On This Day 22 Years Ago: Woodson's Punt Return
On Nov. 22nd, 1997 Charles Woodson solidified his Heisman in part due to his famous punt return vs. OSU. Hard to believe it has been 22 years since that game (I feel old).
Tomorrow will also mark the 28(!!) year anniversary of Desmond Howard's punt return vs. OSU.
You can watch both videos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQy2ohW9OaI
Hopefully, DPJ can add to the highlight real by ripping off a punt return of his own against a team in red. I would prefer that be against OSU, but I refuse to overlook Indiana and would gladly take a punt return them as well.

Love it. But I'd really love for Michigan to create some new iconic moments in this rivalry in 8 days. Every time there's promos for the game or pump-up videos, Michigan's moments unfortunately are always the same ones from 16 plus years ago minimum.

Yep. Our two most recent wins are 2011 and 2003. We are due. But I'd love some highlights of victories over OSU in HD lol. Only so many times I can watch Denard, Navarre to Edwards, Henson's bootleg, Woodson's punt return etc etc

We won in 16. Still bitter.

Also: 33 years ago today, November 22, 1986, Jim Harbaugh kept his promise that Michigan would beat OSU in Columbus for the Rose Bowl birth.

Nice catch and thanks for uploading the videos I shared. I watch them quite a bit in November each year, as well as many of your other videos.

What you meant was Rose Bowl berth.
A Rose Bowl birth would be interesting and noteworthy, but not likely related to any of the players and not likely it has ever happened.

immaculate bowl-selection conception?

That's what it's called when Notre Dame makes the playoff.

I'm tired, soooo tired of the grammar police on this site. It's Ridiculous. But it;s in every thread. Barth, Berth, Birth, Borth, Burth, Just communicate and don"t nit pick every English grammar error, this is not a test, it's a blog. Stand up and pull out the wedgie.

Why did you capitalize "Ridiculous" in the second sentence? Is it a person NAMED Ridiculous you're referencing here???

November 22nd is a very memorable day for me.
1963- As a first grader, all of the teachers at my school are crying and we are sent home early as JFK is assassinated.
1989- My Mom passes away from a long battle with cancer. A die-hard Meeechigan fan, she always had the Ufer broadcasts on each and every Saturday. The reason I became a Meeechigan fan. RIP Mom.
1997- Watching The Game from section 32 (north endzone) as Charles returns the punt for a TD. A great, big, beautiful Meeechigan victory I will never forget.
GO BLUE ? ?

Also on this day in 1963 , Roger Sterling’s daughter Margaret , has her wedding overshadowed by the JFK assassination

It is crazy how fast Desmond got to top end speed.

He ran so violently - loved his cuts. Also interesting how similar the two returns are in the way they pan out.

I was there for the Woodson return. Never screamed so loud in my life. He also had an interception right in front of us. He was certainly the difference that day.
November 22nd, 2019 at 11:37 AM ^
We lose that game without Woodson.
November 22nd, 2019 at 11:53 AM ^
Yes we do, he was the difference. Was all season in 1997. That's why he was voted the # 6 college football player of all time by ESPN.

The student section turned into a giant mosh pit during/after that return. I ended up a couple rows below where I was sitting when everything finally subsided.

The Game needs to be moved back to the weekend before Thanksgiving. We haven't had a lot of luck the weekend after.

Aw man, this takes me back.
1997 was my freshman year, and I was fortunate enough to have gotten tickets with a bunch of upperclassmen. Not sure if they still do it, but seats were assigned based on the highest seniority in the group, so we had row 18 seats that year (I've never had better seats since).
That return was so awesome and the end of the game was even better. We were one of the first groups of people on the field. I took two chunks of sod from Michigan Stadium (both of which crumbled into oblivion a few weeks later - WTF was I thinking?) to commemorate the season.
Woodson with the rose clenched in his jaw; getting an $80 student ticket to the Rose Bowl; spending New Years in Pasadena.
I could have, and still will, die happy as a result of what happened on Nov. 22, 1997.
Oh, and fuck David Boston.

It's crazy that going up 14-0 in 1997 was a knockout blow. But in today's game that is barely a lead.
November 22nd, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
I don't think it would be particularly easy to come back on Michigan 2015-2019 if they got out 14-0 on somebody.
November 22nd, 2019 at 2:29 PM ^
didn't we kind of do that in 2017?
November 22nd, 2019 at 5:26 PM ^
Hopefully we'll get a new memory this year
