Crystal balls trending for Garrett Dellinger to LSU

Submitted by Magnus on March 19th, 2020 at 5:33 PM

Clarkston (MI) Clarkston offensive tackle Garrett Dellinger had a run of nine crystal balls come in today for him to pick LSU. I did a piece on Dellinger back in February (LINK) and found his junior film much more impressive than his sophomore film. This run includes Allen Trieu, who is 27/27 for the 2021 class, and Steve Wiltfong, who is 64/65. Still, I think his teammate Rocco Spindler is a better player.

At one time Dellinger was considered to be a Notre Dame lean.

On the flip side, buzz is building about New Trier (IL) New Trier offensive tackle David Davidkov pledging to Michigan. He's a 4-star and #144 overall.

Free cash and no need to pretend you care about school. That’s appealing to a lot of high school kids.

The 2021 had me so optimistic based on the in-state talent and JJ McCarthy and Giovanni El Hadi committing so early, but now I'm getting less and less optimistic, especially with how crazily OSU is recruiting

My biggest fear exactly... Ohio State lands treyveon Henderson and Evan Pryor... And then Donovan Edwards doesn't even go to Ohio State OR Michigan. He ends up at Georgia or God forbid Sparty. This is a legitimate concern. Oh wait at least we have Corey kiner. oops Louisville gets him. Oh well we got our other guy AJ Green...uh Oh SpaghettiOs he goes to Oklahoma to play cornerback. I know I'm being negative but this is all a legitimate concern.

I understand the whole sparty thing sounds ridiculous... But with Ron Bellamy being his head coach it makes me question a lot of things like why isn't this one in the bag? I really begin to suspect that old Coach Bo schembechler was right when he said there's termites in the walls... Despite what I said I'm not really being critical of harbaugh about recruiting. He got Zach charbonnet he got Blake corum and hopefully he gets Donovan Edwards. If Edwards ends up somewhere not Ohio State and not Michigan I wouldn't be shocked! I'm not a troll and yes I'm being negative but also realistic... And maybe it is the Jack Daniel's talking ?

You don't have to have a mocking tone on "in the bag". And nobody said he was a mindless fool you don't have to jump to an extreme in language. I guess I just don't like the fact that I see Michigan State even being mentioned by this kid. I don't know anything about Ron Bellamy personally so I'm not accusing him but I do see a lot of EX Michigan players who are high-profile ex Michigan players who s*** talk whatever current coaching staff we have. It is as if Michigan's culture produces arrogance... It's like we have so many high-profile ex-players who "love" Michigan so much that they hate Michigan (in practice).

Ohio State is a top 5 program nationally right now. They’ve won multiple conference titles in recent seasons, been to the playoffs multiple times and have a CFP title. Meanwhile, Michigan hasn’t won a conference title since 2004. These recruits were like 2 years old. That’s why it’s not “in the bag.” Michigan, while having the benefit of being in-state, is still going up against ELITE teams for ELITE players. Programs that can point to their trophy cases and show multiple conference and national titles that Michigan simply doesn’t have, in large part to the RR/Hoke downturn.

Not to mention the fact that it’s March. Kids don’t always want to end their recruiting process before it really gets started. He hasn’t been able to take any of his official visits. They still (depending on CoVid19) have the summer camp circuit. The EARLIEST he can sign is December. 9 months from now. There’s no rush to commit, even if he’s 110% certain where he’s going. Let the kid enjoy the process. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. Michigan could have this one in the bag for all we know, and he’s just riding out the process.

Why can't we have nice things?  In all seriousness how does that happen without a visit from either party to the other?  How can a phone call or text message be that convincing?

LSU just won a national championship, looking like a once in a decade team. They pay players and they don’t give a shit about anything besides winning games and getting the kids ready for the nfl.

What about that premise makes you think Michigan is going to land kids who want to go somewhere like that? It takes a special kid to be an elite athlete and pick Michigan over the LSU, OSU, and Alabama type schools.

The weather in Louisiana frequently sucks.  The whole state is crap, and Baton Rouge is nothing special as a college town.  I have to go there for work with some frequency.  It’s like Texas’ ass end.

If you’re going “for the weather,” you could do a lot better than LSU.  They are really good at football, but that’s about it.

Ugh, 3 months out of the year it's hotter than hell and humid. Then there are the snakes.

LSU as a football program is great, and has had a ton of success. There are lots of reasons to go there, but I don't think the weather is a slam dunk one. Holy Crap not everyone is cut out for the deep South. Practicing in July and August in high heat and humidity sucks.

Magnus - I respect all you do but, you can't tell me that missing out on any of the top state talent doesn't  concern you? How many of the top players in ohio does sou not get (if they want them)!! They just signed in the last week 2 top 75 players and another 1 in the top 150. What did we get?? We extended offered to top 1000 players. They have 9 signees in the top 100 and 2 more in the top 150... We are never going to beat them with the disparity in recruiting....

a) Ohio State hasn't signed anyone in the last week.

b) Virtually every team that has beaten Ohio State in the last decade or two has had a talent disparity, including PSU, Purdue, MSU, etc.

c) Ohio State has an inherent advantage - which has always existed - of being the only big-time school in its state.

d) Missing out on Dellinger does not significantly concern me, no. Michigan has offered a lot of prospects within the state for 2021, and they can't take all of them. There's not enough room in the class, especially on the offensive line.

Exactly.  This is maybe the strongest year in awhile. We aren't going to get everyone in the state but if you look at OSU and LSU as examples, they usually get 85 to 90% of the kids they go after HARD in their talent-rich states. And that speaks volumes - especially for LSU - who has the neighboring southern powers constantly recruiting in that state.

This might not be a popular statement, but this is the crunch year - both in recruiting and on the field - for JH

This is an unfair comparison. LSU and OSU are the only Power 5 schools in their state. Kids grow up with an affinity for staying in state and bringing some pride, not to mention receiving pressure from others to do so.

If you grow up in Michigan and you're an MSU fan, there's going to be a certain part of you that wants to go out of state if MSU isn't performing up to the level you want. If I were an elite recruit who was a fan of MSU, I still probably wouldn't want to go to MSU right now because they're in a crap-ton of trouble and have been losing lately. So do I go to "The Enemy" (Michigan) or just go out of state to Georgia or Notre Dame?

The closest comparisons Michigan is facing within the state (two Power 5 schools) is something like South Carolina (Clemson/South Carolina), Pennsylvania (Penn State/Pitt), or Alabama (Alabama/Auburn). Those aren't perfect comparisons, but you can see the issue.

In the State of Alabama, the #3 and #4 players are committed to Auburn, #6 is committed to Alabama, and three other top-25 players within the state are committed to Tennessee.

The #2 player in South Carolina is committed to Florida, and #12 is committed to Virginia Tech. Nobody else in the top 20 has committed yet.

Of the top 13 players in Pennsylvania, Pitt has commitments from 2 and Penn State has 0. (Others are committed to Ohio State and Clemson.)

So Michigan is actually doing better within its own state than Penn State, Clemson, and Alabama are doing within their own state lines.

I totally agree we're never going to get the recruits like LSU and OSU do in their home states but I am hoping to maybe get at least 50 to 60% this year considering what's happening to Moo U in E. Lansing. We're really going to have to work hard now - considering the recruiting projections in the last couple of weeks - to get to that figure......and spin it anyway you want, there's no excuse for that.

There's even recent talk that if OSU gets both Pryor and Henderson, Edwards could look real hard at Georgia and that is BS......enough said, I'll leave it go there.

Note: Michigan can't possibly take all the offensive linemen that are/have been projected to go to Michigan.

The in-state recruiting class alone has Spindler, Dellinger, Rayshaun Benny, Raheem Anderson, Giovanni El-Hadi, Caleb Tiernan, Caleb Banks, and Davion Weatherspoon. That's 8 in-state linemen with offers, and that doesn't include guys like Davidkov, Nolan Rucci, etc.

So I wouldn't overreact to this news. Of course, it's also not signing day yet, so a run of crystal balls doesn't mean all is said and done.

Lorenz has said on 247 that it seems like Caleb Tiernan has been the staff's preference for a while, at least at tackle.  He was an ND lean previuosly, so this isn't a huge deal.

El Hadi and Davidkov would give the class two Top100 tackles, and Michigan looks good for several other players.  It's going to be a very good OL class, we can have very nice things.  As nice as OSU?  No.  And no one should expect that until Michigan scratches out a win against them.

Didn’t Alan Trieu CB Edwards to OSU? That seems unlikely now. Even if he gets this one right, there’s still no cause for concern. OL recruiting is solid to say the least, we have an elite QB recruit, probably going to get Edwards who is arguably the best back in the country, and we are in it for one of the best TE’s in the country...possibly leading. I’m not worried about the Defense because they will always be good.

What osu is doing right now is pretty amazing, but they still take the field with 11 guys and our starters, talent wise, will be just as good, or at least close to theirs. I’m pretty happy with recruiting, but it would be nice to get a commitment soon.
