Class of 2019 Redshirt status
So, we are four games in, and I was curious who of the freshman has played in their allotted four games already. I pulled all my information from mgoblue.com. If you have any information that disputes, please share.
*George Johnson and Quintel Kent are both injured and will redshirt. Kent may be a medical retirement.
Played in four games: Dax Hill, Cornelius Johnson, Giles Jackson, Mike Sainristil, Zach Charbonnet, Erick All
Played in three games: Anthony Solomon, DJ Turner, Chris Hinton
Played in two games: Karsen Barnhart
Played in one game: Charles Thomas
Have yet to appear: Jalen Perry, Joey Velazquez, Cade McNamara, Quinten Johnson, Trente Jones, Nolan Rumler, Zach Carpenter, Mazi Smith, Jack Stewart, David Ojabo, Trevor Keegan, Mike Morris, Gabe Newburg
If I missed anyone please let me know. There are a few names I’m surprised to see haven’t played yet, Joey Velazquez being one. Thought for sure he would play on Special Teams. I’ve only seen Anthony Solomon on Special Teams; will we burn his redshirt just for that? I will say everyone who has played in four games so far is contributing and will for sure be playing the rest of the season. Love to hear everyone else’s thoughts.

Not to thread jack, but it looks like Connor Heyward put his name into the transfer portal. Not good for Sparty.
September 30th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
That looks like a case of moving down a few spots on the depth chart.
September 30th, 2019 at 5:29 PM ^
It’s actually great for Sparty. Mork kept giving him the ball even though he was a good 20 lbs overweight.
September 30th, 2019 at 8:50 PM ^
He has been passed over by 2 younger players. He wants to play. MSU has moved on from him. And now he is moving on from MSU.

Please stop with the derisive attitude toward special teams. You're not the only one, but it still rankles to see it, whenever I see it. How many games have been decided by special teams? Countless games. Plenty of games against Ohio State, Michigan State, and Notre Dame decided by special teams. They're vital.
If I'm reading the stat lines right, Michigan's already had over 100 special teams plays this year. That's not insignificant for a true freshman, getting experience at the college football level.
Solomon playing special teams is a natural progression into playing offense or defense. Let's not knock it.

Found the person who was on special teams in high school

Maybe you should just go be the basketball guy. Sheesh!!!

Charles Woodson and our most recent National Championship trophy would both like a word with anyone discounting the importance of special teams play.
September 30th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
Charles Woodson never covered a kickoff.

The same people also bitch about starters playing teams.

You can go back to the FSU bowl game a couple of years ago when Jordan Glasgow missed the tackle on the kickoff after we had just taken the lead, cost us the game. Yes, special teams do matter, it is just that in most instances, they play in obscurity with their effectiveness mostly known only to the coaches after evaluating game film.

Ok so let's do some math. Michigan has had 100 special teams plays this year, and we're 4 games in. Let's say we keep pace, and have 300 special teams plays over the duration of the regular season. Pretty solid. So if we burn his redshirt, we basically have an extra 200 plays for Anthony Solomon. And that's assuming that he plays every single special team.
Now let's say we keep his redshirt. The median college football game lasts 74 plays offensively. So let's assume that Michigan's defense is on the field for 74 plays a game. If Solomon is a starter, that means he's probably on the field for most of the 888 plays that that would average out to. Is getting a little extra "seasoning" really worth potentially losing what would amount to 688 plays of starter worthy football? Fuck no. Do not burn redshirts for special teams, ever.

Quinten Johnson is the injured one, not George.
Also we may see someone like Velazquez play ST the next 4 games in place of Solomon. Get both their 4 games on ST but save the RS.

I'm interested by this idea. Rotating the freshman who have zero chance at being on the two deep this season thru special teams so that none of them get a fifth game seems like a viable strategy.

I like that a lot. A great way to get game experience. I approve of this.

I was hoping Cade McNamara would get some snaps at the end of the Rutgers game. Curious to see his arm and football IQ given Bama had him at the top of their board.
September 30th, 2019 at 5:53 PM ^
outside of Tua, I wouldnt say bama is known for elite qb talent
September 30th, 2019 at 5:57 PM ^
Ummmmm, Jalen Hurts ring a bell?
September 30th, 2019 at 7:20 PM ^
AJ McCarron is still in the NFL
September 30th, 2019 at 5:59 PM ^
Uh they are now. Tua’s brother and that Young kid are both pretty damn good

What is with the fascination with redshirts? Other than injury, no one that relevant is staying for five years. There is a current player who is the object of much board ire that is pretty indicative of what you get out of fifth year seniors.

Consensus All-American Fifth-Year Senior Mo Hurst would like to have a word

winovich ?

Jon Runyan
Michigan's teams aren't built on 5th year seniors, but they've played an important role.
October 1st, 2019 at 6:20 AM ^
5th yr senior heavy contributors since 2014 off the top of my head, not counting grad transfers: Gardner, Patterson, Isaac, K Hill, Poggi, AJ Williams, G Glasgow, JBB, Runyan, R Glasgow, Hurst, Godin, Winovich, Wormley?, McCray, Clark?, Watson. “Important roles” indeed.
4th year seniors we often lament not having redshirted: Higdon, Cole, Butt, Charlton, Ross, Gedeon, D Thomas.
I’m probably missing a few from both lists. It’s good to have the discussion.
October 1st, 2019 at 7:00 AM ^
Cole started every game as a true freshman and Butt started too. It would have been nuts to redshirt them.
October 1st, 2019 at 8:51 AM ^
True - we lament their lack of redshirt for slightly different reasons, since they had to play as freshmen (and they weren’t very good then, of course, because we had to hatch them early). The others didn’t need to play, except Ross, perhaps.
September 30th, 2019 at 6:18 PM ^
Mazi Smith played at the end of the game on Saturday
September 30th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
Was looking intently for him. Did not see him.
October 1st, 2019 at 1:29 AM ^
He didn't. You saw Phil Paea.
September 30th, 2019 at 6:19 PM ^
Anthony Solomon has played special teams in all four games according to MGoBlue.com.
September 30th, 2019 at 7:18 PM ^
Interesting that none of the frosh OL have played yet. Also was hoping that Jalen Perry got in a few game reps (although it's early and he may yet over the next few games)
Edit: just noticed Karsen Barnhart did, sorry

All I know is if we get one of the big three receivers back with Cornelius and Ronnie and we’re good next year at receiver.

I can’t wait to see Giles in the slot next year.... gonna be crazy!

IIRC it was Quinten Johnson who is injured, not George
