Title pretty much says it all, former UM hockey player (and captain) Andrew Copp signed a 5 year deal with the Red Wings today.

Copp was drafted by the Jets and played 7 full years for them before being traded to the Rangers for their playoff run this past year. He has 202 pts in 483 games, and should slot in nicely as a 2nd/3rd line Center for the Wings.

Loved him in his short time with the Rangers. Disappointed/shocked to hear they didn't offer him a deal.

Enjoy him with Detroit. Great guy to start the ending phases of the rebuild with.

I'll take this as Stevie providing a subtle upgrade to the roster.  I doubt we'll see splash trades or signings, but little upgrades through the course of time as the draft picks mature.  Next time we blink, the Wings will be competitive...

awesome. this makes me happy. welcome home Copp.

now the wings have what ... two RW, three LW and about 10 centers on the roster?

trust in Stevie Y.

also, today the wings signed Olli Määttä (defenseman from la kings) to a 1 year $2.25 M deal. still have what ... $23 million in cap space?

almost done getting rid of the mess he inherited and getting cap space necessary to go from a .500 team to a cup contender.

I love this signing. He fills at center and is capable of playing both an offensive or defensive role. He can play on the PP and PK. What I love about him the most is his ability to win battles down low. He's great behind the net and in the corners. He's an all around player in the prime of his career and a great piece to add to the team. Keep spending that money Stevie!

I love this signing---it addresses a talent deficiency at the center position, one of the top needs of the Red Wings in their rebuild.

Easy now...   playoffs should be expected, but this team is still a couple years from being a cup contender.

I absolutely love the Yzerplan tho!    Its set up so if the team under achieves, short contracts can be dealt for more pics.     And the farm system is pretty loaded with high ceiling players.

Players to keep a eye on with development in the next two years are RW/LW/Berggren, D/Edvinsson, C/Veleno, D/Johansson, G/Cossa, D/Wallinder, C/RW/Niederbach, D/Sebrango, LW/Mazur, LW/RW/Soderblom, D/Buium, LW/Hanas, D/Tuomisto, C/Savage, and a few more in the system that could make it to the NHL in the coming years.

While the first 6 above a highly likely to be in the NHL within two years, if not a couple cracking the roster next year....    The rest all have a high ceiling.   I see the future as extremely bright for the Red Wings in the next 2 to 3 years.

And although Yzerman worked with Holland, Devellano made Yzerman who he is.
