Ben Herbert appreciation thread
I don't know if Ben is considered the best in the business, but he should be. I honestly think one reason this team looks and plays like it does is because of his hard work.
So no insiders info or anything really news worthy with this post, I just thought the guy deserves some praise. Go Blue!

Wait till he gets a year or two with our freshman defensive studs.

Soooo.....
FIRE HERBERT, or....?
September 4th, 2022 at 10:38 AM ^
I know this reverse-psychology / joke is a thing on MGoBlog, and I've used variations on it myself in other situations, but here it feels awkward to me.
But the main thing, yeah, thanks Ben Herbert.

FIRE BORGES wasn't a reverse-psychology thing. We legit wanted him fired. Fire Bakich! was an expression of our love and respect for him.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:27 AM ^
So Clarence, is Fire Warde! reverse psychology or an expression of love and respect?
September 4th, 2022 at 12:10 PM ^
Deep, maybe permanent ambivalence.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:11 PM ^
Depends on the day
September 4th, 2022 at 1:09 PM ^
Fire Warde! is like background chatter at a dive bar. I ignore it since I'm really just there to win at pool.
September 4th, 2022 at 2:24 PM ^
He’s got to go!
September 4th, 2022 at 12:15 PM ^
Yeah, I totally get it, and I've used the same joke myself in other circumstances. Saying "you're a jerk" to a friend can be be nice, even sweet.
But joking about firing somebody, even in love and respect, still feels funny to me. I don't mean to argue about it or insist others stop doing it. I'm just explaining why it feels awkward to me.
Imagine if you came to work and every morning your boss, as a joking way to praise your work, yells "Fire Clarence!"

Fire Blue Vet!
September 4th, 2022 at 3:12 PM ^
I'm laughin'!
Still laughin'.
(How DARE you?!)
There it goes again, more laughs.
September 4th, 2022 at 1:12 PM ^
Since Clarence isn't my real name, I'd laugh right along with my boss. "Yeah and kick the bastard in the ass on the way out!" I could even see us bonding over that.
September 4th, 2022 at 3:14 PM ^
Your name's not really Clarence?!
I thought that was an MGoBlog rule, that we had to use our real names.
For instance, my parents named me Blue, after a dog I believe, and Vet is my married name.
September 4th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
Maybe not?
We like Herbert, no doubt, but not every joke/meme/thing has to get overplayed all the time.
Let's just let "FIRE BAKICH" be "FIRE BAKICH" which is a nice time and place for the board and a funny, if perhaps overused after a while, thing.
No....I AM totally fun at parties, trust me.

Maybe CO State just not used to that kind of heat, but several CSU player def looked gassed/cramps while all the UM players looked fresh even against uptempo (hard to compare, as the CSU offense wasn't on the field very long!)
September 4th, 2022 at 10:04 AM ^
It's easier to stay not cramped when you get to sit out every other play because the entire defense is rolling out 37 players all game long...

Any advantage the Rams might have enjoyed from practicing at higher elevations was quickly erased.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:57 AM ^
Erased by domination.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:12 PM ^
Our guys are used to puking at least once every practice. I know it's not Nebraska level puking, but every little bit helps.

You can tell a lot about Herbert from watching his interviews. The man is intense and locked in. And he is organized, with a big staff and action plans for everyone on the team.
September 4th, 2022 at 2:26 PM ^
Said every fan base everywhere about every S&C coach ever after dominating an overmatched opponent. (Nightmares of GA game linger)

But does he believe in chocolate milk? I haven't heard much about milk flavor deliveries to the Schembechler Hall kitchen lately...
September 4th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
Chocolate milk is very very good!

Mazi Smith, Blake Corum, Donovan Edwards, the rest of the team and this Michigan guy agree.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:55 AM ^
What about Jenkins? Dude put on 50 lbs of muscle since he got here.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:21 AM ^
But does he have a pet wolf?
September 4th, 2022 at 12:23 PM ^
It does feel like Michigan under Herbert has tended to get the absolute most out of guys who are willing to work, at least in a physical sense. As we see with schools that recruit as well or better than us, that's not something to take for granted. Even just within the B1G, Penn State and Ohio State seem to whiff (or just get uninspiring results) more often on highly rated guys than we do. All of the coaches deserve credit for that, but Herbert too often goes unsung. Cheers to him
September 4th, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
Blake… “players willing to work” - IMO, is the key phrase. I don’t know how great of a difference the “attitude and effort” over the last two years - as illustrated by Aidan Hutchinson - and others - has manifested in their performance. But, I think attitude and effort can go a long way.
It wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a sense of entitlement in the locker rooms of several teams in the conference and country.
September 4th, 2022 at 12:54 PM ^
There's no doubt, the team changed for the much better, not just the better, but the much better, after he was hired.

In a profession where too many guys are focused on hipster facial hair, performative faux drill sergeant ranting for any camera they can find, and shmedium golf shirts, UM is so fortunate to have Ben Herbert, who does nothing but develop young men into athletic freaks. Abigail deserves a massive amount of credit for running an elite fueling program in that Freak Factory as well.
September 4th, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^
PNW, what does this mean: shmedium golf shirts?
September 4th, 2022 at 3:16 PM ^
Too small so they're tight, making muscles (and bellies) look bigger?
September 4th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
Did you see the before and after pics of Mazi's physique during Saturday's game?
He's a Maize and Blue Hulk.
That is partly due to coach Herbert's training program.
