DCC: Scott Shafer

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Runs same defense Durkin did here.

Coached under Harbaugh at Stanford.

Has lived here before.

Lunatics in the athletics administration during his last run are now completely gone.

Harbaugh is still here. Chris Partridge is still here. I think the Durkin loss will only affect us in Florida. I think Devin Bush Jr. is the only prospect to be worried about right now. It could have a small effect on some national recruits, but I doubt it. I am guessing any prospect who uses this as a reason to not come to Michigan probably wasn't going to end up here anyway.

Yep

Fangio has coached like 23 of 24 yrs in NFL - he is a NFL guy.  Was out of a job for 1 year and John recommended him to Jim at Stanford. Not going to NCAA unless he is out of work which based on is work at SF should be "never again". his reputation was much lower pre San Fran success.

Austin wants to be a hc in the nfl - downgr ading your self from DC in NFL to DC in NCAA is not the path.

Need to be reasonable.  And yes I get we got Jim from NFL but that was unique and guys like Fisch from NFL were out of work.  Not one of the most coveted DCs in the NFL.

He's not leaving. The Bears just cleaned house in the front office and coaching staff, that staff is getting minimum 3 years (unless someone leaves to take a better job, Gase could absolutely move on to HC in the near future), and he's probably getting paid pretty well since the Bears didn't go cheapo on the head coach this time around. Considering it's a new system and they don't have the right guys to run the defense they look surprisingly not completely incompetent at this point.

I just hope whoever they get is aggressive on D. I do not want to see Michigan's D revert back to "let's play ten yards off the receiver every play."

Syracuse defense is ranked below 100 in FEI - thats indiana level.

It gave up 45 to south florida, 44 to Virginia, 41 to Louisville, 42 to NC State....forget what it did vs Clemson and FSU.  Thats 3 yrs into the regime so he has no excuse about not having his guys.

his D only gave up less than 38 in conf twice all yr - to BCs 120th ranked offense and to Pitt.

I dont get the appeal.  And yes I know what harbaugh said about his mind.  I dont see the results.  And before you say it cant be done at 'cuse - Boston college in same conf had an excellent D this year, top 5 in country.

That Jordan Lewis leaves...doesn't want to have a 3rd DC in 3 years?

Not suggesting it...just trying to prepare myself for all collateral damage.

I dont see it. On an individual level, Shafer would be going backwards in his career by returning to UM. I can't see the upside for him. Seems like he would be better off taking a coordinator job in the NFL or another HC job at a smaller school.

Shafer was a one and done at Stanford and at Michigan. He's a good DC, but not a great one.

Durkin was great.

Dave Adolph is out of the question as he is retired.

I would not be surprised if there was an internal promotion. Much of the staff consists of top-tier guys on the rise or able to perform with higher responsibility, so handing out promotions seems somewhat reasonable if Harbaugh wants to keep his defensive staff around more long-ish term. Greg Jackson would be an obvious thought, so the coach in need would then be a LB's coach. JUST A THOUGHT.

What about that college coach that fell off his motorcycle on the road and fucked his face up pretty bad. I think his girlfriend was on the back? Anyways,we should try for him.
