CB Depth, The Secondary Going Forward

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on November 20th, 2019 at 4:56 PM

I think many of us are happy to see that Don Brown is not a "one trick pony" and understands zone coverages, brackets, etc as UM has been mixing up coverages a lot more this year - as pointed out in the media and on this blog. Of course, we probably wish it would have happened sooner - like after the Indiana game last year, or halftime of the OSU game.

That said, it's nice to see that the staff will change based on enough evidence of failure and its own personelle.  Still, we know DB loves man coverage with lock down corners, allowing his front 7 to wreak havoc.

So my questions for the board are

1) With Hill gone next year, and Ambry our only "lock down" corner, will we see a lot more zone schemes going forward?

2) Does Gray have the ability to emerge as a "lock down" or is he probably just a solid B1G corner?

3) Given Daxton's speed, is it possible he plays more of a pure slot CB role going forward than that of a traditional ball hawking safety? - as we seem to have more depth at safety than CB right now.

4) How are we looking in recruiting with CBs? - I know we were still in it for the 4 star Darian Green-Warren.  Have to think Julian Barnett is questioning his decision to sign with MSU at this point (maybe we can pick him off in the transfer portal)

Yes, DB has used zone throughout his career...but he was also stubbornly married to press man since coming to UM (probably because he was dealing with CBs more talented than anything he had to work with in the past).

The fact that we failed to use zone the last two games last year while getting eviscerated on short slants and crossing routes is where much of the criticism was coming from. DB has more knowledge about defensive schemes in his pinky than all the minds on this board combined, but it doesn't mean we were prepared to run zone last year when needed, or perhaps we were too stubborn to rotate schemes.

The results and lack of adjustments from those final 2 games last year don't prove that DB can't run multiple coverages, they just prove that he chose to stick with the same scheme despite it getting exploited repeatedly.

Yeah this is an often repeated mistake.  We definitely played zone against OSU, we just didn't run it very well.  I know Brian is free to do as he wishes, but if did a UFR for the OSU games people might actually understand what went wrong.  Sure the talent disparity is part of it, but we definitely out schemed and out coached OSU in 16 and 17, and it would be nice to see the differences between 16 and 17 compared to 15 and 18.

We got a UFR for 15 and it showed a great game plan but UM being waaaay out talented. That was the year the we’re coming off winning the playoff and should’ve gone back.

Thats part of why last year was so frustrating. For the first time they had close to equivalent talent and for the first time they were badly out schemed (and in some spots still out talented).

Mich "outcoached" OSU in 2016? Seriously? Its the reason Mich lost. If never should have come down to a 50/50 official's call in OT. I was at that game and still can't believe it.

Start with the TD pass that Speight threw to Malik Hooker from 9 yards deep in his end zone in the 2Q. That is the single dumbest call that I've seen Harbaugh make in almost 5 years at UM. Just dumb! UM up only 3-0 at the time but you could feel the game was tilting in their favor. And instead of relying on a strong defense, he calls that play. What a gift!

UM drives to end the first half and "scores" on a 4th & 1. I say "scores" since the blocking back jumped the snap count. NO call. Instead of 4th & 6 and a FG, Mich gets 7. Funny, no one here brings up that officials "call" when they talk about "the spot". Go back and watch it on youtube.

Then midway 3Q, UM goes up 17-7 and I thought we were finished. But now Harbaugh goes into a shell. How many yards did UM gain in the last 1 1/2 quarters? Was it 30? 35? I'm close.

Hell, OSU even shanked a 20-yard FG attempt in the 4Q and still survived.

You guys had the better team that season and JH fudged it up. He should have been bitterly disappointed in himself.

How about the play before 4th and 1 in OT, where Curtis Samuel reverses field and there are no less than 4 obvious holds and/or blocks in the back?  If any of those are called then you’re looking at a 4th and 20.  OSU may have still pulled it off, but I doubt it.  Just admit you got every call, or lack there of, in that game.

There are always other factors that contribute to a game result, but the refs were the main factor in that game.

You're out of your damn mind if you think that spot was the only thing that went OSU's way from the officials. The whole game was called in an extremely slanted manner for OSU, numerous missed holds, PI's, etc. OSU finished with 2 penalties for a grand total of 5 yards in that game. The spot was the least ridiculous part of that officiating job honestly.

I think they prefer the three safety nickel to the three corner nickel, and Dax and the horde of incoming safeties give them the athleticism to do that for the next few years.

I don't share the total corner pessimism of some (think sleepers like the '18 group can be useful a la Stribling/Jeremy Clark, particularly the more multiple they are) but that mitigates corner depth concerns a bit.

1) I don't know if we'll see more, we're using a lot of zone concepts this year and it's working well. Being multiple and being able to play man and zone concepts is part of what makes our defense so good this year, so my guess would be something similar to what we do now.

2) Doubtful. He's only a RS Fr who's playing heavy minutes and doing fine to good while he's out there, so maybe there's enough time for him to develop into an elite CB. But his YMRMFSPA was tall Brandon Watson and he's ranked around the same spot Watson was in the composite, the 700-800 range. He's limited athletically and he's definitely been the most flawed CB when out there this year.

Obviously part of that is age, but a lot of it is also probably recruiting pedigree/athleticism. He'll get better and probably be a good CB, plus he has good height, but I don't think he'll ever be great. The hope is probably that someone younger than him, Green or Perry, or someone from his class (most likely Gemon Green) who is more athletic surpasses him and moves him to nickelback. Gray as a nickel can be Watson or better, and with defensive scheme that's no longer telling Watson to chase down OSU WRs in space, that's fine. Otherwise he's our CB2 in which case the same issues apply, where you really have to hope our scheme hides his weaknesses, and also deal with the fact that we have an unknown at nickel.

3) I'm sure he'll play some nickel, he does currently, and maybe that's a way to address nickel concerns especially if Gray ends up being the CB2. But do we have more safety depth? Faustin and German Green have made little to no noise, Quinten Johnson is a great athlete and real high upside but has missed this year due to injury. Besides them it's going to be true freshmen. Maybe 1 of them blows up over the offseason and we get a bonafide 3rd safety to play nickel, but I don't know that it's any more likely than the guys at DB.

4) Not sure about recruiting but the Barnett stuff is a pipe dream IMO. He didn't come here out of HS despite every sign pointing towards MSU trending down and Michigan trending up. I don't think another year of 10-2 vs 6-6 is going to force a transfer from him. And even if he did, he wouldn't be eligible next year (most likely) and would be transitioning to DB after playing WR at another school. If he did help, it would be in 2021 at the earliest IMO.

I really like Gray's potential.  He's usually in the correct position and has great coverage on a guy.  There's still some technique work to be done with getting his hips turned and head around on time, but I think he could be another hit.

I don't understand why our corner recruiting is not better, several have went to the league recently. You get to play multiple coverages with the main emphasis on being on an island. It's kind of like our interior d line recruiting, I just dont get it

1. I'm confident Zordich will coach up our CBs to the best of their ability.....but see #4. I would think DB would be confident enough in the players to use whatever scheme would be necessary.

2. Right now, Gray has tons of potential. He's playing an important position early in his career, and he will continue to get better. Sky's the limit there.

3. Not sure about that, but I do think he should be on the field a lot more going forward than he has been, especially with Hawkins and Metellus showing limitations that will be exposed by OSU. Dax has the athletic ability to run with OSU players. I'm thinking the aforementioned two do not.

4. CB recruiting is baffling. Someone mentioned that Zordich is a much better coach than recruiter and that seems true, but if so, others on staff should be compensating. It's an important position we seem to be whiffing on.

Gray is awful in man...he can play a zone and he's physical, but he's getting torched on a consistent basis. Ideally I'd love to see him add 15-20 lbs and move to safety. Since that won't happen, the depth is awful.

I've been incredibly disappointed in the CB recruiting and the ability to get guys who can make more of an instant impact like Hill and Long.

I think grad transfer may be the way next year. Go find the best MAC corner and get him to Ann Arbor for a year.

I wanna see Brown have a solid plan against a talented WR group. OSU this year will be a good start. Still think he’s the main reason we lost to PSU this year. Leaving his guys on an island against Hamler is an awful decision. That big one to Hamler over Metellus in 2nd half still irritates me. That stuff can’t happen.

I have faith that Vincent Gray can develop into a really good potential all big CB..

Wasn't he committed or almost committed to play for NW?

It seems like almost every year NW has some excellent corners..  they may not all be unreal in their first year, but they all turn out to be great players.

If you can find a corners coach who is as good of a coach as Zordich and a great recruiter, you’re lying. Coaches like that aren’t recruiting positions. They’re at the very least coordinators, if not head coaches.

for the vast majority of positions coaches nationwide, you get a good coach, or a good recruiter. If you want to replace Zordich for a better recruiter, that’s your personal choice. But realize while you’re upgrading the recruiting, you’re giving up coaching.

Every year there is a large group of hand-wringers...clearly this trend remains alive and "well". Every year the pass defense under Harbaugh and his staff has been stellar. The roster is stacked with lots of talent-whether y'all wish to acknowledge it or not...and these young kids make great progress from year to year. Here, the chances that the 2020 pass defense crew will be as good as the previous ones are excellent-and if Thomas returns they may well be the best of the Harbaugh era. How about we give them a chance and wait and see.
