NCAA: SO, your athletic director loaned his car to a player.

UM: yes, that's a major violation. We'll take a huge scholarship reduction and 5 year postseason ban.

NCAA: well we were thinking of not punishing you and that EMU could just take the bla-

UM: we are morally superior. Death penalty, and no scholarships for 10 years.

NCAA: no seriously you don't even need to be punished just-

UM: it's already done. Have a nice day.

What a fucking idiot. Driving and crashing Warde Manuel's car at 3am and then lying to the police. While the article says the officers didn't think he was drunk, I saw him and the whole team at Skeeps that night (after a loss may I add). He was 100% intoxicated. Honestly think Juwan's punishment was weak

EDIT: Go ahead and downvote me. You guys all claim you'll have some sort of moral backbone and logic if shit like this ever happened to Michigan, then when it actually does, you just make excuses like MSU and OSU fans. Be better. A 1 game punishment for what he did is a bad look

I don’t think that matters all that much. I’m assuming Simpson called Warde’s kid, who he has a personal relationship on some level, and asked if could borrow the car. That doesn’t tell me anything about Warde, other than that he is not able to get his kid to understand that he shouldn’t let people borrow his car at that hour, but it’s not shady or anything to me.

Much more concerned that the cops didn’t breathalyze him or anything like that and that Simpson, as the senior leader, did not have the realization that lying about who he was is worse than just telling the truth initially

The fact that you don't see a giant red flag with the fact that one of the best student-athletes in a major program, such as NCAA basketball at a major DIV 1 school, driving around in one of the university's most powerful man's car, at 3 o'clock at night, is honestly disturbing.

Even if he hadn't hit a pole, that fact alone is enough for me to have a ton of questions, and see a lot of red flags waving.

If this was MSU, OSU, pretty much anywhere but here, I'd hope that you'd see the giant red flag here, and see that there's obviously something more to it. But since it's at Michigan, the excuses start rolling in. It's honestly sickening, truly..... sigh. ...Hypocrites and their double standards. We need to hold ourselves and UM's athlete's accountable as well if we want this whole thing to work....

This seems like common sense to me. I’m never one of the moral high ground guys, but seeing the same people who talk shit about the morality of anybody on our schedule try to play mental gymnastics with the case is funny. “But it was really the AD son’s car!!!”, lol come on man. Most wouldn’t even try to rationalize the headline after seeing a player was driving the AD’s car at a rival school.

As someone who works in the auto insurance industry, I hope you don't live in Michigan. If you get into an accident and are injured, the injury will not be covered. All persons are required to carry auto insurance as named insureds on the vehicles they own in their household. If your going to take that chance, be extra cautious out there.

That's not true. As long as the owner of this vehicle is insuring it, in this case his parents, and he is on their auto insurance policy (or has his own policy elsewhere - but that's irrelavent in this case) as a driver, he is absolutely 100% covered.

Agreed if this is his parents owning the car and he and they are on the policy, however, he seems to be indicating that his mother is not on the policy and he is insuring it. If he's not in the household and in MI, he would be SOL for PIP per Barnes v. Farmers Insurance. Unless I'm misinterpreting what he is saying....which is always possible on a Friday.

He said he pays the car note and insurance, but not that they were in his name. I'm assuming what he meant is (could be dead wrong) that the car and insurance is under her name, but he does indeed pay it, its just cheaper in her name/ on her policy with him. But obviously the most important thing here is - who's name is the car in? and Who's the named insurer on the insurance policy that is covering said vehicle. I'm assuming OP knows this, or at least was steered in the right direction, but you never know.

However, as an insurance agent for Allstate for a couple years now, I can confirm that people are indeed very dumb. So who really knows, haha.

Also want to say that it would be a much better approach to explain the full circumstances publicly and then just state that the one game suspension was sufficient.  If he was driving his friend’s car and the police chose not to do a sobriety test that is their prerogative, the AD doesn’t have to speak for the PD about that.

All of this secretive business seems to reflect consciousness of guilt on some level about something involved in the matter and it makes me uncomfortable.  There is a distinct “Mateen Cleeves in car accident on 94” feel to this story that is a little off-putting to me.  At the risk of drawing some ire, I am of the opinion that based on my cumulative observation of Simpson’s disposition this season that his graduation is going to be well timed.  It is time for all parties to “take the next step in their endeavors.”

It does have a feeling that contrary to Canham's advice we are making a 1 day story a 2 day story.

Who cares if they were there after the game.  They're college students and had a tough luck loss.  I spent many a night at Skeeps after being dong punched by girls who weren't interested in me.  I'd rather that as opposed to celebrating a loss the Louisville way with strippers.

Before they said they didn’t suspect a substance / alcohol issue, they simply didn’t comment on it.  That as well as him initially denying being the driver and you seeing him intoxicated, I’m sure there is nothing to see here  ?

Dodge writes that Simpson was given a ticket for driving too fast for the current road conditions, but that police did not comment on whether any impaired driving occurred or if he took a breathalyzer test.

Simpson isn’t a fucking idiot for driving Wardes kids car. He’s a fucking idiot for not using Uber or Lyft from fucking Skeeps (if true) AND then lying about being the driver.

The police not testing his BAC is also WTF status. If we pride ourselves on doing the right thing, THEN DO THE FUCKING RIGHT THING.

1 game is far too little for this. I’m not going to play dumb and act like X had 1 beer at Skeeps (LOL) and was the DD for the night. Unless Sasha Obama was in the car with him and the Secret Service got him off the hook, this looks bad. Very bad.

How does it look bad ? He didn’t hurt anyone. If there is no victim I don’t see a reason to be upset. The right thing is to get your athletes out of trouble with the law unless they harmed another person. Such as rape, domestic violence, burglary  ect.
And sometimes cops just let drunk drivers go. I had a late night with a girl at Tios. I was planning to walk back and go to bed. Ends up her mom demands she come back home to Detroit on 6 mile. So I end up having to drive all the way there after about 8 shots of tequila. Cop pulled me over. I was sure it was over for me. Somehow he just gave me a speeding ticket (apparently I was going 30 over).
