2020 QB Possibility

Submitted by jbibiza on October 31st, 2019 at 11:04 AM

With the loss of JD we need a QB in this class and so far the only name out there is a longshot with 5 crystal balls to OSU.
Apparently we had some interest in Carl Richardson and so far his only big offers are Boise and Washington State. Senior film for first 7 games looks pretty good and he threw for 2,272 yds with 26 TDs and only 2 INTs... plus 46 carries for 396 yards on the ground.
I have no idea about the level of competition. He has several Ivy League offers which is a good sign.

EvenYouBrutus wants us to go after Noah Kim.

Also, can't get on board with a QB named Carl.  Carl may be a fine name, but not for a Michigan QB.  His last name also doesn't start with M, which appears to be an issue going forward.  Doesn't pass the name test.

I may be in the minority here but I’m fine with not replacing him with another qb. Milton, Mccaffrey, McNamara and McCarthy should have us covered and they can take two qbs in 2021 if they need an insurance policy

Nope. If we've learned one thing from the debacle that was the Hoke era, it's that you always take a QB in your recruiting class.  Always.  With the transfer portal, we have no idea how many of the above in the QB corps are going to be here next spring.  Recruit a QB every season.

Sorry I just don’t think it’s definitely necessary. We are gonna scramble now and take whoever we can drum up, give them a scholarship for four years, and have them transfer to a MAC school three years from now? If Milton leaves pick up a grad transfer to get depth and get a second qb in 2021. There aren’t a ton of talented qbs uncommitted now that we are gonna have a shot at. If this was May I’d feel differently but it’s basically November. We will see but I think they’ll plug in a bound to be bench guy this late in the cycle.

A fourth QB isn't definitely necessary the same way that wearing a seatbelt isn't definitely necessary. Most of the time it will probably be fine, but when you need it, you really need it.

That's not even a good analogy, since a extra QB probably has some ancillary benefits for working on the scount team and helping the other QBs on the roster, beyond backup in case of need in game.

FWIW, I agree with you under the given conditions.  I'd rather skip the QB in one class than to pick up a "flyer" (2011, 2015) at QB who most likely won't see action on the field.

I'd suggest that it's better to target having a number of scholarship QB's on the roster (4?) than to have a hardline rule that you HAVE to take one every single year.  I'd be after quality more than quantity.

That being said, you really can't miss on your QB pick the following year.  One of the good things about JH is that he's been able to sell the Michigan QB position pretty well during his tenure and the cupboard is currently full.

Not every 3 Star outside the top25 QB recruits are relegated to bench warming duties. (Besides, I'd rather have a "bench warmer" in place and knows the system/plays able to step in should a starter go down. So has Indiana right now. Ramsey was also a low 3 Star and that has saved IU's season)
Quick check through a few rankings of current Top 20-25 QB's that will get hard looks from NFL has several that fit that criteria coming out of HS.
Looking at 2016/2017 alone: Jordan Love #70 (247 position), Justin Herbert #26, Nate Stanley #37, Desmond Ridder #116, Brock Purdy #36, Charlie Brewer #36

Ah yes... and because of the transfer climate due to the "portal" otherwise known as the "anal cavity penetration apparatus" we've created this self fulfilling prophecy whereby we onboard more QBs than will ever see the field even in the event there's a global killer. Thereby sucking up multiple scholarships, and further inspiring potential QBs to continue transferring.

So your solution, is to buy more QBs to further perpetuate attrition. This transfer portal thing is a fuckin' mess...

The fact of the matter is that the GOAT would have transferred out of Michigan if the portal was a "thing" back then. Fortunately he was inspired to change his attitude get off his ass, and start competing for the job.

The transfer portal is what makes this different than the Hoke era.  We are well stocked with the 3 QB's already on the team plus McCarthy coming in.  Even if any of them leave, we've already shown that we can use the transfer portal to bring in a QB.  Don't waste a scholarship just to bring in a QB unless the coaches think the kid could realistically start at some point.  If there is nobody like that available, use the portal down the road if we need one.

Problem is, the loser of the McCaffrey-Milton QB battle is a transfer candidate. Which would leave us with the winner and McNamara as the only two scholarship QBs on the roster. Going through a season with three scholarship QBs isn’t ideal. Going through a season with two, is insane.

You HAVE to get a QB in this class. Period. Full stop. There is no debating that.

Exactly.  If McCaffrey wins the job, Milton could be looking at waiting until his RS-Sr year before starting.  I'd be shocked if he didn't leave.

That leaves two scholarship QBs next year, one being a RS-Fr.  We need a QB commit, and I would be happy if we found a grad transfer as well.

They'll find a guy. Remember Kevin Doyle was a Michigan commit until he wasn't, and ended up at Arizona two seconds later. While it may be tough to find a top level replacement, I have faith in the staff to figure it out

I'd keep an eye on Jalen Suggs, he's a high 3* Dual Threat QB out of Minnesota that's crystal balled heavily to Gonzaga. For basketball. A Michigan offer to a great athlete may be enough to sway that, and don't discount going heavy for Harrison Bailey again after Tennessee hasn't done as well as hoped.

He'd certainly be an option. It looks like CJ Stroud is going to end up in Columbus, I know JD Johnson and current OSU commit Jack Miller are close, so if the Miller's don't like being the second banana, the relationship and trust is certainly there. This is a pretty solid year for QBs at the top, Bryce Young and DJ Uiagaleilei are legit studs, and there are a couple more really talented guys, but it's a weaker year in the middle. Lot of question marks, so I'm interested to see where Harbaugh turns. THey'll take someone for sure.
