Daily article on Brady Hoke's first job

Submitted by CaptainBlue on

Thought I'd share this link sometime this morning. Doesn't mention Hoke's San Diego State ties, but some pretty stirring stuff about Hoke as a player and a young coach at a small town in Indiana.

YORKTOWN, Ind. — Dave Tanner drove his light blue Volkswagen Bug just down the road, past the corn stalks and past the homes of all his players and boosters. Past the big white water tower with “YORKTOWN” in green lettering, with a tiger painted on the side.

He was on his way to interview Brady Hoke. He hoped Brady could teach his linebackers how to make the perfect fundamental tackle, but also join him in building a football family.

Also some tremendous information on Marcus Ray and Glen Steele and how Hoke fathered them. This guy seems like our kind of coach, shades of Bo.

I think Hoke has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.

The story is definitely a great piece on what kind of person Hoke is.

Beyond that, look at all those coaching contacts Hoke has in Ohio.  Ball State guys, Michigan guys, etc that went on to coach in high school.  That's going to provide amazing support for recruiting pipelines.

Man that idea had bad idea written all over it.  My mom never once inspired me into a killing rage that led me to fly in on a safety blitz and murder the quarterback.  My mom was the one up in the stands closing her eyes and convinced her baby boy was going to be killed by the big old guard.

I love my mom and all, but I wanted to be inspired to hit stuff for 60 minutes, I talked listen to grandpa's war stories or AC/DC.

This is a cool article, but it seems to be all over the place.  I found myself having to go back and read paragraphs twice because I kept getting confused as to how some sections tied in to the article, and there was so much jumping around.  I kind of think that the Daily is getting a little full of itself with these big feature articles.

Teriffic article, particularly the emphasis on 'what does your name mean to you,' and how its led Coach Hoke down the coaching trail that would wind him up at Michigan under Coaches Schem, Moeller and Carr that preached the same philosophy of the name you carry being bigger than yourself.

The part about Marcus Ray was especially interesting because I didn't know all of those things about him and he graduated high school 2 years prior to my freshman year from the cross-town rival (Eastmoor - Archie's alma matter) of the high school for whom I played 4 years of prep-football (Walnut Ridge).

OT - Marcus Rays childhood friend Anthony Gwinn (who lettered a couple years for tsio in that era, and got the worse end of their childhood misbehavings by spending significant federal time for his mistakes in college) has been very candid with me about all the intricate details regarding the effective 'payroll' the football players have been on for the past couple decades, or longer. I happened to meet him ironically in the spring when things were going from bad to worse here in C-bus. It's hilarious knowing what I know, and listening to Demetrius Stanley on the radio, who knows it all the more intimately, hold back. To his credit though, he has been very honest sonce the season has started that this is an 8-4 team in Ohio this year, at best.
