Is Dork Mantoni's demise all in our heads?

Submitted by stjoemfan on November 14th, 2019 at 11:45 AM

I have looked at publications around the country. Sparty is ignored everywhere but the state of Michigan. Basically no one outside of here cares about them or their miserable coach.

So, is his demise only in our and sparty fans' heads? Almost everyone on here and 90% of the sparties figure he's gone either by quitting or being fired.

I'm starting to believe he'll be back. He's the only sparty coach in the last 30 years that has had success over us and that is the most important thing to that cesspool up north.

I've been wrong many times before and maybe this idea is only in my head. Again, no one else cares but the state of Michigan.

I mean by demise do you mean it is 100% that he won't be back next year? Because I don't think that is 100% for sure. However, demise as in his program is going the wrong direction and has been the last couple of years is not really debatable. I mean you are right that nationally MSU is a non story because despite MSU thinking otherwise at times nobody has ever given a rat's ass about them nationally.

Dantonio's ultimate demise will be worse if he does return. Next year's roster will have less talent than this year's and a giant question mark at QB. His recruiting has dropped quite a bit with no turnaround in sight. Rumors of him stepping down will only make it worse.

None of this means Dantonio won't return. He has a $4.3 million stay bonus due Jan 15.

After watching the coaching stupidity Mork displayed in the Arizona State and Illinois games - there is no question he is dumb enough to return next year.

And I hope he does - 2020 is going to get really ugly for Sparty football.  Mork's "legacy" will deterioriate rapidly the longer he stays.

I almost feel sorry for him.  Almost.  Fuck him and Sparty.

I think it's more likely he stays rather than get fired or retire. I think winning the game is more about putting a foot definitively down on a rival and positioning yourself as the dominant team.

I could see it going either way. The program has slipped in the last couple of years and based on recent recruiting and his shuffling of the coaching staff I'm not sure he'll be able to get it back to where it used to be. However, he might drag it out for a few more years.

After his great 1966 team, Duffy Daugherty couldn't manage anything better than a 6-5 season. He still hung on until after the 1972 season (when he was 1-3 against Bo). At the time Daugherty was one of the best two coaches in school history and you could have made a case he was the best. (I'd put him as #3 behind Clarence Munn and Dantonio.)

If Dantonio wins Saturday he'll probably stay--unless he wants to retire on a high note.

If Dantonio loses he could get forced out--unless the AD doesn't want to.

All I care about is Michigan kicking his ass this Saturday.  (Or just beating him at the very least.)

His future, his demise or whether his angry constipated face finally falls in on itself seems more like an off season topic.

Beat now.  Speculate later.

Another thing that brings me joy:

All the Sparty shirts and hats and jackets that all the sparties were wearing have been put back in their drawers probably moth eaten, until they dare bring them out again.

I couldn't care less about Dantonio.  All this misery he's brought on himself and if MSU wants to keep him around; great.  The rot has begun and can't be reversed at this point, so please Mark, dig in, stick around, and further tarnish this legacy that all those mouth-breathers over at RCMB seem to revere.

Yes.  The reality is Staee is a regional school.  Their biggest presence outside of the state is in Chicago.  That chafes lil bro.

Michigan on the other hand is an international brand.

I'll believe Mork is done when I see it.  My guess, when he gets deposed after the season, that will influence his future employment more than anything else.  If left up to Mork himself, he ain't going anywhere.

There is a surprising vein of Michigan and Michigan State fans in Tennessee and Kentucky. They are a legacy from the 50s, 60s, and 70s when itinerant auto workers would spend a few years in Detroit, head home for a few years, then repeat the cycle when money was tight. I swear I met more MSU fans in my 8 years in Knoxville and Nashville than I did growing up in NW Ohio.

Weirdly enough, most of them were fairly pleasant. Any Big 10 fans in the south are just glad to meet a college football fan that doesn't confuse Alabama's success for their own.

Well there are 0.0% fans of them here in Northern Ohio.  Hell most folks around these parts just figure they're a really good MAC school that plays a ton of B1G games.

Travel around the USA and especially internationally.  I ALWAYS run into people wearing Michigan gear-ive never seen anyone in MSUs.

They are irrelevant.

Same here (Colorado).  A neighbor a couple of doors down is flying an Iowa flag right now.  Across the street, there's a Nebraska flag flying.  We all get along great because of B1G ties.

Interestingly enough, every Nebraska fan over 35 that I've met hates OSU with everything in their being... even more than the Buffs... I think it has something to do when they all went to Columbus for the first time.  he he he.

But I digress.  This is thread is about hating on Sparty.  Fuck 'em.

I hope he stays. One of the great joys in college football (for me anyway) is to see him with that sourpuss face on the sidelines when they are getting beat.

LOL. I have never seen that variation of his name, but it made me laugh aloud. How sophomoric of me, but whatever.

I don't understand the connection you're making between the amount of national publicity they're getting and Dantonio's future.  Even when strong, MSU football gets limited national attention.

Dantonio almost certainly will not be fired unless he pulls a Woody Hayes.  He's MSU's winningest coach.  But there is some reason to believe that he'll call it a career sometime soon.

I doubt he would want to hang on more years just to try and beat Michigan one more time. If we beat them Saturday, he will be 8-5 against Michigan in his career. A very respectable record for an MSU coach. He would retire with alot of goodwill from the program and fans, regardless.

Their team is going to be awful next year unless something drastic happens. Their schedule is not easy. N'W, @BYU, Toledo, Miami FL, @Iowa, Michigan, OSU, @Indiana, Minnesota, @PSU, Rutgers, @Maryland. With how their offense has looked, plus they'll be replacing their Qb and no skill player depth, losing some good players on defense, recruiting has been mediocre........If you told me they only won 3-4 games next year, I would not be surprised.

Dantonio hanging on, hoping for one more win against Michigan is going to get his record against us to .500 or worse in the process. Might as well leave with a very good winning%.

 Their schedule is not easy.

Hmmm... I'd suggest Rutgers, Toledo, Iowa, and Maryland are winnable games (unless someone pulls a Sparty Nooooo).

NW is down presently.

BYU is an enigma.  They beat BSU but with SDSU, Liberty, UMASS, etc., it's hard to say how good BYU actually is.

The hardest part is the gauntlet all the teams the top of the B1G East has to run every season.

What will fuck Statee in 2020 is their QB situation.  Lombardi is not.  good.  at.  all.

Just win Saturday and not worry if he comes back or not. We are 2-2 vs him in the Harbaugh era. 2-3 would suck ass. Win the game.

I think pretty soon we are going to reach danger levels of mocking MSU, where the only possible outcome is some cosmic negative-karma supernatural event resulting in a loss.

So with that in mind:

Michigan State is a very gritty tough minded football team with good players and they always come to play.  They have had some tough breaks this year with injuries and a tough schedule that really took its toll.  Michigan is a big game for them and there is no doubt they will show up and be ready to go.  Both teams will be ready and will play hard, and the better team will prevail.

I truly hope Dantonio keeps coming back, it would be amazing to see that awful look on his face every year Michigan continues to smash them into oblivion. His claim to fame will be the "trouble with the snap" 2015 playoff run which began the downfall of his program, sans the 10-3 record in 2017. Staeee will never again make the CFP and I am willing to bet they go at least 5+ years without making it back to Indy. They are now relegated back to nothingness.
