Class of yesterday’s starters including kickers

Submitted by Go for two on November 22nd, 2020 at 5:06 PM
After seeing three freshmen in the starting OL, I was curious to see the starting lineups class. 12 sophomores (skilled players on offense and most of the defense). 6 juniors and three seniors (TE, kicker and safety). This year has been very tough, but with 21 starters hopefully returning, we should be much better next year.

I would've, especially in hindsight!

Give Hoke a "lame duck" season,

Harbaugh doesn't have to bolt outta SF and rush in but starts recruiting from the set of College Gameday during the bowl season and into the start of Hoke's last year, all the while recruits can get at* ease with upcoming transition.

Then Hoke can leave a savior who just couldn't "over the top" the program, so we brought in the Closer (start brewing coffee bitches!). Hoke strong arms the HC job at Western Michigan after PJ leaves and we stash all the talent that would go to MSU or Wis but can't quite make the cut.

UofM is ranked #3 and Western is #6

Can't say it wasn't possible.

Due to eligibility not counting this season, we could see every starter returning in theory. Though, so would everyone else in the country

Depending on how you counted starters (typical starter vs who started yesterday) we probably won’t see all starters come back. Don’t expect guys like Mayfield, Paye, or Hutchinson to come back. McGrone would probably be best served to come back, but isn’t out of the question to leave either.

Others have noted that since this is a free year for eligibility, all players could come back next year.

However, it does appear that the team is younger than average, so if there isn't some mass exodus to the transfer portal, we'll be one year more experienced next year. So there's a chance that they collectively show their talent better next year. It isn't going to be enough to compete with OSU and Wisconsin, probably, but it might be enough to at least be back to being in the mix for 2nd in the B1G East, instead of barely staying out of last place.

What is the problem with our field goal kickers? Moody was 0-3 against Minnesota and Nordin went 0-3 last night.  That’s ridiculous.  Are they doing well in practice only to choke on game day, or are they inaccurate all the time?  Are the long snapper and/or holder doing something wrong?

I don't think he's a bad coach. That's extreme.

I do think he's done a bad job in key areas. And that's not defendable beyond the hope he knows it and gets those items corrected.

But the idea of him keeping his job is very defendable. Way more goes into that decision than the high-tempered embarrassment  feelings of the fan base.  Or even a very bad stretch on the field. Guy has a .700 winning percentage and he's developed a large number of NFL players. He has a very high APR and the players are solid, productive members of the community.

Sacking him blows up recruiting and will mean another new direction pivot that will take 4 plus years to iron out.

There are a lot more positives or neutral items in this current situation than gets brought up when things are ugly on the field.  Things folks on message boards who are deeply emotionally invested choose not to see.

I think he deserves to get shown the door in a lot of ways. But in a lot of ways it would be foolish. I believe he'll fix this. The passion is there IMO. I believe he'll find the right tools.

And I get people saying he won't fix it and it's time to change.

The extra experience will definitely help. If the coaches still can't / won't put together a comprehendable game plan and effectively scout their opponent we are in for yet another season of disappointment.

Problem with this is even with young players this team is severely underperforming. Even if they take a step forward next year that could still be a very disappointing year. This isn't a struggling but promising 8-4 type team. They could be much improved and be 8-4 next year. Also, part of why they're young is Harbaugh's mismanagement. We should have an RS Jr starting at QB.
