Phil Parker, the DC at Iowa appears to be a good candidate.

  • DC since 2013
  • Former DB coach
  • 57 yo
  • MSU alum
  • From Ohio
  • No clue about his recruiting prowess

DFEI national rankings:

  • 2020: 4
  • 2019: 7
  • 2018: 7
  • 2017: 12
  • 2016: 21
  • 2015: 26
  • 2014: 50
  • 2013: 11

He checks some boxes for sure, their defense is basically 'bend don't break,' which I suppose is good, and when they had one elite 5* recruit (Epenesa) they deployed him well and he appeared to reach his potential. So I suppose if we want someone who is clearly competent but doesn't have much else to offer then Parker would be a reasonable candidate. Maybe that's ok since defense doesn't win championships anymore anyway; maybe I'm shallow but Parker lacks panache. I prefer a younger coordinator who is a go-getter on the recruiting trail and on the sidelines.

I believe Iowa also has a streak going to allowing 24 or less points in each of their last 22 games, which is fairly impressive. Big Ten West and horrible non conference schedule caveat does apply to this streak.

Yup you are correct--I just double checked bc I did not realize that. No games against OSU during that time (past two seasons) which matters, but they did clobber USC in the bowl game last season. And they have beaten ISU almost every year since Matt Campbell arrived in Ames, so there's that.

I'm not sure that was an issue that can be pinned on Parker. I'm not saying he's blameless but to my knowledge he wasn't personally accused by any current or former players of making racist comments or treating African American players poorly. He's known as a direct, old-school kind of football coach and I believe that he is well respected by his peers and by the players.

Iowa has performed pretty consistently as a whole and individual position groups for a while now. Good D-Line, Good secondary, Ok LB's. I think this is the formula for success in todays game.

Plus, it would be really fun witnessing Brian pull out all of his hair as Michigan plays the same cover 2 scheme game after game, season after season regardless of opponent. Never being blown out, never completely shutting anyone down.

He’s the DC at Iowa in the same sense that Matt Patricia was the DC at New England. Has a titled, a playsheet, and a headset; the guy he works for is the brains of the operation.

Don’t know about Phil, but I would be all for the legendary Dave Parker.
Pros:

1. 2nd. best defensive right fielder I have ever seen play.
2. I used to dread his presence in RF for the NL when rooting for the AL in the All-Star game.
3. Near Hall of Famer

4  Two-time World’s Champion

5  Ties to Ohio

6. NL MVP

7  Favorite sport was football

Slight Negative:

1  Has not been involved with competitive football since high school (actually maybe a positive after all - fresh perspective)

Like everything else at iowa, he's good but not remarkable.  Nobody will ever say "damn, our defense kicked some serious ass today".....but we also probably wouldn't be crabbing about how they underperform, how really bad QBs torched us, or how our corners constantly hold.........

Can you say, okay I guess
