Developments on NIL and Warde on money spent on assistants

There have been a couple of minor interesting pieces of information regarding NIL and Warde's spending on assistant coaches.

On Wednesday, the university announced a strategic partnership with Learfield (which has already been a partner in branding and broadcasting) and Altius Sports Partners to enhance and grow the NIL sphere in Ann Arbor. With the new partnership, Altius will hire an executive general manager for NIL who will work on campus to help facilitate deals and educate student-athletes on what’s available to them within the NIL space.

On Wednesday, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel shared that though he hired Sherrone Moore to have continuity within the program, he was aware that this mass departure was on the table and it was planned for.  Regarding the savings from Jim's contract, Warde said

“Yes — and it’s not really a savings,” Manuel said. “Prior to Jim leaving, I invested more in our assistant pool. And it really brought it up by a couple of million dollars to invest in our assistant coaches. And so that was done prior to Jim deciding to leave to go to the Chargers and that remains with Sherrone, in terms of that investment.”

Get Warde a math tutor.

More money for assistants when JH was here “minus” Jim’s salary “plus” Moore hired at significantly less “equals” Savings.

Moore $5m in 2024, vs Harbaugh's $8m 2023, the saving is real, even if you consider the $12m+ per year proposed contract for Harbaugh not real.

Even with the same 2023 budget, there are $3m extra for the assistant pool.

Yes — and it’s not really a savings

The only way that makes any sense is if he knew Harbaugh was never coming back and that money wasn't set aside. Otherwise, he's just speaking like a politician.

This is the same kind of lazy bullshit math like when they say inflation is going down.  The rate of inflation is going down.  Inflation is not going down, prices are still inflating and increasing . . . just not as fast as they were before.

If inflation is 8% one year and 4% the next, inflation has gone down. It went down from 8% to 4%. Prices have not gone down. Prices are still inflating and increasing, just not as fast because inflation - the time derivative of prices - is decreasing.

The rate of inflation is some second derivative stuff that is rarely talked about. And if it is, it is often misunderstood by people who are lazy and/or not good at math.

Not to mention all the millions of contributions/donations, additional interest in the school from partners and potential students, alums, etc. of a successful winning football program. The benefits are significantly more than the salaries of the coaches. Looking at the net income of the AD in a silo is asinine
