Dump the Maize-Out
I am not sold on the Maize-Out, whether a formally declared one, or a de-facto one like last Saturday.
It is neither impressive nor intimidating. It merely has the effect of a bunch of people at a Sunday summer lawn concert in a peaceful field of dandelions. If Hayden Fry were still coaching, he would decorate the visitor's locker room with pictures of our Maize-Outs.
This is what a Michigan Big House crowd should look like:

A loud, angry, intimidating crowd, dressed in dark blue. So what if it does not look cute on TV.
Perhaps just the student section should wear Maize for contrast, but the rest of the crowd should go back to dark blue.
Discuss.

Dust off the old blue shirts. If you need a new one, uncle Bill would love to sell you one.
Wear the Maize shirts to the violin recital.

perhaps it was all those mad dogs from junior year got us thinking on the same wavelength
it would make the student section 10000 times more intimidating as you can see they stand out to the eye... and the old people could wear colors most of them have (navy).

UM crowds are filled with a bunch of puss bags anyway. last saturday there was about a minute left in the first half, right after Sheridan threw that pick, and the D obviously needed a big stop but everybody was sitting on their fucking hands. and some fuck-stick behind me kept yelling at us "hey sit down. if you want to stand go in the student section." i told him to shut his fucking trap before i beat his ass and if he wanted to sit all day he should sit on his fucking couch (i didn't really say any of that, but i didn't sit). i was glad to see that everybody was standing and making noise almost the entire 4th, but still that place really pisses me off sometimes.

Several years ago, in the first year that the Athletic Department actually got involved in promoting Maize-outs, they also promoted a blue-out. Although participation in that particular blue-out was actually higher than it had been in maize-outs prior, the visual effect was far less impressive. Maize stands out and catches the eye. A sea of navy t-shirts or hoods fades easily into the background, and actually has the effect of highlighting those NOT wearing blue. Now, if 99% of the crowd were wearing blue, then making that 1% stand out might be a great way to enforce compliance. But if "only" 75% of the crowd is wearing blue, then you can't even tell there's supposed to be a blue-out going on. By contrast, when 75% of the crowd is wearing yellow, at least you can tell. Bottom line: if everyone participates, than any color will work (and blue might be awesome). But because not everyone participates, maize is the better choice.
And believe itor not, things have gotten much better. Look at aerial shots of the stadium from, say, 10 years ago: you can't even tell where the student section is, and half the crowd is wearing white.
Now if only we could get the bookstores to stop selling red shirts that say "Michigan" in white letters. I mean, seriously.September 2nd, 2008 at 5:29 PM ^

Without a maize jersey (which, let me be plain, I do NOT support), I do not see a Maize out every fully working. You're going to have people who insist on wearing their jersey because it is what they always wear and it hurts the overall effect, but I also don't want to tell someone that the $50 they have spent on a jersey is useless to be worn at a game because we're attempting to establish some strange conformity of color.
Michigan fans in blue, Michigan fans in maize, Michigan fans in white. It doesn't matter what they are wearing as long as they are supporting the team with vigor, no?

I just wish the fans knew when to cheer.
When your defense is on the field cheer loudly,
when your offense is on the field don't cheer loudly...
Also, stand and cheer on key plays don't sit around like an opera house. Michigan fans are the worst sort of fans, old and crabby.
