That is a significant loss.  He is supposed to be the best athlete on the team, and was learning the WR position after playing QB in HS.  Reports from people watching practice were that he unbelievably good, particularly at going up and catching the deep ball.   (Urban has a history of using the depth chart as a reward or to send a message.  Players are somtimes listed as starters out of Spring ball, simply to reward them for effort.  Others are listed deep to send them a message to work harder, and then move up when they do so.  Gibson was widely believed to be in the latter category, and was expected to get significant playing time this year.)

They basically are saying "Fuck the university" and backing Meyer for disagreeing with the school. This, of course, right after mocking UM for decommittments and losing Mitchell.

I wouldn't throw rocks.

  • Shelton is suspended for the year.
  • Walker is on the team, but has some challenges apparently.
  • Ahmir Mitchell transferred out, apparently due to some very poor decision making.
  • LTT was charged with 3 felonies last year.
  • Gibbons left under a cloud.
  • Lewan apparently made poor decisions.
  • Glasgow got in trouble drinking and ended up living with grandma.
  • Malzone and fake ID.

And those are only the situations I remember or know about. I'm sure there are plenty more. With a few exceptions in the above list, you learn from your mistakes. With those exceptions, you really need to be released from the program.

I love Michigan, and hate OSU, but I think it is ludicrous to suggest that in some way, Michigan players are morally "better" than OSU athletes.

you dont have to say any individuals are "better" than others to identify a difference in culture between two football programs.  Glasgow w/ grandma is a great example of nipping a potentially bigger problem in the bud and putting a student athelete in a position to succeed aka good leadership/culture.  UofM isn't without without error but I don't think we should be blind to any difference between schools and the players that ultimately represent those schools.

While I'm not sure some "booty shots" merit a university suspension, the mindset OSU and many other fanbases have (including our own) is that its always funny to see it happen to someone else. Always easy to take the moral high ground and look down your nose at others when its not happening to you. But when it happens to you, its unfair, its a conspiracy, or its taken out of context. But it happened. Tough shit. Move on.

The punishment may not fit the crime, but it'll teach the kid some common sense about not putting himself in bad situations. Let's be honest: he put himself in a bad situation by taking those pictures, because it causes everyone around you to start asking questions, and wondering "what else" might've happened that night.

I'm also guessing OSU has taken a look around the current college football landscape, with what happened at PSU, with what just happened to Baylor, what (allegedly) happened at Tennessee, and decided to get out in front of this quickly and forcefully. OSU is one of those programs that everyone is looking at and waiting for them to make another mistake. Especially with Meyer running the show. They don't want to give anyone any reason to think there's yet another problem at their school.

Methinks this is the bingo point!  What Gibson apparently did is in bad form, but seems to be usual enough for the youth of today with a cell phone.  She appears to have disagreed after the fact, making it a 'he said-she said' deal.  The person publicizing such a photo, with all else being equal, is going to lose that fight every time.  Does it need a year long suspension?  Probably not.  But with Baylor, is it going to get a year?  Every.  Single.  Time.

OSU got in front of it - with no uncertain terms.

Just because you have a cell phone that takes decent photos and has internet access, doesn't mean you can take a pic of whatever you want and post it to the entire world.  Maybe she was okay with the pic, but not the public posting?  If that were the case, he'd probably be looking at criminal charges.

I am surprised reading through these comments . A lot of you seem to think that the story of her blowing the whistle after he said he wouldnt date her is true .

That sounds like a bullshit story you would hear from a defendant in court .

None of us know the truth of this story .

He wont be playing football following a review from the school administration. End of story . No more need to speculate .

I just skimmed the presser, they asked 3 questions about the situation and received 3 answers:

Q: Coach, what can you say about the Torrence Gibson situation?

  • Urban: Yes, it was not from the athletic department or football, and I disagree with it.

Q: Urban, what can a coach do, or does a coach do if you disagree with a university-suspension of one of your players?

  • Urban: I don't know.

Q: Is this a unique situation for you or is this something during your tenure that you've dealt with at times?

  • Urban: It is not unique, we have dealt with it.

From Urban's demeanor, you can definitely tell that he doesn't want to talk about the situation in great detail, so he answers the questions as succinctly as possible.

For comparison, I guess

As noted elsewhere, this was an issue between him and a female student that might have spiraled out of control a bit.  Not sure the veracity, but given what we saw this summer I'm not surprised a school might respond aggressively to an issue between an athlete and a student.
