2009-2010 Year of Infinite Pain

Submitted by HHW on
In the wake of another dong punch loss to a rival in a sport in which we have generally excelled, I was remembering the good ol' days. Specifically, when was the last time one of the three major sports didn't make me want to dig out my eyes and sautee them. My pick would be 1998 - Basketball's last visit to the dance prior to entering the dark ages. - Jan 1st; Football wins the Rose Bowl and the 1997 National Championship. Even an 0-2 start in September '98 didn't make me look for the wok. - Hockey wins the national championship...their 9th. And as a bonus the Red Wings ring in the Summer with a second straight Stanley Cup. Has their been a better year than that? For Michigan or any other school out there?

that was just an awesome year for Michigan (and the Wings). It is really one of the first full years of Michigan i remember ( i was only 10 at the time) and it was a great year to remember. This was also the first year that i attend and paid attention to the Wings games. By the way, my fiancée bought me both the Wings team photo and Michigan front page article for a present, damn that was a nice Christmas.

I live in Chicago... so on top of the UM/MSU chaos and the OSU football domination over UM for 6 years... I have to hear about the Bulls owning the PIstons, the Lions 0-4 against the Bears, and the Wings in 9th place and getting pasted by the 1st place Hawks... and Illinois beating UM in football for 2 straight years... and UM losing in b-ball, at home, against N'Western. I am in hell.

Chicagoans rank third behind Buckeyes and Spartans as the absolute worst, most belligerent fans to have to put up with after losing to "their" teams. I didn't know how much they hate UM until I was tending a bar there when UM lost to BYU for BYU's National Championship. Everyone in the bar except me was cheering for BYU as though they were a local team. I am guessing they don't have much longer to brag. And it really pisses them off when you act like Michigan beating Illinois is about as important as Michigan beating a MAC team.

Don't worry, folks. I'm graduating this year. And in the seven years as an undergraduate + grad student here in Ann Arbor, we've accomplished amazing feats such as: - 1 NCAA basketball tourney - 1 TOTAL team national championship (field hockey!) - zero! Rose Bowls - two Frozen Fours The four-year hiatus between my undergraduate and graduate years were far more successful. So don't worry; things will improve once April 30th comes and goes. That's commencement, people.

The '98 hoops team didn't just make the tournament; it won the inaugural Big Ten Tourney, and was a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament. It's a tough call, but 1991-92 and 1992-93 were competitors with 1997-98. Both years featured the following: -Outright Big Ten championship in football -National-title game appearance in basketball -Frozen Four appearance in hockey 1991-92 also featured a Heisman in football, and 1992-93 had a Rose Bowl victory. I'd probably still give the nod to 1997-98 because of the two championships, though.
