Baseball upsets #4 Illinois

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Michigan is two games away from the NCAA Tournament.

This is the first meeting between Michigan and #4 Illinois this season.

Michigan is in the B1G Tournament Semifinals for the second consecutive season. But this time, they have the advantage and only need to win once today to advance to the championship against Maryland.

Game is on BTN.

EDIT: ONTO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Not sure how it works but how in the hell did we not play Illinois this season? Don't baseball teams play a million games in a regular season? Seems odd.

So how do the pitching matchups play out for this game and a possible game tonight? Does Michigan have an edge in either game, I know Illinois has a great staff.

The Bo hat is the best. I don't like that fat yellow M they are wearing with the yellow bill. It doesn't say "Michigan" to me. It looks like some generic thing you'd find at Target or Sears.

Let's get one thing straight: on the Sox and Astros in the 80s, during the pullover era, those looks were pretty fucking spectacular.

Adidas butchering them for college baseball is an entirely different story.

These announcers are so full of shit. These aren't throwbacks.

THESE are the throwbacks Michigan wore.

does the B1G play these games in a nearly-empty MLB ballpark? I'd love them instead to rotate the tournament to mid-sized cities with minor-league ballparks within the B1G 'footprint'. The attendance would be much better---cities with MLB franchises won't pay much attention; a city such as Grand Rapids getting the B1G Tournament would treat it as much more an event, especially if rotated with other cities every 3rd or 4th year.

Just like that epic failure B1G Hockey Tournament

the B1G refuses to do the thing that actually makes sense and hold the tournament on campuses.

The only thing I can think of is the student athletes relishing the chance to play in an MLB stadium. Other than that I have no clue.

Also they should sell beer at off campus sites. I went to the B1G hockey tournament in Detroit and was severely disappointed that they weren't selling beer.

Or, ya know, campus sites.

Didn't the tournament do pretty well in Nebraska? You know, where there's an established college baseball fanbase.

I wish I had some extra time, because I would actually love to catch a game at Target field this weekend. It's a selling point for me. But then I root for Michigan and don't always have a local MLB team to see whenever I want.

And two hours is a bit too long to drive.

I think the smaller-town idea is pretty good. But honestly I don't think this well draw very well anywhere. Smaller venues at least look respectable.

In fairness, WD, the B1G hockey tournament at least had the reasonably successful CCHA finals to use as a blueprint for holding games at the Joe. There is no similar record of success for college baseball.
