DCC: Phil Parker
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:02 PM ^
Let’s just wait for Harbaugh to pick somebody, then we can go over the numbers.
December 23rd, 2020 at 6:23 PM ^
Wouldn't you rather throw at bunch of random Defensive Coordinator names at the wall, like spaghetti?
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:03 PM ^
He checks some boxes for sure, their defense is basically 'bend don't break,' which I suppose is good, and when they had one elite 5* recruit (Epenesa) they deployed him well and he appeared to reach his potential. So I suppose if we want someone who is clearly competent but doesn't have much else to offer then Parker would be a reasonable candidate. Maybe that's ok since defense doesn't win championships anymore anyway; maybe I'm shallow but Parker lacks panache. I prefer a younger coordinator who is a go-getter on the recruiting trail and on the sidelines.

Hell kick the tires and make Iowa give him a raise. I think he is only making $700,000 per. I would ask to interview just to fuck with Iowa.
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:49 PM ^
That's what Durkin was supposed to be...then he couldn't get out fast enough. I understand the sentiment but at this point I'd be good with someone older who knows what they're doing.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:07 PM ^
I believe Iowa also has a streak going to allowing 24 or less points in each of their last 22 games, which is fairly impressive. Big Ten West and horrible non conference schedule caveat does apply to this streak.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:13 PM ^
Yup you are correct--I just double checked bc I did not realize that. No games against OSU during that time (past two seasons) which matters, but they did clobber USC in the bowl game last season. And they have beaten ISU almost every year since Matt Campbell arrived in Ames, so there's that.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:32 PM ^
He did have a hand in being on the good side of 55-24 in 2017. I think they intercepted Barrett 5 times in that game.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:26 PM ^
The last time Iowa played OSU, he held them to their lowest point total of the season and Iowa won
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:42 PM ^
SQ points out that included ISU. Does not want Campbell
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:48 PM ^
A couple of those ISU games were played in monsoon like conditions. I believe the 2019 el assico took over 9 hours to complete due to all the weather delays.
But yes, Campbells inability to beat his biggest rival is a red flag.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:11 PM ^
On the flip side he has been around for the whole racism thing at Iowa. No thanks.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:19 PM ^
I'm not sure that was an issue that can be pinned on Parker. I'm not saying he's blameless but to my knowledge he wasn't personally accused by any current or former players of making racist comments or treating African American players poorly. He's known as a direct, old-school kind of football coach and I believe that he is well respected by his peers and by the players.

Finally, a DCC thread I don't hate.
IMO this would be a good choice, really going to have to throw a boat load of green to get him to leave Iowa though.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:22 PM ^
He makes $890K--if Michigan (Harbaugh) wants him I don't think money will be a barrier. However, who knows if Parker would leave a comfortable, semi-permanent gig for a job that is NOT an obvious promotion to work for a coach who may not be there more than one more year.

At almost 900k now he's their highest paid assistant coach. Works well with Ference and doesn't have to deal with the Michigan pressure.
I can't speak too his recruiting but he's developed some really good players.
He's a really good coach but at 57 I'm not sure they'll be much intensive to leave Iowa for UM.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:13 PM ^
He would be a great pick if it was possible, but he's been at Iowa for 21 years in some capacity. I have a feeling he's there to stay.
December 23rd, 2020 at 8:18 PM ^
He has been with Ferentz forever. We could dump a ton of cash on him but a guy his age with the longevity isn’t likely to go into an unsettled environment and give up what he knows.
Iowa has played good defense for quite some time.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:13 PM ^
Ok, I'm listening.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:31 PM ^
He's 57 which is older than I would like, however yes he would be an upgrade although I doubt he is leaving Iowa after so long. (ex-Sparty too)

December 23rd, 2020 at 3:54 PM ^
He seems like an non-designated coach-in-waiting at Iowa, probably waiting for Ferentz to have his Stoops retirement epiphany and figures he'd step right into the job.
December 23rd, 2020 at 2:32 PM ^
Isn't Derek Mason almost a lock for this position?
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
I sure hope so.
December 23rd, 2020 at 3:05 PM ^
His wife is named Sandy, which - I'm sorry - is unacceptable.
December 23rd, 2020 at 3:14 PM ^
Sorry, no olds
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:04 PM ^
He seems to be dialing it in. But I hope for better
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:10 PM ^
Iowa has performed pretty consistently as a whole and individual position groups for a while now. Good D-Line, Good secondary, Ok LB's. I think this is the formula for success in todays game.
Plus, it would be really fun witnessing Brian pull out all of his hair as Michigan plays the same cover 2 scheme game after game, season after season regardless of opponent. Never being blown out, never completely shutting anyone down.
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:11 PM ^
He’s the DC at Iowa in the same sense that Matt Patricia was the DC at New England. Has a titled, a playsheet, and a headset; the guy he works for is the brains of the operation.
December 23rd, 2020 at 4:44 PM ^
Pretty sure it’s Ferentz’s defense.
December 23rd, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
Don’t know about Phil, but I would be all for the legendary Dave Parker.
Pros:
1. 2nd. best defensive right fielder I have ever seen play.
2. I used to dread his presence in RF for the NL when rooting for the AL in the All-Star game.
3. Near Hall of Famer
4 Two-time World’s Champion
5 Ties to Ohio
6. NL MVP
7 Favorite sport was football
Slight Negative:
1 Has not been involved with competitive football since high school (actually maybe a positive after all - fresh perspective)
December 24th, 2020 at 9:07 AM ^
Pro: Bad-ass nickname
December 23rd, 2020 at 5:22 PM ^
Not a recruiter
December 24th, 2020 at 11:01 AM ^
The only way Norm Parker is coming to UM is if Harbaugh leaves and Ferentz is hired to replace him.
December 25th, 2020 at 12:46 AM ^
Like everything else at iowa, he's good but not remarkable. Nobody will ever say "damn, our defense kicked some serious ass today".....but we also probably wouldn't be crabbing about how they underperform, how really bad QBs torched us, or how our corners constantly hold.........
Can you say, okay I guess
