Step down, yes. But it makes a ton of sense to me. A lot of my wife's family is in Youngstown, and they absolutely love Pelini (and the Stoops) and will treat him like royalty. He's going to be treated like royalty there, and it's not too bad of program either. It's a bit hypocritical for all of us to be so confused on the choice he made when we are currently hoping our future coach is one who steps down a level from what is generally considered a better job in order to coach in his hometown. When you think about it makes sense, but we'll see how long he plans on staying there.

Youngstown State issued a statement saying they were caught completely off guard by this, that no agreement has been reached between the two parties, and that no discussion was even initiated.

In sum, FOOTBALL SCHOOL IS BULLSHIT. Seriously, can we all agree to have a B/R-esque moratorium on citing them?

Nebraska still owes Pelini $7.9 million on his contract.   The buyout gets reduced depending on his new position.   Tressel got him on the cheap.

Pelini gets to take the family back to his hometown for a few years while still (mostly) on the Huskers' dime and auditions for another gig.

I live in Youngstown... Work in Youngstown.... I've known about this since yesterday morning, but to be honest I really had my doubts... Tressel got this deal done last week... Apparently Bo's son wants to attend and graduate from Cardinal Mooney here in Youngstown , Bo's alma mater (mine as well)... I can see this being a great 4-5 year run before he sets his eyes on a big job again... $$ isn't much of an issue obviously.. I think he'll still be collecting around $7mill from the balance of his Nebraska contract ... One interesting fact is Ron Stoops, Bob-Mark-Mike's brother, will most likely remain on this staff... He was on Eric Wolford's staff the last 3-4 years before Wolford was fired 2 weeks ago... The Pelinis and Stoops are very close ... It's gonna be interesting... The official news just broke around 10pm here ... It's already a huge deal

I saw on a Nebraska board this tweet from SI's Thayer Evans:

Just spoke w/ Bo Pelini. Denied reports of being offered or accepting Youngstown State job. "It's all a complete fabrication of the truth."

According to Pelini’s contract, the NU athletic department owes him about $7.9 million through February 2019, an amount that would be paid in monthly installments on the condition that he make a reasonable attempt to find work. If Pelini accepts a job that pays him less than $150,000 per month, or $1.8 million per year, Nebraska would owe him the difference.

So, he can go home for a few years, still get PAID, and, when the right job comes along, boom, he's the first one in line.  Brilliant, actually.

Maybe its rougher out there than we thought. I mean, UNLV is set to hire a high school coach. Even if he is from Youngstown, I'd be surprised if he'd take a I-AA job over the myriad of choices he should have have in FBS.

UNLV is basically bankrupt and quickly bound for the UAB exit from the FBS highway... they're hiring this high school coach in the desperate hope that one of his players, whose father happens to be the CEO of UFC and owner of a casino, will follow him and they can have that family as their own Phil Knight.
