DJ Durkin Appreciation Thread

Submitted by LJ on

There are some pretty immature, pathetic comments trashing Durkin in the threads below this one.  You guys should be ashamed.  Neg away, but I'd rather appreciate Durkin for helping turn this defense into one of the country's best.  God forbid he leave for a raise and a promotion somewhere else (and god forbid he offers some of our other staffers raises and promotions as well).

You wanted a good program?  This is what you get.  This is how you build a coaching tree.  Every other DC candidate takes notice that after good work under Harbaugh, your career is in good shape.

Thanks, Coach Durkin.  It was a great year, and we appreciate your work.

Oh but it was fine for Hackett to be talking to Harbaugh before the end of his season and for Harbaugh to be "lining up his next gig" instead of prepping for the rest of the Niners' games? And if you're not convinced he worked magic here, why are you disappointed in him leaving? I smell special pleading...

Plus the D was Gerg-level awful against OSU, which is amazing given the amount of talent and experience (even minus the 3 starters on DL) he had to work with.

I mean I know we have up 42 points to them each of the last 3 years...and yet it certainly felt like last Saturday's performance was by far the worst. They scored 6 consecutive times and basically let off the gas. They could have scored at least 2-3 more times if they really needed to.

I wanted to be more mad, but the fact is, his time at Michigan is not what made him able to be a head coach. He was probably very close to having opportunities like this when he left Florida. He has earned a shot at a head coaching gig. Yeah I wish he would stay, but showing that we can move staff up and out will ultimately be better for our program than any one coordinator.

i would be more fine with it if he didn't go to a school in the same division. He's the enemy now. Michigan should be more than a one year stepping stone to head coach.

OH NO! Our opponents are going to smell blood in the water now that they know we appreciate former coaches even if they leave! I'm shaking just thinking about what Urban Meyer and Dantonio are going to do with the newfound knowledge that MGoBlog posters are soft.

I don't understand this point of view. It literally doesn't matter at all.

Pimped? You think Harbaugh didn't know he was on track to become a head coach somewhere? Come on. I know we all have loyalties to UM and our program comes first but he just made a massive life decision, one that I think was the right one. I'm sure Harbaugh is sooooo pissed that his friend got this opportunity. Bo? Rolling in his grave!

DJ did a great job with our defense, I'm just mad he's trying to take away Partridge. Especially since, whether irrational or not, it seems that he was not prepared for the OSU game. Could've played a significant role in getting us a rose bowl bid. But thank you for Turing this defense from good to elite.

We didn't look elite towards the end of the season. He took a good defense and trended it about where you would expect with one more year of maturity. Did our NT getting hurt cause the huge decline in our defense, or did DJ have other stuff on his mind? If the former, I'd expect Glasgow to be a hot hot hot commodity come draft time.

Yeah I agree. Thought my post was getting a little long so I didn't add that our defense's transformation could've been Harbaugh instilling a killer mentality in a potentially great defense. Our LBs, which Durkin coached, were the weakness of our defense, even cost us a few games. It seems like Durkin got the defense hype train rolling, peaking after NW, and it just cruised to Maryland.

But, like WD said, the way this is going down looks really bad.  Durkin interviews the week of the most important game of the year, while we are still in the hunt for the B1G Championship, and the defense lays an egg.  That's just disloyal to the players and to Harbaugh, unless there was some clear and frank consent going on from Harbaugh.

The move to take Partridge also looks really slimey.  Harbaugh set a system in place to help recruiting and now Durkin is trying to hijack it.  This could be consensual among the coaches, but it probably isn't and, if its not, Durkin is crossing the line from 'this is how business is done' to intentionally undermining the institution he is leaving.  It's bad enough to allow yourself to be distracted at this time of year.  It's another thing entirely if one of his selling points to the Maryland AD was, "Here's how I'm going to hijack Michigan and build a NJ recruiting footprint for Maryland."

There is a stark contrast between the way Durkin handled this and numerous other coaches handled similar transitions.  In my opinion, the other transitions were more honorable with the departing assistant leaving in a way that wasn't disloyal to his former program.

If this is as bad as it looks, fuck Durkin and I can't wait to crush Maryland next year.  If it isn't as bad as it looks, good luck to him.

my main point is that if everything was above board and consented to by Harbaugh, I'm ok with it.  Otherwise, I think its disloyal.  There is a difference between leaving for a better opportunity and stabbing your former boss in the back in order to get or take advantage of said opportunity.  This looks bad, but it might not be.  At the end of the day, I don't really care because Maryland is and will always be bad.  Maryland and Rutgers are two of the worst coaching opportunities in D1 college football.  However, I don't see why we should be appreciating Durkin if he is doing these things.

Hats off to DJ Durkin.  May he be the start of a long and storied Harbaugh-at-Michigan coaching tree.

All the guy did was come in, do a very good job, and then advance his career.  I can't hate the guy one bit for doing this.  The only gripe I have is him interviewing during The Game week - but there's no way that happened without Harbaugh's blessing.

Other coordinator candidates will take comfort in knowing that Harbaugh sees the bigger picture, and wants them to succeed.  I honestly think Durkin getting this job is a great thing for Michigan long-term.

Same here.

Maybe some stuff went down at the end, maybe it didnt.  Its a lot of rife speculation and a mob mentality right now.  Who knows the reality.  I only wish he had waited 8 days to get involved in this garbage.

What will be funny if he is offered the HC gig in say 6 years and the board will fellate him at that time ("Michigan Man!") and talk about the great run in 2015 and continuing the tradition at UM blah balh.

I don't begrudge the guy leaving, but sure seems like he was interviewing before the OSU game and our D performance in that game makes it look like he was just going through the motions, regardless of what he said.

So there's that. Add in that he's already trying to pilfer staff and yeah, no warm feelings or well wishes here for him.

Durkin coached here for one year, shit the bed in the most important game of the season, and then left for the first HC position he was offered. In the same division we play in. And he's poaching staff on the way out. Fuck him.

San Diego Mick

Look, he did a good job but he had a lot of talent coming back and then he bolts after one season and is trying to poach who knows how many guys.

Plus the prep work for the OSU game has to come into question now because we sure as hell didn't make any damn adjustments for The Game.

So spare me the attitude.

How much of it was really him?

The defense wasn't that bad last year. They just had zero help from their offense and that's like piling things on a table with an unsteady leg. It will only last so long before it gives out.

Regardless, thanks for your time for spring ball, recruiting, fall camp and coaching 11 games.

I can't remember a more fun 3-game stretch than that shutout streak. BYU, some shitty program that will never amount to anything in the B1G and Northwestern.

See ya November 5th. May your defense give up another 42 points the next time you're in The Big House.

Sincerely yours in internets, WD

I'm at a loss to explain how people can absolve Durkin of having no loyalty to the program yet demand loyalty to Durkin from the fans.  Astoundingly stupid.
