Detroit News on Brandon and Regents

Submitted by Everyone Murders on

John Niyo has a front page, above-the-fold ARTICLE on the Flint regents meeting and the general discontent with Brandon.  It's a well-balanced piece, but with little that would constitute news to the board.  That's not the point.

The point is that this remains an above-the-fold article on discontent with Brandon.  This is how what is obvious (and old hat) to frequenters of MGoBlog becomes well-known in the mainstream.  Including putting the issues in front of those who vote for regents, consequently increasing pressure on the regents to foment change and girding their loins (iccchhh) for a fight.

So thank you Detroit News and John Niyo.  Keep spreading the word!

and didn't see this posted anywhere, but this seems like the best place to share.  ESPN has an article posted about the UM leadership stressing patience with the upcoming changes/transitions.  I'm reading it now, but thought I'd post for others to see:

EDIT:  " third parties close to Michigan have begun testing the waters for potential replacements if he does decide to make a change in the athletic director's office."

I wonder if they mean MGoBlog???

DB had his chance to hire a coach. He screwed it up about as bad as can be. He has Michigan football teetering on the brink of being screwed for at least 10-15 years. He should not be given another chance. Fire him now.

Screwed for 10-15 years?  Hoke might not be the guy, but it's hard to argue with the quality and depth he's put together.  The next coach is going to have a lot to work with.  It's going to be much more like what Urban Meyer walked into than what Hoke (or RR, if you're so inclined) inherited.

David Brandon had his chance to support the head coach who was there and give him a fourth year to prove what he could do with upperclassmen, like he did Hoke.  Instead, he saddled Rich Rod with a terrible DC and used the same 7-6 record Hoke had last year to fire Rich Rod.

His bungling started literally as soon as he walked in the door.  If they keep David Brandon now, they are going to help Sparty continue to build a good program with recruits who would have gone to Michigan.

A few months ago, when the regents fired the first public warning shots across Brandon's bow, pouring cold water on his plans for fireworks shows at two football games, Schlissel deferred to the regents. A former Ivy League provost at Brown University, he said he didn't have a full understanding yet what athletics — and particularly football — truly meant at Michigan."But he does now," Bernstein said Thursday, laughing. "He does now."

In a way, I rather feel bad for Schlissel because this is how he gets to learn just how much football and the success of the program mean at Michigan in addition to its academic standing. That's probably not the training ground he would have liked, but it seems pretty clear after yesterday that the discontent is widespread and open at many levels, so hopefully between that and his hint at a "reset" of the culture, we might eventually see the change that is needed.

Schlissel was hired BECAUSE he is not an athletics person.  Mary Sue wanted to make sure that Dave was protected.  Schlissel wasn't going to mess with athletics until "concussion gate" happened.  As much as Dave is hated among the paying customers, he had all the support of the money bags.

Dave hired Hoke because he thinks he can control Brady.  However, the same personality traits that endears Brady to Dave are the same ones that make Hoke a bad football coach.  Hoke is not a process person; he doesn't see the big picture, and he may trust his assistants a little too much.

Schlissel has no loyalty towards DB. Why in the heck would he go out on a limb and retain a guy that is so poisonous that he could take anyone down with him.

Schlissel will get rid of him the first opportnity he can, which is the day after he gets a replacement he is happy with to commit to taking the job.

This way he endears himself to what he realizes is a HUGE percentage of his constituency and buys himself a few years to fix the mess DB has created.
