2018 class thoughts

Submitted by reddogrjw on

with a lot of conversation, predictions, etc. in other threads, I thought I would bring it to one central thread

class size is looking to be 21-25

with a max 25 class in 2017 (plus 5 back dated to 2016), 25 looks to be the max

with expected departures mentioned here and TTB we could take 21 in the class and be at 88 on signing day (you can go 3 over) based on a majority of the 2017 RS Seniors not getting invited back - could always change of course

as far as positionally, my best guess is:

1 - QB (DTR or Shough - with DCaff and Peters might be hard to get DTR)

2 - RB - Christian Turner getting CB's

3 - RB - Tavion Thomas (who go to OSU who already have 2 RB commits?)

4 - WR - only 1 in this class with 5 last class - St. Brown, Babb, Dotson or Schwartz

5 - TE - Mallory

6 - TE - Jordan, Ruckert, Muhammed, Epps, others

7 - TE -

8 - G - Ekiyor

9 - T - Mayfield

10 - T - Ryan Hayes

11 - OL - Ghirmai, Dunlap or Faalele

12 - DT - Fryday

13 - DT - Togiai, Michael Thompson or someone

14 - SDE - Hutchinson

15 - DL - Hardy, Booker, or Perkins

16 - LB/S - Reese

17 - LB - Gant, Demens,

18 - DB - Sims

19 - DB - Simon

20 - DB - ITR

21 - DB - Faustin

spots 22-25 would depend on which other players leave to create these open slots

assume Drake Johnson does not get his 6th year to put us at 85

lose Shelton Johnson, Alex Malzone and Grant Perry = 82

2017 is the last year for O'Korn, Isaac, Poggi, Hill, Cole, Kugler, Hurst, McCray = gets us to 74

no 5th year for Ways, Harris, JBB, Marshall, Furbush, Wangler and Watson gets us to 67

class size of 21 puts us at 88 which is the max allowable at signing day

also, Mone could turn pro as well

I think Michigan will only take 1 RB. Very likely could be Christian Turner announcing this week.

Who is ITR?

I think they take 1 more LB with Gant as the top choice for the staff, but if he commits to OSU or ND, they could push for Asamoah.

Absolutely need two defensive tackles but I am not sure who is a great candidate among the current offers.

The coaching staff is making a huge mistake not taking Detroit kid Tyrone Sampson on the offensive line. He dominates every single camp he goes too. He's killed the last 2 weekends. His game film awesome.

Yes I know he plays center- the same as Ruiz....but he's just too good to ignore. Move him to guard if you have to. The coaches definitely move guys around. Look at Mason Cole for an complete. And what if Ruiz blows out a knee..who's the back up center?

Meh. A "mistake" would be something that hurts the team. Will Michigan be hurt by not offering/taking Sampson? I don't know. If they can get someone as good or better to play center down the road, then it's not a mistake. It's rare that there's a three-year player at center, so it's likely that Ruiz is at Michigan through at least 2020. Sampson will be in college from 2018-2022.

Also, Michigan recruits Detroit quite a bit, but East English Village isn't the most productive school when it comes to talent. I don't think it hurts from a recruiting perspective, because it's not like the staff is ignoring the city (DPJ, JKP, Ambry Thomas, Marvin Grant, etc.).

numerous spots over the last two years and there are just a couple spots that seem "thin": free safety and tight end. After Tyree, the FS talent is basically non existent. Brown's D would likely get even more aggressive if he had a premier ball hawk and rangy athlete as a safety valve. A talent like Malik Hooker would have been fantastic in Brown's scheme. Likewise, 1-2 TEs who block well and exploit the seams are needed after Bunting and TWJ. The 2018 class has a few of these guys that JH will hopefully land. Otherwise,
