2016 NFL Draft: Michigan Preview

Submitted by Tyrone Biggums on

CBSsports is doing a draft preview of 2015 FBS football teams up until the season kickoff. UM was yesterday, Sparty today. I think we could see 2-3 others potentially get drafted on this list if they have outstanding years, probably not likely but hopeful. Sad state of affairs that we have only avergaged 3 picks over the last 5 years for a total of 15. In contrast didn't every starter on the '97 team make it to the league? I know this trend will change because, Harbaugh!

Yep when Wayne Lyons is listed as our best potential draft pick this year... well that's sad.  They only had Bolden and Ross as the other 2 potential ones.  Again, sad.

Esp since the "epic" 2012 class was supposed to hit paydirt around now.

You need NFL talent to do well - there is a reason MSU and OSU are doing well.  Even in our 8-4, 9-3 years we had NFL talent, esp on OL/WR coming out yearly.

Next year should be better with Lewis, and Butt.  Henry and Peppers seem NFL bound down the road .  Maybe one of these OL guys has a surge under Drevno too (Magnuson, Kalis types) to get a late draft pick status.

I had convo with a couple of NFL scouts assigned to the Midwest region. They said that 2016 prospects for Michigan aren't very good. Wayne Lyons is likely the best and they have him at 5th round grade which says it all about Michigan. They believe that Michigan is a long way from contending for the B1G title. They're not at the level as OSU and MSU in terms of talent and depth.

I think that Ojemudia and Wilson could as well get drafted but they would have to have special years. Kerridge, maybe, but it depends on how Harbaugh uses him. I'd put Ruddock as a possible later round pick, but again truly needs to have a special year.

I expect our 2017 draft class to be decent. Kalis, Magnuson and Braden should all get solid draft grades if they take to actual coaching (and I believe they will). But yes, this 16 class is pretty dismal

I'm sorry but there is no one that can tell me Des Morgan CANT make it in the NFL. Now I'm not saying he's a 1st round talent or anything but 5th-7th Rd and can produce as a solid back up LB. He is just one of them players that just does shit right. He may not be the most athletic but he is definitely a SMART football player.

this years players who earn their way on the field can prove everyone wrong and can forge their own nfl draft destiny.... Who cares what some hooplehead at cbs says.

I dunno, I hope he gets drafted. Obviously that'd mean he had a great year. I just think last year a bunch of good college QBs didn't get drafted. Blake Sims, Taylor Kelly, Jake Waters, Hutson Mason, Connor Halliday, Anthony Boone, Rakeem Cato & Shane Carden all undrafted. If Rudock can play like any of those guys I think he will have exceeded expectations.

On Ross:

"..... he tends to get anxious and will abandon his gap responsibilities too quickly, biting on play fakes and misdirection. He is unsure of himself at times and doesn't always trust what he sees ....."

What?

Graham Glasgow will certainly be drafted next year. Ability to play center and guard has a lot of value, even has game and a lot of practice reps at tackle. He's a lot better player than people give him credit for, and if he Kalis and Magnuson can play consistently next to him, his abilities will stand out more on film.

He's very good, teams will have to believe in his versatility to draft him though - which could happen. Like recruiting kids that only play center are a little like kickers, everyone knows they need a good one but market value doesn't usually push them into the upper rounds. If teams know he can play guard too then yeah he can be a late round pick.

He'll have a full year of guard on film (last year), and this at center.  There won't be any uncertainty about his ability to play both.  Now to what level is the question, but again I think his performance is certainly enough to get drafted.

I don't want to bang on Miller now that he's left, because he was decent and filled his role last year.  But... as we know he lacked strength and this caused consistent problems with the OL last year.  In terms of draftability, I'd bet looking at the film last year Glasgow may get comments like "leaves his combo block too early" or "rounds out when pulling / slow to get to assignment when pulling".  Some of this would be due to assuming Miller has his guy, leaving, and then that guy makes the tackle as Miller gets pushed down.  And Miller getting plowed back into the backfield - which didn't happen all the time, but happened often enough that I think both guards subconciously stepped too far back (so they wouldn't get stepped on by a retreating Miller).  That's why I say a more consistent Kalis and Magnuson on his right and left would help his evaluation.  Even though I'm sure pro scouts are supposed to take those things into consideration, I'm not sure if they always do.

I'm also hoping Glasgow in the middle will be enough of a plus over Miller that couples with an improving line, that we actually see them as "good" this year.  At least in run blocking.  I think we'll still struggle in pass pro.

Yeah, when I mentioned believing in his versatility I meant his ability to play both WELL. Like you said teams will know he played guard, but does it look good enough to make him valuable in the 2 deep at both guard spots or center. If he looks NFL ready at center this year (which I'm assuming he will, expectations will be a top 4 center in the B1G) teams still may be weary of his pulling and hesitant to draft him too high without recent game film at G with a competent line. So I definitely agree with your points, I'm just not sure which NFL teams will have the wiggle room to take a plus center if they'd need a year or two to bring him up to speed on his guard play.

In regards to Miller, yeah no one is going to question his work ethic, some dudes just don't have it. He played hard and smart but you can't coach genetics.

I think our offensive line will be fine this year. I think they will be better in the run than we finished last year (and we finished well last year) and I think the majority of our pass sets will be quick enough that we won't need to be pass pro masters. When we do go with 5 or 7 step routes I think the defense will be so used to 3 step that we will be able to afford some what weaker pass pro...if that makes sense
