Almost OT: The beginning of the end for Tressel?

Submitted by Hoken's Heroes on

Maybe you don't have an interest but I surely do. This can't get any more interesting as the wheels are starting to fall off the Tressel bandwagon...unless the great lug nut specailists at the NCAA do what they do best and keep those OSU wheels greased and continue rolling. My bet is that OSU will skate on this and get a light slap on the hand. The NCAA will never find their testicles when it comes to really big issues such as what we have seen at OSU and Auburn.

i can understand both sides of the argument,, but i do know that a lot of my friends are buckeye fans and some of them (not all) wanted us to get a les miles type of name to restore the program and the rivalry.  Some of them hope we are undefeated every year when we play them at the end of the season so it means more.  I personally want tOSU to be full strength, thats what makes the rivalry so strong because these arent two scrub teams, theyre two powerhouses  I have as well learned to separate the off the field cheating with the on field cheating like taping the other teams.  I do not believe that the tattoos gave them any special superhuman powers that make them better football players on the field.  Some people say they "beat us by cheating," but i dont think the toos had any aerodynamic ink aimed at avoiding tackles or enhancing speed.  These players will serve their suspension regardless and that will be their punishment whether they missed five games of last season or this season.  It does not matter to me but  I actually prefer that they got caught before this season b/c i believe we will be a better/more prepared team and being suspended five games of last season or this season would still mean these players played us at the end of the season either way.  Just my opinion. Go Blue!!!

I don't think that anybody believes that the tattoos gave them superhuman powers or anything, but it sure is easier to recruit to a program where stars know that they will be given special treatment.  Selfish people like Pryor are drawn to those kinds of places, because they think of themselves first and the team second.  Sadly (and especially at the college level), people like Pryor and Newton are such physical freaks that they are able to succeed despite the fact that they kind of suck as human beings.

Obviously, the tats gave nobody any powers.  But the atmosphere of wholesale, widespread cheating has helped TSIO beat Michigan since Tressel got there.  Tressel should have been fired for the Clarett revelations, but instead Clarett's life was threatened, and he had his "head asplode" moment that landed him in jail.

TSIO has a system where players are paid and given vehicles like Escalades to drive around on "loan."  They have women who put the "ho" in "hostess."  And they even have "tutors" who do the players' classwork for them.

TSIO has dominated Michigan under Tressel by cheating.  Period.

I'm hoping for a "Tiger Woods effect."  Once Woods endured all his problems and the public became abundantly clear of his indiscresions (and his penchant for playing the back nine - hey-ohhhhhhh), his invincibility vanished almost instantly.  We're left with a somewhat pathetic shell of the man everyone thought was unbeatable.  I hope the same sort of thing happens to the Vest and tsio.

W/out the text messages desiring to jam penis through mouth via the bum hole.
<br>If TSIO actually does the dumbest thing it can do here and try to keep him, I'm fine with it. Tressel's damaged himself permanently, and the school will keep the stain as long as he's around.
<br>The senator personae has already morphed into one of a dirty politician. Lack of respect from fans, media, and (soon) players will continue to chip away at his base. Losses will follow, negative recruiting will set in, and the shit will pile on top of itself.
<br>Even as a fan, I've gone from respect and near-fear (and enormous hatred) of the man, to detached disdain and ridicule (and enormous hatred). Can you respect a Liar? Who cares if he continues to win, he's a Liar, and that's what your program is.
<br>Tressel's totem is already falling, it can't be propped back up.

asshole when he was at the real OSU, and he's still an asshole at the fake OSU.

The Plain Dealer spoke to Gene Marsh, a former chair of the NCAA Infractions Committee (and the guy who helped Michigan win its practicegate case) and Marsh thinks that Tressel will survive.

<quote>

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Although history does not work in his favor, Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel may survive his NCAA violations -- precisely because he is Jim Tressel.

A former chairman of the NCAA Committee on Infractions told The Plain Dealer on Friday that Tressel's positive reputation could help him a great deal when Tressel finally appears before the Committee on Infractions, maybe sometime this summer.

"I think if you have a lifelong good record, that should weigh into how things turn out," said Gene Marsh, a 1978 Ohio State graduate who was member of the infractions committee for nine years, and its chairman from 2004 to 2006. "If it doesn't, then what is the use of living life right?"

--SNIP--

Marsh, who said he has attended one OSU football game in the last 25 years and has no personal relationship with Tressel, emphasized that precedent does matter. But he spelled out two reasons why Tressel could be viewed more favorably that other 10.1 violators: the nature of the violations he did not report; and the previously solid reputation he built.

Unlike some 10.1 violators, Tressel wasn't lying about or covering up his own act; he was hiding violations committed by his players, a distinction that Marsh said he would find to be important.

"While the violations are very serious, they are not the kind of violations that somebody makes a movie out of," said Marsh, who specializes in NCAA compliance issues with the Alabama law firm of Lightfoot, Franklin & White. "It's not some gigantic academic fraud, it's not some slush fund that a coach was using for paying players. Although they are serious ... I'd say after nine years on the infractions committee, they don't break the bank as far as severity."  </quote>

I'm really wondering what Tressel himself is going to do. Urban Meyer was a crazy workaholic until he ran into health problems and lost Tebow. Every rumor I've heard is that Tressel has no plans to be Paterno, so I wonder if he'll try to leave on his own terms now. Edit: By now I mean the end of the 2011 season.

The quote you mentioned has a good perspective WRT players violations instead of coaches. I think this is going to come down to nothing more than this being Tressel and OSU. And I think that will either work in your favor to a stupid degree, or mean serious problems in Columbus (so either probation and five scholarships lost or a show-cause and a bowl ban...ish).

he's here until 2014 unless there's something else that no one knows about.  Personally, I'd be stunned if there's another shoe waiting to drop; the compliance folks and counsel's office have to have gone through all of his emails, txts, etc to see if there's anything else, and I imagine they'd have tossed him out if there was.

If we win a national championship between now and then (hopefully not this year, because I do NOT want to see Pryor get an MNC or a Heisman at this point) Tress will retire earlier.

Pryor would have to be hands-down the best player in the history of college football to win the Heisman in six or seven games. He'd have to out-Denard Denard and probably out-Tebow Tim Tebow.

I don't have any idea where you guys stack up nationally next season, but assuming you can get through MSU, you should be handing an undefeated team back to Pryor and Tressel. I could probably coach 3/5 games and win by double digits.

Also, I would hate Pryor too. It's a stupid game to play for most things, but the "what would Woody do?" questions are pretty valid regarding Pryor.

But after Tressel hid the violations(for 8 months) he lied about not knowing about them in December and then lied about not forwarding the email.  Isn't that, you know, lying?

I must be missing something.

I work with quite a few OSU fans now and they're all ready to be done with Tressel.  They're not your prototypical bucknut but I was a little surprised by their reaction

Unless the severity of the NCAA penalties depend on whether he's still around.  Remember, this is the best coach they've had since Woody Hayes, and the guy who beats us every year.  As much as some of the press and blogosphere are calling for his head, most of the OSU faithful still back him.

Personally, I think USC-scale penalties are the worst-case-scenario for Tressel and OSU.  But given the depth of talent in Ohio, like in SoCal, this is really a 2-year punishment.
