zona for the game way back when but I'm OK with them losing.
that the left hand came in after the initial deflection and changed the trajectory of the ball.
And then changed and was going right...
So it did change, the problem is. Jackson probably hit it, but the Arizona player was actually the one going "right" and with the new tragectory of the ball.
How will we ever match up with Wisconsin's bigs?!
And so it begins....
I still think there is a chance that ball hit the Arizona player's head before it hit the ground out of bounds. Inbounds to Wisky.
Let's make it 2 big ten teams. Rooting for other big ten teams seems SEC esque. I don't care who we play as long as we win the NCAA title.
I like our chances against Wisconsin. Beat Kentucky.
I didn't think Arizona would win the whole thing. They just lack the firepower without Ashley but I did not expect them to lose to Wiscy. They just seemed like the kind of team Zona could beat by bogging them down and just wearing them down. Credit to Wiscy for basically doing that to Zona.
Also, f**k Sean Miller. An unlikeable douche. Brian Kelly levels of asshat.
Big Ten Final Four, step 1/3.
I wonder if the NCAA can afford to give away those nets.
I think in general Wisconsin was getting boned, but I disagree with that offensive foul call. NOT that it wasn't a push off, but the Gossard initiated contact. I think that has to be either a defensive foul or a no-call. The offensive player pushed-off in response to the defensive player initiating contact. How can that be an offensive foul?
Hard to say Arizona got screwed given all the other BS calls they got, but on that single call I think they got the wrong end of it.
but definitely on par with some of the calls made this year. It was definitely a push off though. Tough play to officiate, not really any good option. Some plays are like that. It's a shame
no matter how much it sucks. You say the O player pushed off in response to the D player initiating contact. Obviously, no call was made when he initiated contact, so correct thing to do is play through and not automatically assume official is going to give leniency in two directions. If, as you said, the D player fouled then it's obvious the official was saying, you had better be better than me. Hate it when officials take the last 50 seconds off like the announcers are right when they say, "You have to let them play." Some play a lot dirtier than others. How the fuck is that right?
If you see the play you'll realize that the push off occurred so quickly after the initial contact that it was almost simultaneous. The Arizona player saw Gossard bum-rushing him and got his arm in position to fend him off because he realized that Gossard's "defense" was going to consist of just crashing into him at full speed. Since he realized correctly that the pussy-assed official wasn't going to call a foul at the end of the game he understood that he WAS going to have to play through the foul, which he did by pushing Goassard (who DID commit a foul) away from him.
I still say that has to be either a defensive foul or a no-call there. You can't just let the defensive player crash into the offensive player like that. Gossard was NOT just in defensive position. He was clearly moving INTO the offensive player at a pretty high rate of speed.
OMG if we beat a 8 seed, we are in the National Championship game.
Kentucky might be the best 8 seed in the history of the tournament. The seeding this year was almost comically out of kilter with reality.
