Where did your "following recruiting for 25+ years" expertise have Kwitty Paye ranked?  I'm sure you had him at a 5 star level, right?  Because he was rated as a very low 3 star, who was drafted in the first round.

As far as his film vs AVS goes.  Graham is being ridiculously productive in the hardest level of California high schools.  AVS is playing against Michigan high school competition.  Nobody in their right mind will confuse Michigan high school football with the highest level of California high school football.

Clearly, Graham is a legitimately good player.

Weird, almost like when people were saying Michigan got in on some under the radar guys that were poised for big jumps once the recruiting services actually evaluated them were on to something.

Even more bizarre is how many of the lower ranked guys they missed on that moved as well.

Jahlil Florence is a top 70 prospect now for example

I also found it interesting that Justice Finkley was described by the 247 analysts essentially how U of M saw him, as they noted they dropped him due to his frame and his ranking being a little inflated by production and not potential

I don’t think it’s that bizarre really. Michigan is making a habit of things like this. This staff has deserved its fair share of criticism over the years, but talent evaluation of unheralded recruits has been an A+. Michigan has made a habit of uncovering guys before their recruitment has exploded. Sometimes the rankings eventually catch up, sometimes they stay ranked lower. They don’t always end up coming to Michigan either (Delp is a good example of that)

Michigan uncovers a kid like Kwity Paye when he’s ranked just inside the top 1000. Sites eventually give him a bit of recognition and bump him up to a top 500 recruit, and Michigan turns him into a 1st rounder.

You’d need to find a way to quantify what the expectations of a player are in relation to his ranking. And then account for the fact that there’s virtually no way for a recruit like Rashan Gary to surpass expectations while a player like Ronnie Bell, who was unknown as a recruit,  getting any production (let alone how much production he’s actually provided) would score astronomically.

I've assumed the past two years have really thrown recruiting services for a loop with limited access and guys missing whole seasons, so in particular fans should put their faith in the evaluations by staffs because those are going to be way more illustrative than a couple of camps here or there.

Good to see some vindication of the scouting by M coaches.  FWIW the unranked LB from Illinois M offered last week now is a 4-star to one site and has an OSU offer.

Note:  All these are 247's rankings - the composite on these fellows is still in the 400-500 range though I expect Rivals will be doing some significant re-ranking as well.  ESPN will remain the same........ because ESPN.

On a side note - 247 dropped Will Johnson to a 4-star at about #35overall  (He is still #16 overall and a 5* on the composite) -- I only know this as I check the "Ha Ha Michigan sucks" circle jerk over at tRCMB -- aka the MgoBlog Imploding thread -- on a semi-weekly basis.

It is really frustrating that our vast and comprehensive Blue-wall conspiracy misses a kid like Will while inflating the rankings of the others.  Does anyone have the secret phone number handy that I can call to get this fixed?   (They also are really slacking on the systematic downgrading of MSU commits and must not have realized that Damani Dent committed earlier this week.)  I hate to ask, but I am having issues reading the super-secret MGoMicrochip in my arm.

I don't live in state so maybe I subconsciously feel the need to subject myself to what my Michigander brethren get on a daily basis.

The RCMB has many similarities to here - forever pessimists, unhinged optimists, people willing to argue to the death over a small detail or opinion etc ----- but, it also "goes up to 11", has none of the (attempted) civility we aspire to, and really gives an outsider an overall feel of what it means be the perpetual "little brother" in terms of bitterness, envy, and even hatred.  Makes me feel like a bit of an amateur psychologist observing a behavioral experiment.

i did a search to see the full list and it pulled up 2021... my god... OSu had 6 of the top 11 overall... which means itll pay off for them in the next 1-2 years. we're going to have to play them toe to toe with lesser talent to start reeling in some of the bigger fish.

I then looked at the top ranked in 2022 in Michigan - and though we have #1, we seem to have been in on 4-5 others near the top and none are coming here. Just an observation on what I think is overall a pretty solid class in state.

I'd trade a loss @MSU and @PSU for a win vs. OSU. What would you offer up to the gods for an OSU win? Would you take a NW, Maryland and Indiana loss for wins against 2 of the other 3? What about losing all of our remaining games EXCEPT osu?

I want to win as many games as possible as that gives UM the best shot at winning a division and Big Ten title, and of reaching a Playoff or NY6 game.

I would not trade two losses just to beat OSU. If UM finishes 10-2 and beats OSU, they for sure finish lower in the standings and likely in the rankings than 11-1 with the only loss to OSU.

The other two scenarios are just silly.
