position. I've heard stuff about Toney Clemons transferring? Seeing as he hasn't contributed much while here I don't see it as a big deal, but wanted to see if anyone had any info.

we replace Peace with Dale Peterman, if they were really pushing him to play corner. But honestly, I think its time to give up on Texas. Too much effort for kids to bail on us because they don't like cold weather.

Whether it's because of the cold weather or not, pulling in kids from Texas has been difficult lately. Mallett, McGuffie, Beaver, Peace... There were a couple guys last year who showed heavy interest and then backed off. I'm not saying it's pointless to recruit Texas, but there have been enough failures there to possibly rethink our efforts in that state.

Not to sound like an old man, but high-school kids will complain about virtually anything. Yes, it's cold up here - deal with it. If a kid plans on playing in the NFL, he going to have to get used to playing in places colder than 50 degrees in the winter. If the reason you don't want to play somewhere is because it gets cold during the winter, then you probably aren't that sold on the team anyway. Finally, it's not like Michigan suddenly experienced a cold snap in the past 2 years - Carr, Moeller, etc. found a way to recruit kids from Cali and Texas in the past, and I don't think that RR should close a pipeline like Texas just because a few kids mentioned they didn't like the weather on the way out.

I don't think it's a question of pulling out completely. I think it's just a question of how heavily we should recruit the state. Should we "waste" our time going after so-so recruits or should we just pick out the elite ones? Should we go after guys who are iffy about the weather/distance or should we just go after guys who have midwestern roots/a strong desire to wear the winged helmet?

Well no question go after elite talent where we can get it. My point was just for each guy like McGuffie, Mallet, Peace and Beaver who either make it on campus and transfer or never make it on campus. There is a guy like Ortmann, Woolfolk, Stonum, Robinson and Herron. All of whom appear will be contributors.

This was inevitable. The last time I talked to him, it was more like his Dad made him stay than anything. The coaches made an in home visit, not sure what they said, then he decided to stay. He thinks he's better than he is, a la Jordan Barnes. I don't see this as a bad thing, especially if it opens up a spot for someone we weren't expecting, or are hoping for anyway.

I also don't think this decommitment hurts us much, since I think Peace was bound to be a benchwarmer. But damnit...we've been hovering around 20 recruits for a couple months. Every time someone commits, someone else decommits. We're never going to build back up our scholarship numbers if we can't get a full class of recruits. Oh well. I kind of like the way the Peterman kid plays corner. He looks like a solid tackler, although he's kind of a risk taker in pass defense.

Ziff, We've got Stokes coming in on the 16th and Adrian Witty (Denard Robinson's teammate) coming in this weekend. I'd say if Stokes doesn't work out Witty gets an offer, and may anyway if they feel it'll help with Denard. (Just a guess). All three WRs are relatively the same size, with speed being the difference with Peace/Stokes and no info on Witty in that regard.

I know next to nothing about DeWayne Peace, but I can't blame Peace for seeing the situation for what it really is... On offense, at least, he was just a name to beef up the number of wideouts. We've got a lot of youngsters in the position already and it seems very likely that Ricardo and Jeremy J. would jump over him the second they arrive. I don't think anyone had visions of DeWayne Peace wearing the #1 in Ann Arbor. If we get anyone this year, I would hope it's Stokes. He gets his media coverage of the kid here in PA and he's legit.

Witty has an offer, and is unranked by rivals, and a ** to Scout. He has an offer because he's Denard Robinson's best friend, and Robinson's coach has suggested that they may be a "package" deal. The two schools to offer both are us and Florida International. Witty is a pawn in the game to get Robinson - I'm not sure he's a viable player.

While rankings give us an indication I would not write off Witty as uesless or a pawn. Every year you hear of the Pat White's and Nate Davis's of the world so he may be a player at some point you never know. Also, I understand we may not have offered Witty a scholly without Robinson, but I think these guys have enough integrity to not offer a guy who has no chance of ever playing just to get another guy. That's not fair to the kid and the scholly is too valuable. I think the conspiracy theories get a little overblown.

As someone who grew up in Texas and then attended Michigan, I can tell you that the weather is a major factor. I thought I could adjust, but it was too much. Every year in college the weather got worse and worse; by senior year I was on the edge of going crazy. I went from mid 70 degree weather in December to snow and blizzards in Ann Arbor. After 4 years of living in Michigan, I'll never live in a cold weather place again. Don't discount the weather factor for these kids; it really means alot.

That damn work always gets in the way Hey WestTexas nice that you're honest, but from someone shoveling snow at 5:30am this morning. I got 1 word for you....pussy. You can let me know that you are golfing later today to get me back. :-)

Except for when the high is 3,000 degrees on account of wildfires. Besides, there are a million reasons why I wouldn't want to live in SoCal. Weather being one of them - it may sound weird to people who think there's only one good kind of weather, but I like snow, I like the cold, I like the change of seasons. I don't like the desert.

WolvinLA

January 8th, 2009 at 2:37 PM ^

Hermosa is far from the desert, and there have never been wildfires there. Do your homework. And we are a short drive from the mountains, where you can enjoy the snow without having to walk in the slush or shovel your driveway. The bottoms of my pants are never wet when I walk inside and I don't have to worry about sweating when I walk into a heated building because I was so bundled up outside I'm from MI and I'm not trying to knock it. But the weather there does suck. So I understand where these guys are coming from.

MaizeAndBlueWahoo

January 8th, 2009 at 3:59 PM ^

Hermosa's only far from the desert because it is surrounded by a sprawling mass of urban landscape, which is basically built on the desert. And said sprawling mass is, I'm afraid, a place that I have liked on neither of my visits (except for the part inside the walls of Disneyland) and would basically be the absolute last metropolitan area in the entire country I would want to live. You can pitch the mountains and stuff all you want, but if forced to move anywhere within a 200-mile radius of LA, it would take about two weeks for me to hate it. Just how I feel about it. Not everyone thinks sunny and 80 365 days a year is perfect weather.

WolvinLA

January 8th, 2009 at 6:01 PM ^

The reason I say you can't compare it the a city that really is in the desert, like Phoenix for example, is because it never gets really hot. It hasn't hit 90 in the 2 years I've lived here. So you don't have to deal with either extreme, which was your original point. And I agree with your last point that not everyone thinks sunny and 80 is perfect weather. But more people prefer it than 4 months of cold and gray and 3 months of sticky humid.

My family just came back for the holidays after spending the last 6 staying home in Dallas. Something happens to your blood, thins out during the 110 degree summers days or something. I never remember being so cold. I can't imagine how kids from the south ever decide to play in the north. Then again, those same kids are dying in August during two-a-days when it doesn't get below 90 at night. Sunny and 70 here today BTW!

W. TX makes a huge point. People who have been born and raised in Michigan have no idea the difference the weather makes. It's like being in a relationship where all your significant other does is nag for 25% of your day, then breaking up and dating someone who is actually pleasant 24/7. Or if you're going from anywhere warm to Michigan, the exact opposite. I was born and raised here but have been fortunate enough to live in warmer climes. Believe me when I say places devoid of grey skies and three inches of snow that turns into brown slush two days later actually exist! Why any of the recruits who visit this time of year choose to come here is WAY beyond me.
