Are we still in it for Josh Conerly Jr.?

Submitted by Jota09 on February 4th, 2022 at 6:08 PM

I saw he decided not to sign on Wednesday and pushed his commitment to March.  Harbaugh's situation killed signing day and all our targets heading into it went elsewhere save Josh.

What a messed up end to this recruiting class.  We still had some needs; another edge, JCJ, and a RB.  Now that Jim is back will we be addressing those or moving on to the next class.  I can't remember a signing day of any sort without some sort of recruiting post.  I understand why but it still felt weird how we all basically ignored it but for a few board posts.  My recruiting brain needs closure.

From Seth's front page post about Harbaugh. .

"...most of the class was already signed in December, and this is still technically just the first day of another signing period, so the only people making a big deal out of the first Wednesday in February these days are those looking to create drama."

Stop being dramatic. On this particular recruitment, I do not think anyone has expected him to sign with Michigan for a long time. We are just a hat on the table it seems.

I also heard Seth say on last week's roundtable that Michigan still had needs going into this signing day.  They were obviously not met.  Sorry if wondering about them going forward is dramatic.  I don't listen to Sam's show or visit the premium sites.  If it isn't on here I don't see it.  I didn't think I crossed any lines asking my questions and deserved a personal attack.

I do not subscribe to premium sites and get the majority of my information from mgoblog. Being uninformed is not an excuse for spreading misinformation like "Harbaugh's situation killed signing day and all our targets heading into it went elsewhere save Josh."

Misinformation?  FFS!  Harbaugh's situation killed any attention signing day would have gotten because we didn't think we had a coach and there was no point in this site covering it.  I legit thought we were still trying for a RB, edge and Conerly.  I was also under the impression that Henry was exploring his options ever since Morgan left and we were still one of those options.  If there was a post or article on this site clarifying this that I missed I'm sorry.  I already apologized for my phrasing down below.  I don't know if I pissed in your cheerios in a past life or something but geez.

Seems like the industry thinks this is probably a USC/Washington battle and Michigan was effectively eliminated when he didn't choose the Wolverines in December. He's been trending away for quite awhile now though.

I'd be (pleasantly) shocked if he ends up in the class.

Sam Webb addressed Conerly specifically within the last couple of days and he said Michigan is still very much in contention. Conerly moved his commitment date back to March before the Harbaugh-to-NFL stuff arose, and he did so because he wanted to take additional visits, and committing this week didn’t give him the time he needed for the visits.

Holland says we're still in it. I just looked and Conerly's dad is still liking A LOT Michigan stuff on twitter(3 tweets today).

But it sounds like the schools on the west coast are pushing hard.

We finished most of this class in Dec.  We weren't getting Henry or the TX RB and Harbaughs NFL dalliance had nothing to do with that.  That fact that Conerly is waiting can only help after the recent uncertainty.

What a messed up end to this recruiting class.

Let’s be honest. This is the only reason you started a stupid thread was to take a shot at Harbaugh above. Weak. Very weak!

I'm sorry you feel that was my intention.  I guess my phrasing was poor.  I felt his NFL interest dominated the signing day coverage for Michigan fans instead of getting recruiting news.  I know that there wouldn't have been much news, this signing day is dead now.  But there is usually still some sort of post wrapping things up.

I wasn't mad at Jim for looking at the NFL.  If he had been petty and released a statement saying "Serves ya right for trying to fire me last year" I would have laughed.  I didn't want him to leave and am happy he's back.  What I was trying to get at was the timing of his interview falling exactly on signing day ruined it for this site's coverage of who signed.  Even though this is now the crappy signing day I remember there still being something going into it and a wrap up.  No point this year because we all thought we didn't have a coach.  No blame just circumstance.

I don't know who "all" our targets were that went elsewhere, but NSD Part II is getting less relevant every year. OSU was waiting on only two guys and they sent their NLIs in before 10:30AM. It was pretty calm everywhere except at Texas ATM.

"Harbaugh's situation killed signing day"

Harbaugh's situation and NSD had nothing to do with each other. Michigan basically wasn't recruiting anybody who was signing on NSD except Andrew Paul, and Paul was already leaning elsewhere.

JH's situation did not kill signing day. None of the "targets" were expected to sign Wednesday. The class was all but done except Conerly, and Josh had pushed back his decision to March well before JH started entertaining the NFL.

Kevonte Henry has not been coming to UM for a long time. Him not signing on ESD sealed that. He and Conerly were the only commits that didnt sign on ESD.

They didnt miss out on anyone else Wednesday because of JH's situation. The only other player they really were trying for was the RB Paul from Texas, but he had been trending away from UM and towards Clemson and Georgia for a while now.

Pretty much everything you said here is inaccurate. Either you weren't paying attention, were misinformed by ESPN trying to get clicks, or you purposely said a bunch of wrong stuff to take a shot at Harbaugh.

Was there a recruiting post on this site about Henry being officially done with Michigan?  I knew he didn't sign but I don't recall it being said we were now out and had no shot.  I'm sorry, I have gotten used to using this site exclusively for recruiting news and it is few and far between anymore.  But thanks for making me feel bad for asking.

You are being a bit thin-skinned regarding any criticism….lighten up Francis

Whether you meant to or not, you phrased your OP in an inflammatory way to a group of folks probably fatigued by the continuious Harbaugh talk/blame — and also came across as quite sure of yourself regarding the affects of the coaching search while later admitting multiple times that you don’t really follow recruiting much at all.

As for your original question it has been answered quite well above.   In the big picture, the Feb. NSD has had little affect for teams like M for several years.  Most of the signings are either 5-stars who wanted to stretch out the process or late fills/reaches for new staffs or schools who found themselves with big holes in their rosters post-portal.

You may want to note for the future that there was a call this year to abolish the early signing day. The powers that be blame it for the flurry of mid-season firings and hirings - we will have to wait and see if anything changes on that one.

I don't mind criticism.  I've even acknowledged that my phrasing was poor.  I can see how it is being misunderstood.  I was never a good writer, I have a hard time expressing my thoughts in written form.  I've gotten better as I get older but I'm still lacking.  My sensitivity comes from personal attacks because I'm not as informed as some seem to think I should be.  That was why I asked, to be informed.

Don't pull the "you guys made me feel bad for asking" bit man. You got called out by quite a few posters, and it wasn't because you "weren't following recruiting" and wanted to know about things.

You were fine asking about if Conerly was still an option.

It's you going off about how terrible it was for UM on NSD and how bad Jim effed things up. For someone not following recruiting or knowing how to use the site, you sure were pretty confident in UM having holes in the class, and were confidently repeating some unsupported opinions about how the class fizzled out.

Literally the only misses yesterday were Andrew Paul and not retaining Kevontae Henry who we weren’t expected to keep. There were no other people of note. Love when people get mad when also not being educated
