Who gives a flying fuck about a pre season football game?
August 13th, 2021 at 9:08 PM ^
So…you’re saying they play to lose then? Because it’s ya know preseason?
August 13th, 2021 at 9:10 PM ^
I'm not speculating anything. I'm merely wondering who cares about preseason football games.
August 13th, 2021 at 9:26 PM ^
Just curious. How old are you? The Lions have been losing now for half a century. This new coach and regime came in and wanted to “bite kneecaps”. I could give two shits about preseason, but in the five minutes I watched tonight the Lions committed two penalties, dropped a pass and threw an interception. Again - no big deal, but it’s been happening now my entire lifetime (52 years) and I dare someone to argue the point that no matter what happens the Lions are gonna Lion.
August 13th, 2021 at 9:34 PM ^
52 years of being a manchild. Wonderful.
Lions went 4-0 in preseason during that 0-16 season.
Preseason NFL is literally the most meaningless thing in all of televised sports.

It’s Mandude.
August 14th, 2021 at 11:24 AM ^
Dorthy Mandude is a saint.

We call that the Marinelli Trophy.
August 13th, 2021 at 10:22 PM ^
22. I get it, being a Lions and Michigan fan is brutal. I can't imagine the pain of 30 years on top of what I've experienced. Hopefully it turns around on both fronts asap.
August 14th, 2021 at 6:32 AM ^
The Lions deserve plenty of grief for their history.
But preseason?
Something like 50% of the snaps in a pre season game are taken by guys who don’t make the team?
August 14th, 2021 at 12:08 PM ^
Pre-season football doesn't tell you anything substantial. I'm not a Lions fans but they looked decent when Goff was in there and then they pulled him and nothing beyond that mattered except maybe noticing that Kennedy guy looked pretty legit
August 14th, 2021 at 2:38 PM ^
The last RB that got the TD made a nice cutback move. I know it was against 17th stringers...
August 13th, 2021 at 9:29 PM ^
They were bad last yr, and lost key players, and hired a whole new front office and coaching staff, what would make you think they would be better this year.
August 13th, 2021 at 10:31 PM ^
I believe the 0-16 team was 4-0 in preseason
August 14th, 2021 at 1:43 PM ^
I'd be curious if there is *any* correlation between pre-season and regular season wins.
Except it's pre-season, so like 99.999% of football fans I don't care enough to actually look into it.
August 14th, 2021 at 3:55 PM ^
The 0-16 Lions were 4-0 in the preseason. Preseason means nothing!!
August 13th, 2021 at 9:09 PM ^
I bet the Bills so I would care plus it’s easy money.
August 13th, 2021 at 9:07 PM ^
I’m not a Lions fan, but they went 4-0 in preseason once and then... 0-16. I wouldn’t put much stake in these games.
August 13th, 2021 at 9:13 PM ^
And this is why our spring game wasn’t televised.

I thought Goff looked good. I'm willing to be hurt.

Only watching to see if Amon-Ra fights somebody.

Give up a long completion on 4th and 10... Lose by 1...
Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose!

Dan Campbell is comically bad at clock management. It’s like he was intentionally trying to do everything wrong in the last two minutes.
August 13th, 2021 at 11:08 PM ^
I know it is preseason, but I am genuinely disappointed he just gave up after the Leos got sacked with 10 seconds left and had two timeouts on the clock.
For someone who has been supposedly all fire and no quit; he gave up surprisingly easy at the end there.
August 14th, 2021 at 7:39 AM ^
And in practice, does his team quit like that too? "Ah, 5 minutes left boys? Screw it, go home"
These preseason games make a difference for a lot of the players who will likely never see the field in the NFL; it gives them another shot to show they can make a big play on the field.
I'm not going to scream from the mountains about it, but it was pretty piss poor just to quit a game with time left, preseason or not.
August 14th, 2021 at 9:53 AM ^
Great point about the players that won't make the final cut. Give those players a chance and the fans something to watch. [The fans paid for those tickets.] Can our hometown boy with no chance at least have one moment in the NFL? Put in the 4th string QB if you are worried about injuries.
The coaches have to practice the two minute drill too. How do you know you can run a serious two minute (15 second?) drill if you don't practice it even if you are doing it with the 4th string players. Run the damn drill for real and get better at it. (I am also thinking of Harbaugh here.) This falls short of excellence as a way of life. (Note to self, let us go do something excellent.)
August 14th, 2021 at 11:00 AM ^
If the team is worried about injuries, they should just not play the game period.
It's hard to go against what I feel when watching certain things take place. When he got sacked, and the team walked off the field, it felt lazy, ESPECIALLY coming from a head coach that basically talks about running through walls and eating legs. It felt pretty pathetic not trying.
Spot on about the 2-minute. They were one long play away from a FG to win a game. Very disappointing not giving it a try.
August 14th, 2021 at 11:28 AM ^
I really don’t understand why people would pay money to go to a preseason game. Yuck.

Going for two down 13-12 in the second half is totally a preseason game move. After all, these games are glorified scrimmages meant to get the guys more practice time and get them ready for the season. If it was the regular season Campbell (I think) would've kicked the PAT and tied it up. If he doesn't do that then he deserves to be fired on the spot.
August 14th, 2021 at 12:53 AM ^
What if he gets it? Rehired on the spot?
August 14th, 2021 at 11:06 AM ^
Only if I say so.

OP, I'll just leave this educational piece here for ya:
August 14th, 2021 at 8:14 AM ^
I know it’s pre season but Dan Campbell’s decision making should be questioned. I haven’t seen anyone discuss his bonehead call to go for it on 4th and 1 in his own territory with about a minute left in the half.
There will be a lot of excuse making about this but these are immediate red flags already.
August 14th, 2021 at 8:51 AM ^
He’s trying to evaluate backup offensive lineman.
What better way to do that do you have in mind? Do tell.
August 14th, 2021 at 10:01 AM ^
There is a knack to winning! When you have a chance to win you do the correct things in order to win! Especially with this losing ass franchise.
He has close to two months plus OTAs to evaluate back up OL. And if you read anything on the unit the backups are atrocious.
August 14th, 2021 at 12:58 PM ^
Wrong on every level.
The Lions were 4-0 in the preseason leading to 0-16.
Another little known fact: That 17-0 undefeated Dolphins team? Also lost to the Lions that preseason. Did that matter?
OTAs are generally non contact so not that useful either.
August 14th, 2021 at 8:25 AM ^
The first game of preseason is not an indication of much for any team. This forum topic sucks.
August 14th, 2021 at 11:09 AM ^
Goff looked good. Defense looked good. Maybe you should just be a browns fan bro
August 14th, 2021 at 1:50 PM ^
They were undefeated in the preseason of the year they went 0-16
August 14th, 2021 at 3:27 PM ^
I turned on the game right at the end and I saw the Lions run 2 passes and basically run no time off the clock plus the Bills didn't need to take any more timeouts. Too much time left on the clock and of course the Bills go right down the field and kick a game winning FG. I guess if you're using the preseason to practice for the regular season, the Lions are already in midseason form.
August 14th, 2021 at 4:32 PM ^
Two ways to think about that sequence....
He could be giving the backup a couple more game reps. Since the game doesn't count, I'm fine with it.
OTOH, if Campbell / Lynn are coaching the way they would during the season, then it's horrid clock management and it's more of the same.
I'm hoping it's the first one. But since it's the Lions, it's highly likely that it's the second one. I'll stick with the hope until I get burned the first time this year. It's very possible you're right though.
