Detroit Red Wings trade D Filip Hronek, acquire first- and second-round 2023 picks

And a fourth round pick in the 2023 draft.
Trust the Yzerplan
I guess they are still in the mix to acquire Jakob Chychrun after clearing the cap space and with the 1st rd pick they received.
EDIT: Too late, Ottawa got him
The Wings were manhandled by the Sens. Chychrun makes them even bigger. Wings gotta get some nasty on the roster.
Yes, Ottawa is built for the playoffs it looks like.
This is a shocker
I wouldn't be surprised to see Bertuzzi traded next.
I smell a healthy scratch coming tomorrow night if they haven't made a move by then.
What are the diehards takes? Follow them from afar. From a distance he’s a solid top 4 or top 2 (??) young D man. Solid draft haul, yay or nay on the trade? They are right in the middle of a playoff push as well…
I definitely am not knowledgeable enough to be considered a diehard, but seems like a solid trade. Hronek is very solid / 2nd pair defenseman but is not cheap and only has 1 more year before he’s commanding a raise. And that haul is impressive - a 1st and 2nd rd pick! While the Wings played surprisingly well this year, Yzerman is sticking to the plan. They weren’t supposed to be contending this year and have had a recent slump, so selling at this point is probably the right move. Locked up Larkin and added some great draft capital in a loaded year - great week to be a Wings fan.
Defensemen usually peak later than forwards so he has some upside to go but Yzerman "sold high" here as Hronek was a hot mess a year ago. He sees them daily as does the coaches and chose to sign 2 other D-men to 2-3 year extensions and chose to get rid of Hronek. So that says something. Also we have a nice pipeline of young D who can do similar things.
As others have said the Vancouver fans are irate about this. I don't get it at all, Vancouver sucks and by the time they may be good again Hronek will be 30.
The consensus seems to be we're selling high to take our shot in a strong draft. Also Vancouver fans are up in arms about this so that bodes well too.
Vancouver currently has the 6th fewest points in the league. That gives them a 7.5% chance of getting the #1 pick. Columbus currently has a 25% chance to get it, so I’m saying……there’s a chance, albeit slim, we just traded Hronek for Bedard
Edit: Well shit, didn’t know it was the Islanders 1st. I’ll show myself out
Unfortunately not a Bedard lottery ticket. This is the NYI 1st round pick that Vancouver got via the Bo Horvat trade... it's conditional, i.e. top-12 protected.
Still a great return for Hronek in a deep draft.
Offensive defenseman, who can/has been a liability on the defensive end. Personally, I didn't think they'd get a 1st rounder for him, so I think the return was better then to be expected. The 1st rounder is from the Isles, which at this point in time would be something like the 18th pick. Yzerman seems to like to pair a left-handed and a right-handed defenseman together. Thought that might end up being Chychrun, but not now, obviously. I could see them calling up someone that they are hopeful is on the big club next year. But I could also see them getting one when they ship Bertuzzi out. I don't see them letting him potentially leave this summer without getting something. And it seems they are pretty far apart on dollars.
Yzerman should be indicted for robbery. That’s a very very good haul for a good but not great defenseman.
What a coup. With Seider coming on, Walman signed, and Edvinsson on the horizon, trading a 4.5m contract for next year for nice picks based on a probable overperformance is good business. VAN people hate it.
I think Yzerman was somewhat reluctantly keeping the team together as they were playing well and making a playoff push. What he saw in Ottawa must have convinced him to once again think long-term. The players were talking about treating the games as playoff contests. The Senators viewed them the same. Consecutive losses of 6-2 and 6-1 exposed huge problems. The Wings lack finishers, size, physicality, grit, and overall defensive play. They have some talent, but they aren't currently built for playoff style hockey.
Yep. That’s why I was fine moving on from Larkin.
