Does Howard Survive This?

Submitted by ldd10 on February 20th, 2022 at 3:06 PM

He's had plenty of issues before keeping his anger in check, but you CAN NOT throw a punch at an opposing coach/player as the frickin' head coach.  Just utter lunacy, never seen it.

Minimum I have to imagine he's suspended for rest of year.

Do we think he gets fired?

I'm really at a loss for words, who knows what's going to happen?

Suspension for sure, firing? Maybe.

Not good at all, Juwan needs to have more control, Gard was being a dick with the TO and acting like that but you just can't do that, Juwan.

How do we even know he said something about the TO or was pissed about it? That’s just what the announcers said. He could easily have been pissed about a million things Wisconsin or Gard did. Seems weird everyone is already running with this narrative when it was basically just speculation from one guy.

This was my take, too: Gard putting his hand on Juwan's chest catalyzed the affair. But it's going to be down the list of unacceptable occurrences once you nail the assistant--whether the guys was egging Juwan on, messing with one of our players. . . And your basically giving your players license, as coach to go when you throw the first hand--open or closed.

I am incredibly sad about this.

He saw clearly that is was wrong for players to jump into the fight. He completely agreed with the reporter asking about it. He gave a great answer to that. But he doesn't see he is the one that lead them into it. I mean, there wasn't just the one outburst of throwing the punch at the coach. It took a lot to hold him back after that.

There is a anger management problem with Coach Howard. He should not be a head coach until he gets to the place where he sees it was wrong for him to fight too, in the same way he saw it was wrong for the players to do it.

I love Juwan, loved everything about him, loved this season.

But he threw a hand that landed and started a brawl where a bunch of punches were thrown by his and the other teams players

It hurts deep, but if this was happening at any other school we'd probably be saying he's gone.

but this is family and we deal with it.

What happened didn't happen in the "family".

I don't think anyone outside of Michigan circles is thinking that it should be left with the Michigan "family" to deal with this. And I don't think a lot of people inside Michigan circles are thinking that either.

This is egregious. I'm sorry. I like Juwan Howard. It was a very cool moment when he made his way to congratulate Jim Harbaugh after the Ohio St game. But keeping him on as coach would be a very bad look for Michigan. It's clear by now he has anger problems.

Should Howard have thrown a punch?  No.  He does claim someone laid a hand on him and he was just responding. Note the excerpt from ESPN below.  I get the impropriety of what took place but it wasn't as if no one else was pure as the fallen snow.  The man made a mistake.  Suspend him for a few games but fire him?  Because he cast a bad light on our holy University?  On please....after Anderson, Schlissel and a host of other not so positive items, this is not a mortal sin. How many times have we seen Izzo  grab a kid in the heat of passion?

I have to admit as someone who spent more than a few days in a locker room, that Howard has the kind of passion that would make me want to play for him, but that's me.

From ESPN's website:

"I didn't like the timeout they called, and I'm being totally honest with you," Howard said. "I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially with it being a large lead. ... I thought that wasn't fair to our guys. And so that's what happened."

Howard said he reacted after someone from Wisconsin put hands on him, though he didn't specify who did it.

"Someone touched me, and I think it was very uncalled for, for them to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another. That's what escalated it," he said.

The Badgers were up 15 when Gard took a timeout with 15 seconds left.

The situation started in the handshake line when Gard put his hands on Juwan who then overreacted. I see both coaches getting suspended with Juwan’s penalty more severe. Manuel should take action before the Big 10 does.

Gard is an ass and that’s why he had a quasi-mutiny before the season started.

Not a good look for Michigan basketball.

Hard to say. Really bad look. No idea what was said but can never take a swing at a coach.

I think he is done for at least the regular season.  He may be gone gone.

It wasn't a punch at all. He tried to snatch him up by the collar. You see can see his hand squeeze as he misses the shirt. You can also that guy continually marching forward towards Michigan's coaches and players, and somebody on Wisconsin's staff has a grip on Williams and won't let go. Juwan wasn't right for doing what he did, but there's more blame to go around than just him. And in no world was that a punch. It's more likely he was snatching a dude up because they had hands on his players.

Did not say he punched him.  Said he took a swing.  An open hand swing is still a swing.  Grabbing and pushing is a bad look swing your arm is, in my opinion, a worse look.

no one handled it well but this will fall more on Michigan than Wisconsin. It will be because of that swing.

Woody Hayes was a sick old POS that even OSU fans didn't defend - he hit an opposing player that was in football gear with a single swing. This incident could have resulted in an all out brawl with several people possibly getting hurt. You just don't throw punches no matter what was said - plain and simple. No way to defend it

He is done and should be done. It’s not the fact he tried to grab that assistant it’s the fact he put his players in that situation.

Trying to make the tournament and you pull that getting your kids suspended. Don’t let the door hit you

Agree. That was stupidity beyond belief. He's supposed to be guiding his young men, not the one taking a swing at opponents and triggering this fiasco. Still can't believe what happened every time I watch that video. And keep in mind, this isn't the first time. He also went after that Maryland coach last year

According to RCMB, Martelli is the head coach. Or is he only the coach when Michigan is going good?

Maybe we find out the whole story on why he did what he did.

Have him sit out the rest of the year.

Honestly, I don't know.

I know there's a lot of people out there who are defending him from getting fired, and I don't know why. You have to accept it is a possibility.

This is a REALLY BAD look. For all of us that make fun of Bobby Knight throwing a chair, this is worse.

Do I think he'll be fired? No, probably not. But it would not at all surprise me, especially for Michigan that prides themselves on the image of being an honorable program.
