Delvon Roe done @ MSU (confirmed)
Don't have an article to confirm this yet, but a 4:30 press conference on Delvon Roe's injury status is rumored to announce his leaving of the MSU basketball team. He has been injured his entire career at MSU and it seems like he finally decided he can't continue to play through so much pain. This will be a blow to MSU next year because of his experience and leadership. They will have a very young team this year. I\ Best of luck to Delvon in his other endeavors outside basketball.
EDIT: It has been confirmed. Freep link, sorry.

I hate to see injuries derail a young career.

You wanna beat these guys on the floor, not because of injuries.

I feel sorry for Roe and wish him well, but I don't feel the least bit of sorrow or empathy for Sparty, nor do I think his absence will diminsh any victory over Sparty even an iota.
September 29th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
I agree. What I'm saying is I want to see Sparty's downfall as a result of our victory: not because of injuries. I want to get their best shot, no excuses, and send them packing.

I feel bad for the kid, but just like this week if Gray doesn't play I won't be upset beating sparty without Roe.

Even with Roe they have no chance again Michigan this year
September 29th, 2011 at 5:07 PM ^
I'll alert MSU that they don't need to bother showing up.

At least according to RCMB. I'll copy and paste the statement, but unfortunately the original poster didn't post the linky so I don't know where it came from:
UPDATE:
MSU Basketball Update: Knee Pain Forces Delvon Roe to Retire
MSU senior forward Delvon Roe has decided to end his career as an active member of the Spartan basketball team due to degenerative knee pain. Roe will remain on scholarship and is on track to graduate in May 2012.
Quote from Delvon Roe: “This is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. It feels that I’ve been playing through pain throughout my career at MSU, but the daily grind of basketball – the running, cutting, jumping – has finally taken its toll given the intensity required to play at our level. I started playing basketball because I loved the game, but the pain has taken that away and forced me to always think about just getting through the next few minutes or the next game. I don’t want to just ‘get through’ anymore. I’ve played on a leg and a half for most of my career, and that’s not fair to my teammates as they go through the daily grind.
“I have no regrets about my time at Michigan State. I’ve been blessed to be a three-year starter and be a part of back-to-back Big Ten Championships and Final Fours. I’m lucky to have been surrounded by great teammates that have become my brothers, and coaches that have provided great guidance. The medical and training staff have been phenomenal just to give me the opportunities that I’ve had. But as one of our doctors told me, the wear on my knee is like tread on a tire, and that once it’s gone, it doesn’t comeback. It became time to consider my health moving forward.
“I will always be a Spartan. The support of everyone in the University and the fan base has left an impression that will last a lifetime. It remains my goal to walk across the court on senior night.”
Quote from Tom Izzo: “We’ve built our program at Michigan State on toughness, and I’ve never had a player who played through more pain than Delvon. I feel bad for Delvon, because I know how much basketball means to him. It’s a shame that most Spartans never got to see the player I recruited. And yet he found a way to contribute and be a valuable part of two Final Fours and Big Ten Championships just by his will and desire. Last year, he unselfishly reinvented himself into a defensive stopper that the team needed. For him to call it a career at this time shows the severity of his pain. I look forward to having him remain around the program this year as he finishes his degree.”

I hate to see people leave sports because of injuries, regardless of what school they play for.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
How is this even remotely OT? It's our biggest rival in basketball losing An important piece.

September 29th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
Fixed. Wasn't sure if it was OT or not since it is football season.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:34 PM ^
does it being marked OT really detract so much from the story that you have to point it out? does it have to be changed before you read it. OT is the worst idea brian (or whoever decided it) had for this site
September 29th, 2011 at 7:23 PM ^
I don't know if this is the WORST IDEA EVER for the site, but it is unnecessary. The thread title should be informative enough to let the reader know it isn't about Michigan, and if a thread is decently titled, labeling it "OT" is redundant.
September 29th, 2011 at 7:40 PM ^
In a perfect world where all titled were perfectly informative, OT is unnecessary. But this isn't the world we live in. So if there is a thread ambiguously titled that is not about UM sports, I'd like to know so I don't click on it.
If OT is overused a little, no big deal. This thread title was very good, so it wasn't a problem. Underusing OT is the only time it's a problem.

Thats unfortunate. He had so much potential but the injuries kept weighing him down. Best of luck to him.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
I hate that it was through injury to somewhat even the odds on unexpected departures (ours being you-know-who), but I really, really, obsessively want to sweep them two straight years. I can't be too upset about anything that can helps that effort.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
I for one know what it's like to have injuries force you to give up activities that you have loved your whole life. Never wish that on anyone else. I wish him the best of luck, and hopefully he can keep his knees in good shape throughout the rest of his life.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:28 PM ^
Amazing he never missed a game and definitely seemed to be one of the stronger spirits on the court that the students rallied around, etc.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:30 PM ^
I remember when he was being recruited and what a big deal it was when State beat UNC for his commitment. It's bad enough if you're a gifted athlete and you don't fulfill your potential, its terrible when injuries don't even give you the chance to try. Best of luck to Delvon.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Delvon is a great guy. I know him professionally. He is, without a doubt, one of the nicest and toughest athletes I have ever met. He is just what you would want your child to develop into as a student athlete. It was a wise decision to limit the wear and tear on his knees, and hope for a pain reduced future.
TBT.

It seemed like he had the potential to be great.

but he looks like he has good stage presence.

I know he had a role in the upcoming movie "AWOL" that was shot here in Ann Arbor (and directed by a recent UMich alum, Danny Mooney). Excited to see what he does next.
September 29th, 2011 at 6:01 PM ^
Really a shame, I met him on the golf course last summer when he and his partner joined my group for a hole. He seemed like a really nice kid. Surprisingly good golfer for a 6'8" guy playing with standard sized clubs too.
September 29th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
Sad to see a career end because of injury....
But on a side note, i could never get over how much i think he looks like Julius from Remember the Titans...oh well
September 29th, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
Roe always seemed to have great potential, injuries just got the best of him. Really a prized recruit coming out of high school, looked like he could become a star. No matter who he plays for its tough to see it end like this.
September 29th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
He was the kind of player who gave everything he had despite the pain. I don't know how anyone could not respect a guy like that. Like Kerrigan at Purdue, I'm glad he's no longer playing, but I'd gladly stand and clap him off the court. Reminds me of Mike Martin.
September 29th, 2011 at 9:15 PM ^
Poor guy ... his early (that is, prior to his first knee trouble) clips in HS were amazing. Without injuries, he could've been an All-American player. He reminded me of a quicker and more talented Leon Powe (who, interestingly, has also had lots of knee problems). Seems like a good person, too ...
September 29th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
He was a tough SOB and despite his Spartiness, I respected the kid as a player. Too bad injuries ended not only his college career, but also what might have been his livlihood. Man, that sucks.
September 30th, 2011 at 10:32 AM ^
He seriously couldn't be a nicer kid. He had unbelievable potential, but he was never the same player after his knee injury in high school. I feel really bad for him, but knowing the kind of kid he is, he will still be successful in some other area in his professional life.
