On This Day 22 Years Ago: Woodson's Punt Return

Submitted by Mercury Hayes on November 22nd, 2019 at 10:33 AM

On Nov. 22nd, 1997 Charles Woodson solidified his Heisman in part due to his famous punt return vs. OSU. Hard to believe it has been 22 years since that game (I feel old).

Tomorrow will also mark the 28(!!) year anniversary of Desmond Howard's punt return vs. OSU.

You can watch both videos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQy2ohW9OaI

Hopefully, DPJ can add to the highlight real by ripping off a punt return of his own against a team in red. I would prefer that be against OSU, but I refuse to overlook Indiana and would gladly take a punt return them as well.

Love it.  But I'd really love for Michigan to create some new iconic moments in this rivalry in 8 days.   Every time there's promos for the game or pump-up videos, Michigan's moments unfortunately are always the same ones from 16 plus years ago minimum.

November 22nd is a very memorable day for me.

1963- As a first grader, all of the teachers at my school are crying and we are sent home early as JFK is assassinated.

1989- My Mom passes away from a long battle with cancer. A die-hard Meeechigan fan, she always had the Ufer broadcasts on each and every Saturday. The reason I became a Meeechigan fan. RIP Mom.

1997- Watching The Game from section 32 (north endzone) as Charles returns the punt for a TD. A great, big, beautiful Meeechigan victory I will never forget.

GO BLUE ? ?

I was there for the Woodson return. Never screamed so loud in my life. He also had an interception right in front of us.  He was certainly the difference that day.

Aw man, this takes me back.

1997 was my freshman year, and I was fortunate enough to have gotten tickets with a bunch of upperclassmen. Not sure if they still do it, but seats were assigned based on the highest seniority in the group, so we had row 18 seats that year (I've never had better seats since).

That return was so awesome and the end of the game was even better. We were one of the first groups of people on the field. I took two chunks of sod from Michigan Stadium (both of which crumbled into oblivion a few weeks later - WTF was I thinking?) to commemorate the season.

Woodson with the rose clenched in his jaw; getting an $80 student ticket to the Rose Bowl; spending New Years in Pasadena.

I could have, and still will, die happy as a result of what happened on Nov. 22, 1997.

Oh, and fuck David Boston.
