Adrien Nunez planning on stay at Michigan for 2021 season

In a somewhat surprising development, Adrien Nunez’s mom told Brendan Quinn that Nunez is planning on staying at Michigan for next season

Rumblings have been that he really values a UM degree. A lot of people expected him to stay for that reason, this seems to confirm that.
March 26th, 2020 at 10:21 PM ^
If this is truly the case, what are people's assumptions now about who's leaving to make way for incoming recruits?
March 26th, 2020 at 10:25 PM ^
My guess all along is that Livers is going pro regardless of draft stock. This is based on no information.
If you think about it from the standpoint of, if he gets comes back and gets injured again his NBA chances become very slim, I can definitely see it.
Get the money you can when you can.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:03 AM ^
I don’t understand the Livers leaving for NBA talk. If he leaves now he is basically committing to the g league or overseas. He has so much to gain by coming back. Plus his smoking hot gf will be back at uofm next year as well.
March 26th, 2020 at 10:30 PM ^
Howard as a walk-in, Castleton transfer, Bajema transfer, DDJ/Johns transfer, Franz/Livers go pro, Brooks transfer.
Assuming Christopher commits, pick 2 of those. I've listed them in order of likelihood IMO, not that I know anything to make special.
March 26th, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
Hopefully you’re right about the order of likelihood
March 26th, 2020 at 11:10 PM ^
I got progressively more angry as I read your first sentence. Then I read your second :). I would think Howard being a walk-on for at least his first year has to be the case at this point.
Sooooo, was searching for a thread now a month and a half later after this and this depressingly ended up being: Howard on scholarship, Castleton transfer, Bajema transfer, DDJ transfer, Livers is TBD, and Christopher didn't commit.
Dong punches for all!
March 26th, 2020 at 10:34 PM ^
Eh boy
March 26th, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
As a fan I selfishly wish he’d find a new home where he can star, as a person I say good for him.
March 26th, 2020 at 11:09 PM ^
I know players can turn it around but Nunez shots are OFF OFF. Also at one point in the season he had 1 rebound in nearly 140 minutes of playing time so if he isnt scoring then he needs to do other things. I guess hopefully he can become a solid 3pt shooter by his senior season if he is staying
March 27th, 2020 at 12:12 AM ^
He's Just a Shooter who can't shoot
March 27th, 2020 at 10:52 AM ^
So he's me
His shot is off because he doesn't have the athleticism necessary to play D1 sports. He can't get it up quickly enough so it's always rushed.
March 26th, 2020 at 11:45 PM ^
There is no good argument for Nunez over Bajema.
Bajema played less than half the minutes of Nunez per game, and still managed to beat him in virtually every statistic. Shooting percentage being the big one.
Bajema : 76.9% on all FG, 57.1% on 3s
Nunez : 30.8% on all FG, 25.6% on 3s
You don’t turn away a guy that can shoot 40% from threes, even if their defense is sub par. And you certainly don’t do it in exchange for a guy that would be lucky to hit 30% next year. Especially when one guy is in year two and hasn’t improved.
March 27th, 2020 at 12:14 AM ^
The only thing I can think of is that Nunez plays well in practice and hits his shots, but it hasn't translated in game.
But at the same time, if he still hasn't can't hit his 3s in two years of ample opportunity, will he ever?
March 27th, 2020 at 12:19 AM ^
Basketball Joe Bolden
...if only Bolden were third string
March 27th, 2020 at 10:12 AM ^
Damn....you beat me to it! This is EXACTLY what I was going to say.
March 27th, 2020 at 12:44 AM ^
Perhaps he has an easier time getting his shot off in practice since X, Brooks and DDJ are all good to solid defensively but are 5 inches shorter. But still, doesn't explain it. His defense, shot creation, rebounding, and passing won't earn him playing time.
If this tells you anything, it's that Juwan isn't running off players to free up scholarships.
No one would dispute Bajema has the potential to contribute more than Nunez. Juwan isn't deciding who goes and who stays. The players are.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:00 AM ^
If true that’s a problem. The players are dictating the roster to coach ? Yikes.
March 27th, 2020 at 11:20 AM ^
If thats what you got from that, then yikes.
You just want to be upset about things.
The players are deciding whether or not to retain their guaranteed scholarships, yes.
Howard decided to bring Davis back for a 5th year. He decides which players to recruit and offer. He doesn't also get to force players to stay or go.
March 26th, 2020 at 11:52 PM ^
From UM hoops: Seems like if we get Christopher and Jace walks on, we would only need one other departure.
March 27th, 2020 at 12:15 AM ^
I think the most likely scenario in that situation would be Livers going to the NBA or Castleton leaving
March 27th, 2020 at 12:31 AM ^
Bajema looks like a future star. Nunez doesn't look like he will play again here. Bizarre.
March 27th, 2020 at 12:55 AM ^
Nunez might go down as John B’s worst recruit at Michigan. Can he be demoted to walk-on?
This is just not true. There have been worse misses.
The only guy I can think of that is as much of a miss since after his first couple of classes is Doyle. And that wasn't really his fault, because it seems most of his problems were medical, which isn't something the coach can figure out on his own.
Colton Christian. Carlton Brundidge . Vogrich. The tall white center who's name escapes me at the moment.
Edit : Blake McLimans.
I remember he also offered a guy from Detroit Cody who no one else wanted and that guy didn't even take the scholarship. Beilein pulled it after a couple of days.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:15 AM ^
My memory is a little fuzzy, but I'm almost positive that Colton Christian and Matt Vogrich were holdovers from Amaker.
Brundidge is a fair one. However, there is a big difference. Brundidge was actually ranked pretty high but turned out not to be that good or a good fit. Nunez was horribly low on the rankings...like below Caris Levert low. Beilein built a reputation as turning those types of recruits into something, but Nunez was especially low.
Your memory is fuzzy Vogrich and Christian were most certainly Beilein's guys.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:20 AM ^
Donnal was up there.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:23 AM ^
Donnal had his good games. They were rare, but he had them
March 27th, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
doyle contributed a lot his freshman year.
The book isn't completely closed on Nunez either. Prior to this season a lot of people would've said that Austin Davis was one of the worst misses and look what he has turned himself into.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:11 AM ^
Development trajectories are different for posts than guards. And while Davis turned himself into a useful backup against certain matchups, that's still a pretty limited role for a 4th year guy.
March 27th, 2020 at 11:51 AM ^
He didn't say worst miss, he said worst recruit and I totally agree. He is a negative presence every time he is on the floor.
Scholarships in the B1G are guaranteed for 4 years.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:16 AM ^
Colton Christian, Ben Cronin, McLimas(forget his first name)...Johnny B has had his fair share of misses. Nunez for all his shortcomings was starting at the beginning of the year.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:35 PM ^
i don't think you can count injuries like cronin, else you would have to count austin hatch which is silly.
Point was like any coach...he misses on some recruits
Yay for him!
My gut tells me that Livers and Wagner are both gone. The stage was set when this story was released yesterday. I know that it is a slow sports news cycle right now, but I also think this is setting us up so that fans are not shocked when it is officially announced that they have entered the draft.
March 27th, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
A draft evaluation is in no way a declaration of intent to leave!
March 27th, 2020 at 10:20 AM ^
The rules are completely different now. You can hire an agent and go through the entire process and still return to school. The only "declaring" that needs to happen is that the players need to request an evaluation from the NBA Undergraduate Advisory Committee.
What about the 2020 season?
Caveat: I'm not saying that Coach Howard would ever do this.
This story sure grew legs quickly. I don't know that Adrian Nunez' mother has any say over who retains a spot on the Michigan basketball roster. Someone stated that B1G basketball scholarships are 4-year guarantees. If so, he's entitled to stay. However, there are still ways of running off players if you need to open a scholarship. Again, I'm not in any way insinuating that Coach Howard would ever even consider that. But we're taking the word of the mother of a player who spoke before Coach Howard and staff have even had their post-season individual interviews with the players. The cart is way before the horse in this case.
That being said, I think that Nunez is the prototypical player who would thrive in Coach Beilein's system. He took these underrated guys (Stauskus, Dunc, MAAR, LeVert, etc) and turned them into stars. How many of them did it in their first or even second seasons? That's the true sign of a great coach, someone who can help a player maximize the talent he has. Nunez may have a breakout season next year. I remember watching his HS film and using it to teach my son a proper shooting form. His was pure. It's almost like he gets the yips once the clock starts running.
