Berenson's last year (!)

Brian casually mentioned that in today's UV, but it was news to me. (Unless that it a brilliantly subtle April fools joke). Did I miss the "Oh s---, what the f--- are we gonna do?" thread? Who is next in line? West Virginia doesn't even have a hockey program. Can we steal Enrico Blasi from Miami?

I don't think it's an April Fools' joke. The original post that the link goes to was posted on 3/29. Also, I hate Enrico Blasi. I would rather put Tom Izzo on our bench than Blasi. Don't even think about that. now for the part I commented on the last one: I really, really don't want to see him go. I wish he could coach another 20 years. I just can't imagine a different coach, it's just not Michigan Hockey to me. Real question: Will this affect us in a bad way? Like in football, where a new coach means a rebuilding period? and where recruits won't come here as likely because of a new coach or a rumored retirement? I have no idea who would take the job... or who we could get that would be able to keep the tradition as a Michigan Man and as a good hockey coach. My picks/suggestions (not real this time): Mike Babcock (friend of Red's, coach of some other, probably less important team) Chris Summers (forget Phoenix...) Chris Brown (player-coach anyone?) JMFJ (real middle finger to the Kings' GM and his shot at Jack and UM coaching) Brian (or whoever writes/runs YostBuilt) Me (credentials: played hockey, coached one youth spring team with 7-3 record)

If we didn't give it to Mel Pearson, it would probably be the greatest injustice we could think of. The only greater injustice would be if we gave it to Blasi. A little history: Sometime like 10 years ago (it was somewhere between 99-01), Miami OH was looking for a head coach. Mel Pearson was on our staff under Red, and was one of the best assistants and best recruiting coaches out there. Miami (and many others) were desperate to get him as their Head. He considered the fact for a long time, even talked to Lloyd Carr about it. He eventually decided that he would decline, because he couldn't leave Yost, he couldn't leave Michigan, and being here was much more important to him than becoming a head coach. He also reasoned that if he stayed, he could have the chance to be the successor to Red and keep the tradition and the team going in a seamless transition. Miami hired Enrico Blasi when Mel turned the job down, and Blasi earned Coach of the Year honors that year in the CCHA. Blasi was their second choice to Mel, and Mel stayed because he was loyal to us and because he saw no place other than here. If we hired Blasi over him, it would be an awful slap in the face. Also, I just hate Blasi. He is a little rat. Every time I see him on camera or in person, I want to punch him in his stupid face. I've hated him and Miami for years, not just because of this past weekend. I also just hate everything to come from Ohio except for Bo and Cedar Point, and that fact will never change.

I don't know, did you see the segments when Miami and Michigan played (during the CCHA tournament?) "The Brotherhood" That locker room looked like a stage for Joel Osteen than it did for a coach and his team. Theatrical and absurd. On the other hand the Michigan segment was amazing (Mock Rock performance.) Those guys should personality. You're right though, nothing to hate, but that segment was a little annoying.

somewhere down the line I could definitely see Summers coming back to coach. I just kinda get the vibe, that he would be good at that, for no real reason. Obviously it would be way in the future, after Mel and perhaps someone else too. I also have no idea if that's something he'd want to do, but I'm OK with the idea. It would make me VERY happy for him to have a distinguished NHL career (including a 6 goal game) (maybe a Stanley Cup, but only if he gets traded to the Wings :-p), a short NHL coaching career, complete with a Jack Adams and then see him come back to coach Michigan for about 27 years, including continuing an unholy streak of tourney appearances, many conference regular season and tournament titles, a lot of FFs and multiple NCs. He should also change his place of birth to Saskatchewan and make sure to come back to U-M and get a masters from the B-school. Am I forgetting anything?

thank whatever higher power you may subscribe to for this. And then thank He/She/It/They again that Dave Brandon would never ask him. He's a great coach. Miami can keep him forever. EDIT: I thought this was important enough to post twice. I didn't double-post on accident, don't be ridiculous!

Its not an officially designated thing like they had with Tiller or Bowden, but its 99.9% certain he will be our next coach. The real question is who will eventually replace him. As far as its effect on recruiting and what not, I would call it negligible at best. Mel has been an assistant for something like 19 years and should be able to pick up right where Red leaves off. Plus, its not like Red is going to be going very far. Much like Bo and Lloyd, I expect he will be around. That being said, I really do wish Red would stick around for a bunch more years. About the only thing he doesn't have on Ron Mason is the all-time win crown, and that's only because Mason went straight to coaching college hockey, unlike Red who had an NHL playing and coaching career before hand. That would take I think at least another 7 years to accomplish though, so whether he came back in 2011-12 or not, unless he's prepared to coach until he's 90, I don't think that's happening.

The only two coaches that should even be considered are Mel Pearson or Billy Powers! And I think that is what will happen it will be either but probably Mel. Oh and I would hate it if Blasi came in. He is a huge douche and I have had that opinion well before the events of last Sunday.

His skin is falling off his face. Red deserves some good years to relax and enjoy the fruits of his accomplishments. I hope next year's tournament turns into Red's personal victory lap and sends him off in a manner befitting what he has done for Michigan.

I can't imagine the job going to anyone but Pearson. It does seem as if he's been groomed for it. If we learned anything from football, drastic changes to tradition-bound programs can bring a lot of short-term anguish (hope, hope, hope that it's not long term). Nobody can replicate the Red persona and presence. It's one-of-a-kind. But at least someone who has dedicated his career to Michigan and to Red can understand what it means to uphold a tradition that is not only special, but is also not holding the program back.

I always assumed it was an open secret that Pearson was the successor. Unlike football where (IMHO) the windows really did have to be opened up for some fresh air a few years back, i think continuity for the hockey program is key. Mel has been a huge part of the revitalization that Red established and obvs deserves the job over anyone.

Other than the fact that Red retiring after this coming season has been assumed for at least the last year. It's a very open secret that Red's wanted to coach a game at the Big House for a long time and that he wasn't going to be around for all that much longer, so as soon as rumors started swirling about a game at Michigan Stadium, the thought was that Red was gone after it. I actually think that if we had won the NC this season, he would have retired, but obviously some ECAC ref REALLY wanted Red to come back and coach us :-) Agree: -Mel is our next coach. Even an "open search" should be open in name only to make us look good, it would be a travesty if he didn't get it. Maybe a Mike Babcock could be considered, but other than that, it's Mel. Done deal. Red wants it to be Mel, Mel wants to do it, there is no reason it should not be Mel. -The only people I've ever encountered who think Rico is a good person, and not just a good coach (which he is, obviously) are Miami fans. One thing for people to think about: A lot of college hockey programs nowadays (including Miami and State is starting to)) are recruiting a little differently than "normal" and a way that can really only be done in hockey. Instead of taking players directly out of high school, they recruit people that played in juniors for a couple more years. Check their rosters. Cody Reichard, the CCHA POY is a 23 year old sophomore. Our senior captain, Chris Summers, is 22, for comparison. Miami has MULTIPLE juniors born in 1986 and so on down the line where they have "old" players that still had 4 years of eligibility left when they entered college, which obviously gives them a pretty big advantage, in some ways. It also helps with retaining players as many of them don't have much of a shot at the NHL and are just looking for the scholarship and degree. They're good, but at their age, they should be and they're not all that, or they would be in a higher level already. In contrast, we recruit mostly high-skilled players that are "normally" aged and require more development, skillwise, mentally and physically. We have a few "old" players (Langlais, Glendening, Hunwick, Ciraulo, Elmblad and maybe a few more) but 4 of those are walk-ons and only 2 played the whole year.

are in rare form tonight! Come up with that on your own? Or did you see one of the approximately 900 million other posts that run along the lines of "Does West Virginia have a ______ coach that we can borrow" and just run with that? I hope you're enjoying yourself, whoever you may be. We'll just sit over here with our 9 hockey NC's and complain about how woe is us. Good luck in Detroit next weekend, Red won his first NC in his 11th year, maybe Rico will do the same.

GoBlueFoSho was a little nicer than I'd like to be, and since you got banned anyway, I'll just remain calm in the knowledge that you'll never read this... FUCK YOU! IF RICO SUCIO GETS HIS NC I WILL COME PISS ON THE RING. IF YOU THINK YOU DESERVE ANY BETTER THAN TO LOSE TO BC IN 2OT BY SCORING THREE TIMES AND HAVING ALL THREE CALLED OFF BECAUSE OF A WHISTLE (WHILE THE PUCK IS STILL ON THE FORWARD'S STICK), THEN YOU ARE SORELY MISTAKEN. I HOPE YOU LOSE 50-0 AND CRY TO YOUR MOTHER
