DT Maurice Hurst Jr makes a friend at Mott Children's Hospital

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Trevor Sullivan is a 14 year old kid waiting for a heart transplant.  Maurice Hurst went to visit him at the hospital and they've become friends.

I know all the players make visits there, but Hurst has really taken it to another level.  Hanging out with the kid, having dinner at his house, etc.

Hurst sets an example that everyone should follow.  I'm proud to have him representing the University of Michigan.

This has been your feel good story of the week.

P.S.  Trevor has a GoFundMe page accepting donations to help out with current and future medical bills.  I imagine that a 14 year old with a new heart will be racking up some pretty big bills.

EDIT:  Link to his GoFundMe page.

Finding ways to make your position as a University of Michigan athlete beneficial to others in need is great. To not only go in the first place but make sure a relationship is formed is awesome. Proud of Mo.

all the athletes that do this.  I think that there are actually a lot of M athletes that create these types of bonds with these kids.  My wife works in Motts oncology and when we went to one of her patients cancer free celebrations, there was a reciever there who was good friends with the patients and family.  I wish there were more reports and focus in the NCAA about these positive things rather than how many bagels can be served or athletes being jerks.

It's always good to hear that these players are visiting the children's hospital. It really does help.

Honest question: Is it ok for someone with a heart condition to watch horror movies, with all those jump scares?

I've had a chance to talk to Mo a few times and he is really an awesome guy. Clearly very bright and cares a lot about what he does on and off the field.

I do not know MH Jr or his motivations on a personal level.  However, I would think that with all academic  and football responsibiliies as well as family and friends MH Jr has a big heart!  Seems at least publicly as this story is written about that he is Genuine!  This is to be celebrated!  Great big heart in what seems to be a great human being representing his family his university and his character!

these kind of stories were given the same publicity as a kid given crab legs, etc. Many that do these kinds of.....human, decent & genuinely human acts (best I can explain it as I become very touched when anyone behaves how human beings should behave) don't want it known. Most are ok with it being known but they don't advertise that they're doing it so when these stories come to light with almost zero coverage in relation to what Johnny Football is/isn't doing every hour hurts my heart. So, thanks for posting here. However, Hurst not the main story & I know he'd agree. No controversy there as he's doing an absolute good. An absolute good. Yet, I sincerely the young guy comes to a day where he can say he's HAD a successful heart transplant. I'm not sure about a full transplant but a sibling of mine had his left aortic valve replaced with a titanium valve at Motts a few years back and it was all class. The main surgeon performed the operation that day and on the very same day turned an infant's severely damaged heart (in the waiting room you're not trying to listen but it's so quiet) that was essentially half a heart into a functional heart. He had to tell the family (I still get choked up retelling it) that their baby's life until they could get a heart for transplant went from essentially 0% to "very good" & rhythm posed by the mother for a percentage said "a solid 75%". Again, half a heart into a functional heart! Can you imagine that? It's heartbreakingly beautiful. Those people are just terrific. My sibling's surgery was/is major but he knocked that out in a few hours. When he told us everything went fine I held off breaking down for a sec out of relief as he very professionally filled us in. I got the impression that he could have done that with his eyes closed. He left & I lost it in relief for a second. So, if done there I know he'd be in good hands. I truly hope everything works out & I hope stories like this change the minds of people that aren't organ donors. If anything happened to me I'd want every useable piece of my body go to help another. I'd no longer need it. Best of luck to him & I'm proud of anyone with any influence that uses their time for such an absolute good. Sorry so long.

The connection between UM athletes and Mott is long and not storied near enough.  My mom has worked there for over 20 years and the players and coaches from multiple (if not all) sports have been visiting the kids the whole time she's been there.
