Kenneth Grant is very big, which you probably already knew,

and he can play.

247 recently moved him up to a 4 Star:

....Grant looked like he got in better shape.... It also showed up in the shot put where he went from 50-feet to 57. ....he is playing both ways and actually looked good on offense....

We still think there is room to grow, develop and improve with Grant....

With that, Grant joins the four stars.

Wisconsin yes. OSU no. I think OSU has him lower on their DL list and would only take him if their other options don’t pan out. However they’re also the ones who have been telling Grant to wait to commit because he should see how Michigan is performing on the field and throwing questions of stability of Michigan’s coaching staff to Grant. So they want him enough that they also don’t want him to commit and not be an option in the future either

In almost any other year over the past decade this would have been a good negative recruiting tactic by OSU.

Given the uncertainty in their own house regarding their d coordinator, scheme, and recent performance, this may not be the best tactic.  At least for the time being, the Macdonald hire has given UM stability here and may work in our advantage.

That said, if I’ve learned anything over the past 20 years, Things always fall into place for OSU and we at UM can’t have nice things.

The Coombs being demoted thing, in my mind, seems like it could be a misstep made by a green head coach that may backfire greatly.

The optics make it appear as a panic move by an inexperienced head coach that not only threw an assistant coach completely under the bus, but also promoted a coach that also does not have any experience coordinating defenses.. after two games.

That's not very good leadership, and expresses to the rest of the coaches that if you make Ryan Day feel even a little discomfort, he will panic and potentially replace your role with someone else on staff. The ripple effect that can have on team and coaching morale and comradery will be something to monitor.

On top of that, Kenneth Grant's recruiter and what-would-be his position coach at OSU is a nearly 70-year-old Larry Johnson.  Let's talk about stability when the guy could retire at any time.

I would not be surprised at all to see a shake-up of the entire OSU defensive staff after this season and Johnson just ends up hanging it up.

I hit edit and it made a reply and I don't want to try again in case the defect repeats itself. I'd rather have a double post than a triple. Sorry if it offends you.

The deference is body type. Why does Jordan Whittley play nose and Chris Hinton tackle? They aren't interchangeable.

When you are 335 you more  suited for nose. It's a more specialized body type and since Smith and Whittley are soon to depart the chance of early playing time is greater than on a 4-3 team with 2 tackles.

He is "only" a high 3*** but the reports of this young man from the Ohio State camp were glowing. OSU, of course, are in on all the 5***** and high 4**** prospects so he is not committable to them at this time. This is where Michigan needs to make recruiting hay and coach these kids up to catch those high-flying guys.

I am not current on Indiana football but Merrillville has long been a good football school.

So you saw him play. I watched him when I was a little kid. I really was afraid of him. He seemed like a mad man. No one played like that, not even Ray Nitschke or Dick Butkus. Then after he retired he started doing flower commercials. I had to reassess some things.

If you want a good chuckle, watch the video highlights in the post. There is one instance where he rips the ball from the running back and starts rumbling towards the end zone. The only one that can stop him is a small quarterback who has the angle. Grant literally brushes him off like a fly on his shoulder and sends him flying.

My budding hope for the future will continue to grow as our rebuild of the DL matches up to what's been done with OL recruiting and coaching over the last few years. Trenches, baby. Trenches.
