Basketball Recruiting Update?
With all of the excitement of the football recruiting wrapping up, I was wondering what was going on for the basketball team. Now, I definitely understand that Beilein and Co. are a little busy with the season being in full swing, but there must be something going on. The last I heard, UM signed Smotrycz and now Zeigler may be going elsewhere. Other than that, I haven't heard a whole lot. Who else is Michigan going after and who is the most legitimate possibility at this point. I'm guessing we don't have many more spots open, one maybe two?

It seems that we are still in the mix for Zeigler.

Very interesting update. Forgot about Hardaway Jr. signing. Should be interesting to see if we can land a solid big man like Horford.

Also watch out for Jon Horford.

Okay they're over there.

tells me we have a great shot at Zeigler. Horford would also be a great get but what we really need now is a big man in the center (ala Cronin-size).

Michigan hasn't had a classic center since Tim McCormick or Ray Tarpley, or a really good one since undersized Juwan Howard. Michigan has gotten by with threes (i.e. Mills, who was a two in HS before a six-inch growth spurt put him at five) and fours (i.e. Traylor) in the five spot forever.
This team doesn't have a true center right now; the current tall guys are threes and fours, too. I would love to see Michigan have a legit five again. Also, I would love to see Michigan in on some of the higher-profile recruits. I miss the old days when Michigan was in on top ten guys and a few of them decided to wear the maize and blue.
Someday, I would love to see Michigan cramming the ball into the low post and being rewarded for it.

You can always cross reference with Dylan's site on any news for UM Hoops. Excellent content over there.

Imagine how good we will be next season if: a) Manny returns (as he should), b) Ziegler commits (again, as he should, lol), and c) Horford commits!?
C: Horford (Fr), McLimans (Fr), Morgan (Fr)
PF: Novak (Jr), Smotrycz (Fr), Wright (Sr)
SF: Harris (Sr), Vogrich (So)
SG: Ziegler (Fr), Lucas-Perry (Jr), Hardaway (Fr)
PG: Morris (So), Douglass (Jr)
That'd be a nice team. Morris would be a much more complete point guard. Harris and Ziegler would both be able to score at will. Novak would bring a lot of energy. Horford would (hopefully) be able to beat out McLimans and Morgan. Then you've got A LOT of guys that can come off the bench and shoot lights out!

Horford wouldn't have to beat out McLimans because he is definitely not a center.

No offense, I agree that McLimans isn't a center (nor is Morgan), but if we don't get Horford...then who is going to play center? If you haven't noticed, there's a 'mild' shortage of big men on this roster.

Morgan is practicing at the Center position. Why would you think he is not a Center? He will most likely start next year.

My sincerest apologies. I'm not aware of where walk-ons are practicing. You are! lol.
EDIT - I wasn't being sarcastic. I was admitting that I was wrong and less knowledgable than the other poster.

I'm confused. Do you really not know that Morgan is not a walk-on? Morgan participated in the NBAPA Top 100 camp after his Junior year and is expected to be the starting Center next year even if we sign Horford.

oops...I meant to say 'red-shirt'...not 'walk-on.'
it all makes sense now, lol.

I like the thought, but something tells me that Ziegler might be waiting to here what Manny does with the pro draft. I wouldn't be surprised if Manny came back and Ziegler went elsewhere, or vice versa. Without Manny and with Ziegler the rotation would look a little different:
C: Horford, Morgan
PF: Smotrycz, Novak, Wright
SF: Novak, Ziegler
SG: Perry, Vogrich, Hardaway
PG: Morris, Douglass
The guards are pretty interchangable, wouldn't be surprised if Morris started at the 1 and Douglass at the 2. Ziegler is a 3 all the way and probably will be the first guy off the bench, at least to start the season. He would be a great energy guy off the bench.

I'd imagine that we would be more likely to start Ziegler than Smotrycz.
C: Horford, PF: Novak, SF: Ziegler, SG: LLP, PG: Morris

2-3 more at UM and would see plenty of PT as a Frosh if he is the real deal.

Ziegler would also probably be at the 3 behind Manny - at 6'5", 175, he's virtually a Harris phyiscal clone.

Received what is conceivably his best offer yet from Duke, I believe over the last month.
I'm not sure whether I'll see Trey in person or talk to him over the course of the season, but I may try and make it up to Saginaw for the Mt. Pleasant @ Saginaw game. I'm starting to see it harder that he's going to stay in-state, but that's just me.
I think that Amir Williams would be a huge coup for the Wolverines, though. He's 2011 of course.
