Deadspin: Monitoring collegiate athletes' social media.

Submitted by Section 1 on

I sort of hate to give Deadspin any extra page-hits after they embarassed themselves by backing Michael Rosenberg's journalistic integrity in September of 2009 before, like, the subsequent months saw his journalistic integrity being regularly and routinely shredded.  I am just guessing that Tommy Craggs doesn't own an autographed copy of Three and Out.

But in a posting today, Deadspin follows up its earlier reporting on a phenomenon that might interest some of you.  (You, the guys who follow Twitter and Facebook so that I don't have to.  Thank you.)  It is pretty damn funny, when it isn't being pretty damn creepy.  And in fairness to the businesses that contract for these kinds of web-watching services, they wouldn't be needed if collegiate athletes didn't do such preposterously stupid stuff with the aid of their Twitter accounts.  (Naturally I am excepting Shane Morris, whose Twitter account is more valuable to the Michigan Athletic Departmant than David Brandon's Marquis Jet card.)

The MGoThread from Part One of the story a couple of months ago found here: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/some-universities-pay-companies-monitor-athletes-social-media

It's really too bad that some people can't put aside their neg-on-site goggles when legitimately interesting articles get posted. This one is actually a fabulous read.

We can't show you reports of our athletes' social media uses because that would violate their privacy.

Of course for us to GET THE DAMN REPORTS is legit....

"gay" = 3

"negro" = 3

"steroids" = 3

I wonder where "censorship" ranks?  And "Tibet" too for that matter.  Good grief.

I don't quite understand what Deadspin is supposed to be about.  For a long time I thought it was a humor site (didn't they create the "Fuck Lion" gif?), but then it seems to post serious content sometimes.

I get that these companies need a 15 year old to add to the list of offensive terms, but they shouldn't let the teenagers rank them in terms of offensiveness.  There should be at least one adult in that process who has more than two brain cells to rub together.
