Angelique Article About Manuel

Nice meaty piece about the Manuel hire by Angelique here:

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/201…

Gives a good sense of him as a person, which I'd found lacking in accounts to now. Sounds very likable, also like he's got the gravitas to make serious decisions when the time comes. (Translation: former roomate of Jim and on great terms with him, but not just here to play yes-man.) Also, his experience runs to both depth and success in guiding athletic departments.

“It’s the perfect storm, if you will. I think it’s going to push Michigan back to where I think we all expect us to be from a winning perspective and winning the correct way. You’re bringing someone home who has the right personality characteristics and knows the traditions and the ins and outs and worked there for many years.”

The more I read, the more I like the hire and Manuel was high on my own list to begin with - it really does seem like there is a concerted effort to finally get this right, the culture of the athletic department, and while that definitely started with Hackett and then Harbaugh, it seems like it can be solidified under someone like Manuel.

is not simply a homer; my post underscored this; and because Drew Sharp's usual piece of crap-hackery about the hire says that is IS. So people shouting get out of Jim's way are not doing any of us a service, especially considering what's gone down during the last week. Clearly, Jim is going to need someone with a brain AND balls to give him good advice.

means trusting the coaches to do the job they've been hired to do without micro-managing everything.   We all saw how well it worked out (NOT!) for Brady Hoke to have Brandon sitting in on meetings and gettng IN the way.

I do understand that the AD has a job to do and is ultimately responsible for everything his coaches and other subordinates do in the course of their jobs; micro-managing everything is nothing but counterproductive when it prevents those coaches from being able to make their own minute-to-minute and day-to-day decisions about the team they are responsible for.

Sounds like a home run hire. If Hackett and Harbaugh approve, then so do I. Only main concern is how much will he be distracted by playing Wilson Fisk on season 2 of Daredevil.

the quote in the article about how when they were all in college Manuel was making the 'right decisions when all the rest of us were making the wrong decisions' - everybody knows what that means and to do that at a young age speaks volumes about how he'll run the show as AD.

this has every mark of an outstanding hire.

this is a very good article. drew sharps is another hatchet job. what is wrong with that man?  basically harbaugh is a overbearing punk and manual is nothing but a puppet that better know his place.

harbaugh must have cut him out and this is how sharp gets back, what a loser.

after he starts his job. The best AD for me is the one who nobody talks about. It's an administrative gig. If you're a subject of discussion it's probably because something's not going right.

I made a mistake and also read Drew Sharp's whiny article about how Manuel will have to bow down to Harbaugh - link not provided for obvious reasons, and I also had to wash my eyes out. So refreshing that Angelique uses these things called "sources" and "facts" in her piece.

I started at UM in 1986 and could swear to having as a hallmate in South Quad that year. There were several guys who played big roles on the team in 1988 and 1989. I'm pretty sure he was expected to be one until injuries ended his playing career.
