5* MBB recruit Jalen Brunson's dad joining Temple as an assistant coach

Submitted by Ali G Bomaye on

I'm not sure we had much of a shot at Brunson anyway, but this certainly seems like a development that would reduce our chances, given that Temple was speculated to be leading his recruitment anyway.  But hey, at least schools aren't allowed to pay players, right?

You're acting like his father didn't play at Temple, and the guy was a asst coach with the Bobcats last year. A 1 and done won't really help Temple to much so I don't see this as a pitch just to get The younger Brunson

That's because that era was awesome.  It was awesome.

There are two ways to break or get around NCAA rules.  One includes "paying" players or offering jobs or housing or church donations to their parents.  This is against the rules, but outside of skewing the playing field in your advantage, no one gets hurt (in fact usually people benefit).

There there's the Saban/Miles habit of cutting bad players to make room for recruits.  This also skews the playing field, but this time at the expense of the athletes, not for their benefit.

Both are wrong, but in my opinion, one is far more wrong than the other.

... is nothing compared to where we are in college football and college basketball.  With the influence AAU programs have, the backpacks filled with cash, the fake classes, the handlers, etc...  I assume you don't watch college athletics anymore?

I used to hate on that team and the embarrassment to the program.  As I've gotten older, I've realized what is embarrassing is the people that control the system.  How are 18 year olds supposed to behave differently, when all the leaders in their sports behave far worse?  Are they blameless? No.  Free will, and all.  But, I direct my vitriol in a different direction now that I'm a little older and realize it's all rotten to the core, and the players are not the core.

"Not a pitch to get the younger Brunson."  Who told you that: Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy?

This isn't sour grapes on my part because I don't think one recruit makes or breaks the University of Michigan.  However, this is as obvious a case of buying a recruit as I have seen in a long time.  It has become SOP in the NCAA.

That's why players should all be allowed to take money from boosters, etc..  There might as well be a free market.  The players deserve the money and the ability to help their parents.

Reached by phone last week, Brunson declined to comment on the job but said “it’s always been a dream to work at Temple.” He expressed a desire to coach the Owls in 2006 after John Chaney’s retirement.

To be fair, of course (and in the hope that the OP is not implying that this is some random hire), Rick Brunson not only played nine seasons in the pros, but I believe he was also an assistant in Denver and Chicago as well as a director of operations at Virginia for a couple years, so he definitely comes into this with a nice enough resume, if you will.

derryck thornton who everyone believes michigan leads for has not been trending well on 247, almost everyone on there now is saying kentucky,  is there a reason for this or is it just because they offered and everyone assumes thats where he is going just because of the offer, getting kind of worried about losing another highly regarded target to that weasel calipari, any info on this kid would be great

I think with UK basketball, similar to Alabama football, if a guy you're recruiting is also being pursued heavily by them, assume the destination is "them" unless you have good information to the contrary.  But in times where there's mutual interest (like with that kid last year whose name escapes me and DeShawn Hand), smart money is on them.

they think Kentucky has them. This is probably even more true for scouts tied to Kentucky. It's the safe bet. For what it's worth, Sam Webb said yesterday that he still thinks Michigan leads. Sam seemed to be saying that it's really a matter of who jumps first between Thornton and Winston and Winston was back on campus Sunday. He said that after the Kentucky visit for Thornton.

One of the reasons he gave is that Thornton is a very quite young man and not someone who he feels is meant for the limelight of Kentucky. Sam seemed to think Derryck and his father know that.

While we are talking recruting here are a couple of tweets:
