Early Enrollees

Submitted by reddogrjw on

Can finally post a new topic and have not seen this before, but I am relatively new to the board

What is the limit for how many early enrollees we can have?

What determines this?

There are quite a few commits and targets planning to enroll early - could this be a problem?

On a related note, what is the scholarship situation currently? IIRC, the 2016 recruiting class put Michigan over the 85-man limit, but several players have been lost since then... If not, what is the penalty for being over the limit?

Also, I remember there being some debate on whether Ryan Glasgow and Kenny Allen would receive scholarships again this season because of the scholarship cap. Has that been resolved?

You can't go over the limit - the end. M was technically never over the limit as Glasgow and Allen don't have guaranteed scholarships as former walkons (they were always going to find one for them..). At present we are 1 or 2 under the limit which means schollies for a few more walkons for 2016.

As for EEs, I believe this is where the 25 per year Big 10 limit comes into play. We did 27 last year (minus Hawkins) but had 6 EEs so I think that is a net 21 = 4 EE spots for 2017, could very well be wrong.

A lot of threads lately speak to how many new people are here. I'd love to know the number of sign ups this year.

I have never heard that there is a limit. Maybe there is a limit to how many can he back dated, but I can't possibly see how the NCAA could limit the number of early enrollees (or what purpose it would serve).

We had 27 commits last year. 7 enrolled early and backdated to 2015. And 28 is the max per class. Some guys that are looking to EE are Hall, Woods, Dytarious Johnson/Hawkins (if they wanna come). Targets include DPJ, Wilson, Ruiz, Ambry, JKP.

I think that in the Big Ten the limit for class size was set to 25, but you can technically go over that by three, which means you have to backdate 3 scholarships, making the maximum class size 28 for anyone in the conference. As for early enrollees, I think it is 8 for Michigan. I could be wrong, but I think that's how the Big Ten handles it. Other conferences have different rules, and in the SEC, you can backdate scholarships to years before the student was in fact born, but not before the state in which the university sits became a state.

That was a change the Big Ten was able to push through.

The 28 that you mentioned is not about backdating. The NCAA still allows oversigning by three. That allows teams to account for players who will fail to qualify, run afoul of the law before admission, etc. It also leads to players getting cut or grayshirted. I believe the Big Ten has a stricter rule about oversigning.

You can backdate more than three players, if you have the space in the previous class.

the whole class could early enroll and 5 or 6 could be counted for 2016 and the rest 2017?

seems odd

also seeing Darnay Holmes wanted to go to Stanford but since they do not allow EE Michigan may get him - why wouldn't they allow EE?  seems dumb

You can backdate scholarships to the previous class if they enroll early. The number is determined based on how many scholarships it would take to get the previous class back to or up to 25. Last year we had 22 so we can count 3 early enrollees for this class. If any other members of last years class are no longer on the team then their spot can be filled by an early enrollee and not be counted towards this years class as well.

how many players are on scholarship when they arrive. There is always a limit of 85.

No one knows now how much room there will be in January. Aside from the usual attrition issues, some seniors will stay in school for the winter term. They count as scholarship players if they do, even if their elibility has run out.

The number of scholarships that can be backdated is determined by how many players were in the 2016. class. There's no set limit for backdating, but those plus the 2016 class can't exceed 25.

We had 29 commits in the 2016 class. Two did not enroll. We had room to backdate all seven EEs to the 2015 class. That leaves 20 and means we will be able to backdate five 2017 recruits. Theoretically, we could have a class of 30, plus more with grayshirts/blueshirts, assuming enough attrition to stay within the 85 limit.

for the winter semester. It's as simple as that for scholarship players. They count whether their eligibility has just run out or not. It doesn't automatically apply to walkons that were awarded a scholarship.

One of the reasons for Beckman's dismissal at Illinois was that he was pulling scholarships for seniors after the season to make way for early entries. That was an issue even though they had graduated.

At most, there's only a few days between the draft deadline and the start of classes. I doubt many players wait until then to make up their minds. Some players going in the draft stay in school anyway.

We had to limit how many of those we offered. I would expect it to be the same this year.  At the moment it looks like we'll have a minimum of six EE places available. Probably more will open up, but there's no way to know how many.
