Will Michigan land one?

You would think we would hit on about 50% of these 300-1000 rated three-star DTs. So yes, I believe we will hit on one, likely two.

Hey Magnus, you think there's any reason to be worried about Michigan losing out on Dillon Tatum?  Seems like he was a lock, but I saw that he just extended his commitment timeline following the staff turnover we just had.  Is MSU making a legitimate push, or is this nothing to see here?

I mean, I guess there's reason to worry. If he was 100% set on Michigan, I think he would have announced already (a.k.a. last month). But I do think it's prudent to get to know Clinkscale and see how things go a little bit. I have a feeling Clinkscale will be at Michigan for a couple years, at least.

I don't see how Tatum could turn down playing for his high school coach, Ron Bellamy. So I think Tatum will commit to Michigan.

The frustrating thing is that Michigan has always had a good shot to land big guys ranked in the three-star range. We just seemingly didn’t try under Don Brown. So yeah, I expect a couple of these guys will end up at Michigan

I'm just a guy who listens to the Michigan Insider recruiting podcast for my inside info, but here are some things I've gathered from that on defensive tackle recruiting.

Jordan Phillips 6-3 290 lbs., overall ranking 604 - Is basically a Michigan lock at this point.  Sam Webb thinks he's really underrated.  I personally wasn't blown away by his film, but he looks like he'd at least be a guy and not a liability.

Deone Walker 6-6 340 lbs., overall ranking 362 - Probably a 75% chance he ends up at Michigan, but still early in his recruitment.  He showed up at a camp this spring looking much lighter and quicker, so he's in line for a rankings boost, but that also might mean a lot more suitors come calling.

Walter Nolen 6-4 300 lbs., overall ranking 2 - Maybe a 20% chance Michigan lands him because he's from the south (Tennessee) and is so highly ranked.  But Michigan has a lot of people close to him in his corner, and so far have absolutely killed it with his recruitment.  Michigan's probably one of the leaders right now, but no one wants to get their hopes up too much as it seems like a race Alabama pulls out in the end.

Maybe it's best not to have someone on the team named Sir Mells. I can just see it now:

Harbaugh: Shaun, who’s that over there on the defensive line?

Nua: Sir

Harbaugh: I said, who’s that over there on the defensive line?

Nua: Sir, sir

Harbaugh: Why are you repeating sir to me. You only need to address me once. (Shakes his head) Screw it. I’ll ask him myself. Hey you. On the defensive line. What’s your name?

Sir: Me, sir?

Harbaugh: Yes you.

Sir: Sir

Harbaugh: I said, what’s your name?

Sir: Sir, sir

Harbaugh: Are you being a smartass?

Sir: No sir

Harbaugh: What is you damn name?

Sir: Sir

Harbaugh: Enough of this shit. Your gonna run laps until you can remember your name.

And he’s still running to this day...

While I understand the previous angst about our defensive line recruiting, unlike in 2018, when we brought in only 1 defensive lineman over 250 (Aiden Hutcinson at 260) and 2020 when we only brought in 1 over 240 (Braiden McGregor at 260), in 2021 we brought in 3 at 260 or above (Benny, Rooks and Iwunnah).   Further, all three of the 2021 recruits are rated as DTs, so presumably scouts think they have the capacity to add good weight.

The new defensive staff hasn’t just said they want bigger guys, they have already started to show it.
