B1G Bball coaching preference

If you had a son with Big 10 worthy basketball talent,  other than Juwan, which B1G coach would you most want him to play for, and why?

I hate to say Chris Collins,  but at least he would get a degree from Northwestern.

And during the recruiting process I would want to ask about the down on all fours, looking like a rabid dog moment at least once.

If you want a coach who has done more with less, there's no one better than Steve Pikiell from Rutgers. This was a team that historically couldn't cut it in the Big East and he turned them into a respectable program. Offensively he's still way behind the curve, but the job he's done for that school is massively overlooked.

Changing this up a bit and looking at it from my perspective (since I don't have kids yet). My least favorite coaches in high school and college were the Izzo types. Screamers. I absolutely hated playing under them and felt that I underperformed while being coached by those types. I think I did significantly better competing for coaches who were calm when addressing my mistakes and offered criticism that was meant to teach me about my output versus telling me I screwed up first. That's how I tried to coach the athletes I used to interact with. So for that reason, I would avoid Izzo.

Painter and Holtmann would probably be my top 2.

Matt Painter is a good coach, seems like a good guy and is most likely going to stick around. I think the last point is important, having known a player who was pushed out after a coaching change. Also, Painter doesn't recruit many one and dones or two and dones, but he still wins. That allows players a better chance to develop into starters.

Why can't I pick Howard?

If my kid couldn't play for Howard, I'd hope he played outside the Big Ten.

Considering I have no sons, and even if I did they would probably be 5'10"-11" at best, this is not a concern.  :)

You definitely wouldn’t like if my sons were top skill position players in football Michigan would have to do a whole lot of selling(or actually show it on the field) just to get a visit. OSU would automatically get one.

I am going with Pikiell. I have been around him and seen him coach up close as I was at Stony Brook when he was hired.

I had to think about this. It's kind of sad Juwan is the only coach who really jumps to the top of the list and he is not an option for this exercise.

I like the couple of picks for Steve Pikiell based on pure accomplishment given restraints but you're still stuck in the middle of the pack at best.

Fred Hoiberg is a good coach and a good guy, but being at Nebraska for basketball kind of sucks.

Fran McCaffery seems like an okay guy and his sons played for him so he can't be that awful.

Matt Painter has been mentioned a couple times and he seems like a good guy and you would win a good number of games. I do question how much development really happens at Purdue.

Given all that, I'm giving Mike Woodson a shot. He has NBA background and playing at Indiana should mean you usually have a chance to be competitive and will get exposure. It's all about NIL now!!!

Holtmann is a good coach, and we are lucky that our rival has a decent coach to sharpen the iron against. Hoiberg is a good guy and a decent college coach that sucked as Bulls coach because he was too nice and his FO really ticking sucked. Collins and and Pikiell (spelling) are very strong coaches, too. To pretend that there aren’t very good coaches in the BIG besides Juwan is too much homerism. Painter is also very good.

Turgeon is a crank, but he gets results and his players seem to like him. The only three real holes are Izzo, Fran, and Gard. Yet, all three of those guys win. Fran would be the nicest of those three to play for—but I wouldn’t let my sons live in Iowa.

How much of an NBA lock is my hypothetical kid? If he has the measureables and raw talent to be drafted in two years I'll probably have a different answer than if his ceiling is a nice role player as an upper classmen.

Since we’re limited to the B1G, I would have to go with Painter like most of the other posters here. His program is stable, he is stable, and he is an excellent coach.

If I could choose outside the B1G it would be Jay Wright, mostly because he seems to run a clean program where guys “play school” and I love the way his teams play basketball (as much as I love the success of Juwan, I do like the aesthetics of Beilein-ball more).

However, I only have daughters so I say Kim Barnes Arico.

[edit: I thought about this a little bit more and realized, unless my kid had NBA potential, I would probably want them to pick based on the university and not the coach. Purdue doesn’t exactly seem like a dream undergrad school to me unless you are really passionate about engineering. It would all depend on what my kids want to study and discussions with professors in that department (as well as seeing how prominent they are and how kooky their publications are). If they go into college undecided I would say Wisconsin because they have the best (non-UM) campus and I like the state. If my kids attend any B1G school I would be happy unless its OSU because fuck that.]

As much as it pains me to say it, Chris Holtmann at OSU.  I live in Indy and have watched him from his Butler days.  He took over as interim HC when Brad Miller took a leave of absence.  It was a strange situation but he got the team playing really well.

I was disappointed when he left Butler for OSU.  I know it was a bigger school in a bigger conference, but I also knew that he was a really good coach that would keep OSU winning.

Little surprised by some of the Chris Holtmann responses.

Are you sure you would want your son playing for a guy who can't win on the biggest stages? He's the right guy for that, that's for sure.
