Could it get worse? Saddi and Yak are highly poachable.

Rather than worry about our assistants' futures, I'd think they are considered prime targets by a lot of top programs given their well-documented roles in shaping this program, its schemes and its players. As I have tried to begin to think optimistically about a new head coach, I am equally bummed that we could lose two more important cogs in our recent success.

We forget these are real people who  have families just like us. They have to look out for themselves when this sort of thing happens.

A friend just stopped by who is a counselor in the local high school. He said a daughter of an assistant was taking it pretty hard because she found out in class like everyone else did this morning. The kids don't like moving around constantly.

Exactly.   He's probably the least risky hire outside of Jay Wright or Tony Bennett and he has a higher ceiling than anyone on the tier below them.

UC - freaking - LA just settled for Mick Cronin.  Let's not blow it up to hire a C-list guy.  You have a budding star right under your nose, Warde.

Our defense was elite because of him... we landed many elite recruits because of him... he is still close to the high school circuit....  there wouldnt be a better hire than him.

He is either the HC, or hes gone.. he wont stay for another HC.

Is this based on any info or just a gut feeling? I feel like any offensive-focused coach would love to have Yak as a defensive coordinator. And if the situation was similar to what Yak had with Coach B, why would he need to bolt? Obviously if he's up for a big HC gig he'd want to go, but if that's the case he'd be gone within the next year either way. It's not like him and Coach B. were old pals.

Chris Beard was coaching D2 ball 4 years ago. If Yak is the guy you want in the program for the next 10 years, you give him the HC job and do everything you can to help build with him. Because he's probably at the point where he's getting the HC job, or he's probably leaving. Because someone will hire him.

Chris Beard was a head coach in D-2, Yacklich was last a head coach in high school. He also was a TT assistant for a decade from 2001-2011 serving as associate head coach before leaving to get more head coaching experience.

On top of that TT isn't a desirable a job so they have to take more risks, sometimes that works out but more often it doesn't. It just isn't a comparable situation.

I am sorry for thread hijacking but I read this quote in a separate thread below from an ESPN article.

Beilein has run model programs in college, free of scandal and impropriety. In recent years, he has become increasingly frustrated with the nature of college basketball recruiting and the retention of top players. The impending loss of Michigan freshman Ignas Brazdeikis along with senior Charles Matthews and sophomore Jordan Poole to the NBA draft dented what might have been a national championship contender.

I know the frustration over the 2013 season played a part in Beilein's decision. As far as I am concerned, Michigan was the 2013 national champions!

Thanks Coach!

I would definitely assume Yak and Saddi to be gone with a coaching transition. Whoever Warde hires should be allowed/encouraged to bring in whatever assistants he feels are best for the program moving forward.

Definitely one of the most depressing parts of this transition will be losing Yaklich as an assistant. His work on our defense was transformative to the program.

If they leave, they leave. Giving Warde the chance to hire his own guy and allow that guy to bring in his own assistants.

Michigan is not a blue-blood, but its a darn good program and one of the premiere jobs in its own conference. Beilein left this program in far, far better shape than he did when he found it. I'd like to think we won't have too much trouble finding a successor to carry on that success. Its possible that the next guy up takes Michigan to the lone height that Beilein could not achieve.

Michigan is closer to a blue blood basketball program than OSU, if they can make a splash hire then we certainly can as well.   The biggest difference is Beilein went out after making another good run in March while Matta left a program that was in shambles.   We will make a splash hire, that coach will bring both assistants and recruits to UM and we will be fine.

We might not be able to manage both a superb hire AND keeping the staff intact, but if we can manage one of these things, then I would be at least comforted far more than I would be by further departures.

Agreed, but If given a choice I’d go for the superb hire.   Back the money truck up to the coaches office at Texas Tech and keep bringing more trucks until you get a yes.  I didn’t follow them closely but in the Tourney they seemed to play a very similar style,  elite D but they had better shooting on the perimeter.

One of them needs to take over. Preferably Yaklich. Don't bring in some idiot for name recognition whose gonna set us back years both in terms of competitiveness and class.
