RR is very investing walk-ons and giving them the opportunity to earn a scholarship having been one himself at WVU. This is a good thing for the program. What exactly however does it mean to be a "preferred" walk-on?

I think they are recruited and offered a spot on the team if they are willing to walk on rather than take a scholarship. On the other hand an ordinary walk on would have to try out for the team. This player would have to be more proactive; probably contacting the coaches to let them know their intention of playing football. Or a team may have an open tryout for the student body. I think UM had this last year.
