Coastal Carolina PG DeVante Jones highlight video

Submitted by Double-D on April 25th, 2021 at 1:22 PM

It sounds like UofM is a player in his recruitment if he doesn’t go pro.  Juwan had a zoom call with him yesterday.

His highlight video is fun to watch.  He is super quick and 3 steals a game.  One was reminiscent of Trey Burke picking off Appling.

This looks like a great addition if Juwan can pull it off.

He's an excellent player for sure.  I just wonder if there'd be enough minutes for him here to make it worth his while.  Also, great players like Collins and Bufkin aren't coming here to sit on the bench.

Sure, but you are assuming that the younger guys are just going to come into the Big Ten and dominate.

Jones has played multiple years of college basketball; he would have a much easier time adjusting to the grind of league play than the kids will.

Collins and Bufkin, at least as of now, are twigs compared to Devante. Jones is a rock.

Looks like a guy with some skills that will translate regardless of competition level. He’s a confident shooter who can hit threes off the dribble and drive the lane. If they can sell him on a role putting in minutes at the point and at the two and showcase himself against top competitors I think he’ll do a lot for his draft stock. Assume this will come down to if he wants a prime starting roll vs a role player? I’m hopeful our young guys will be ready for action by mid-season so doubt there’s a guaranteed start here for him all season

If DeVante comes he will predominantly play the point, he will be the prime starter and he will play around 30 minutes per. Juwan's goals include putting this team in position to win championships. Collins and Bufkin would have the great opportunity of practicing against Brooks and Jones.

He’s got a nice shot and quick hands.  The competition is horrible in some of those clips, however.  I suspect he will struggle with scoring while going to the basket at higher levels of competition— but a pg with experience who can shoot 3s and defend is very valuable.

But that’s just it. Mike Smith is the exception that proves the rule. We were extremely fortunate that he and Chaundee Brown worked out as well as they did.

That said, Jones appears to have some skills that are going to translate no matter where he plays. If you can hit 45% of your threes, where at least a significant chunk of them are of the step-back, off the bounce variety, that is an opponent-invariant skill. Based on previous chatter and this highlight film, that’s a player I would love to have.

He might have to choose whether he wants to score 21 points and 4 assists a game for a mediocre team, or 15 and 5 for national title contender.

If someone is good in the Sun Belt, they'll be (likely) good anywhere. For the most part, college basketball is relatively flat. That is why March Madness is as ridiculous as it is.

If a running back transferred from a D2 school to Alabama, I would expect that RB to get bulldozed in the SEC.

Your second paragraph is spot on. His skills will translate anywhere. He's a grown man who has been through the challenges of college basketball.

2 thoughts about going aggressively after Jones:

1. A player already hinted at leaving

2. it’s all about getting the championship and acquiring the talent to do so, even if it is at the expense of someone

He is fun to watch in that highlight video, but c'mon, one of those games was against Alice Lloyd (5:04 mark). And I think they only beat Bursley by 3.
