Do you believe in hypnotism? The Texas Longhorns do.

I've been to Vegas and have seen this done live, and I still don't believe it. What say you?

To paraphrase the goose in Kung Fu Panda, all you need for something to be special is to believe it is.

Mental aspect is a huge part of sports. So whether it works in reality or not, if they think it works (and helps) then it does.

Went to a hypnotism show recently. I was a skeptic in the past, but when they fully explained what hypnotism actually was and invited unsuspecting volunteers who I knew personally on stage to do it - that changed real fast.

It’s real, but you can’t get hypnotized if you don’t want to. It’s like a certain kind of meditation - it takes focus and volition.

My wife is a psychologist at the VA and uses hypnosis as one of many techniques for her patients. She's gone to a ton of trainings on the techniques and is pretty sold that in certain circumstances it can help.

It generally isn't what it looks like on TV--more a deep state of quiet wakefulness, like you might get with meditation.

So, as often happens, it's neither complete bunk nor a cure-all (although it's those things for some people), but one of many ways of helping people calm their minds down enough to focus on some things.

I believe in magic, in a young girl's heart...  But seriously, I have gone to a weekend CE training in hypnosis and saw it work first hand.  The instructor convinced two nurses that their hands were numb and proceeded to poke needles through the skin of their hands without moving.  Then we transferred the numbness to their jaw and I poke needles in their gums without them moving.  Cool stuff.

Part of the "Welcome, Freshmen" events during my first year at Michigan had a hypnotist putting on his show at the League. It was legitimate...the one moment that stood out was he had a couple people speaking different languages. I think he told one of them that he was a stand-up comic and so the guy ends up trying to tell jokes in Chinese. Pretty funny stuff.

No logical way the mind could only be inside the body, this is becoming more and more clear as they try to create AI.

Therefore, if some of the mind must exist outside the body what happens if you focus all it there?

I personally believe our connection to the cognitive circuit has to be stronger than our connection to our electrified meat sacks.

But hey that's just me and Buddhist way.

First off, don't need the "wave of hand" that's theatrics :)

Problem with "force choke" is you have to convince the other guy you are choking him and if he doesn't believe in it, it can't work; so the ignorant would actually be immune, makes it much less useful.

Force push is more difficult because your mind can only manifest the resonant pattern you still need some sort of highly charged electromagnetic energy to push /pull, attract/repel, gravitize /anti- gravitize ...etc. Maybe you could create an arena with a big EM field and lot's of conductive materials.

Of course, it's greatest power is perspective, thus making the Army game not so concerning.

My late father-in-law was a three pack a day smoker. He went to a hypnotist when he was 58, and quit cold turkey. Managed to live until he was 72 with emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis. Hypnosis/quitting smoking probably extended his life 10 years. That's all I know about hypnosis.

Hey, if they think it works, then go for it. Sometimes just thinking something works for you is advantageous, even if there's no actual physical benefit to go with it.

Maybe we should try it with our team the week before the OSU game. We've tried everything else, so what can it hurt?

Hypnosis isn't what you see in the movies. It's just deep relaxation, not mind control. The stage-performance hypnosis stuff you see at clubs and whatnot is mostly something else-- similar to faith healing spectacles, it relies on the pressure of expectations to draw out the "act" of the volunteers on stage, who are mostly just following directions because they're on stage and open to it.

Had a hypnotist come in when I was in high school, and I was one of the few chosen to come on stage. It was complete bullshit. I was told to go along with it.

Has anyone here been hypnotized? If so... how'd it feel? I saw that video and I'm genuinely curious if hypnotism is real or not. The video was hilarious, though. The one kid seemed genuinely pissed when the hypnotist said 'thank you' lol.

I honestly don't know what to make of it.

Hypnotism is real, but some people are much less susceptible to it than others.  I've seen it in a mass demonstration where I knew the people it worked on, and I could very much tell that it was a different mental state for them, not fake, and not just them playing along.
