Detroit - Sports Capital of USA ??

Submitted by TorontoBlue on
24 hours of enduring the "anyone but Detroit" assholes about the Wings loss has gotten me thinking: Has any other US city had the decade of high-level sports events that Detroit has had from 2000 - 2009? MLB - '05 All Star Game, '06 World Series. NBA - '04 Finals, '05 Finals. NFL - '06 Super Bowl host city NHL - '02, '08, '09 Stanley Cup Finals PGA - '03 Ryder Cup NCAA - Final Four '09 host city It's been pretty sweet for local sports maniacs. Can any other city match this list?

i would have to say boston. i like detroit teams a lot more but boston has had more success in this decade. 3 super bowls, 2 mlb championships, 1 nba championship... idk about what events they've hosted but i would say that championships have a lot more relevance than hosting an event.

I think the original poster's argument is more that Detroit is the sports capital because it's where the most championship-level events have taken place. Your argument is over something a little different (most successful city in sports).

NCAA Final Four/Championship '09 Seven consecutive Eastern Conference Finals (NBA) less related, though still maybe important -JLA (Wings) is often considered the hardest place to play in the NHL -The Palace was one of the hardest, if not the hardest, places to play until a year or two ago (what happened?)

By my count only three cities (metro areas, really) in the country have hosted the championships in all four major league sports. Detroit, Miami, and LA. Nobody in their right mind would say Miami and LA are better sports towns.
